At Reepham Primary School our children aspire to be confident and ambitious learners who care for ourselves, others and our world.

We reach for the stars by:

Being responsible for our own learning Exploring ideas, asking questions and being creative Being brave enough to take on new challenges Working independently and knowing where to find help Embracing our mistakes and learning from them Knowing if it’s not our best, it’s not finished yet Supporting our classmates and helping them to learn Co-operating with others and being tolerant of their ideas Being respectful, listening and learning from others Including everyone in our school community, we all have different

strengths Keeping ourselves healthy and safe

We are proud of our achievements

Our School EnvironmentReepham Primary School is set in an attractive historic market town and was first opened in 1883. The school building has been extended over the years and now has 7 classrooms and a multi-purpose Drama Studio.

The school has a well-equipped computer suite, a class set of laptops and computers in every classroom. Thanks to our Friends committee, we now also have a class set of ipads. We have a well-stocked library, to which the children have daily access. At the back of the school is a playground and large sports field which is used throughout the day. Outside, we have a range of play equipment (mainly funded by the Friends), as well as a large sports field, a willow story circle, a willow Viking Ship and a wildlife garden. We aim to use our outside space throughout our lessons, as well as at break times.

Teaching and Learning- Our Curriculum4

Our aim is that all children will be inspired and challenged to achieve their full potential through a creative curriculum, which is relevant to and inclusive of our community.

We believe in a challenge-based curriculum, encouraging children to solve problems at the highest level they can. Active problem solving, independence and high level thinking are fostered in a range of subjects, to help our children develop into confident and resourceful learners. In addition to subject specific lessons (including Maths and English), we teach many subjects in a cross-curricular way, which allows for deeper learning and understanding of how everything links together. For example, when learning about the Ancient Egyptians, we could include Design and Technology by making a sarcophagus, we could incorporate computing by making an animation of Ancient Egyptians, we could plan for the children to act out scenes, which would fulfil the drama and English parts of the National Curriculum etc. Where needed, some subjects are also taught as separate subjects to ensure that the key skills are covered. In 2016-17, the whole school will develop their learning through the key themes of: Discovery (To Boldly Go…), Shakespeare (To Be Or Not To Be), Emergencies (S.O.S), Farming (Sew The Seed) and The Coastline (Splash).

Pupils with Special NeedsAll children have equal opportunities to access the full curriculum. It is our policy to identify special needs as early as possible in a child’s school career and to cater for these needs within the class group wherever possible. Physical/medical needs and behavioural needs are also monitored. If a child needs special intervention, an individual plan is drawn up by our SENDCo (Mrs Sage) in consultation with the class teacher and with parents. Advice is sought from external agencies when appropriate.

The SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) Policy is available from the school office and on our website.

Pupils with DisabilitiesReepham Primary School is committed to developing every child’s potential. We recognise that every child has different needs and we aim to ensure an appropriate education.

We welcome visits to the school from any prospective children and parents, and feel this is especially important for children with disabilities so that we can plan ahead to meet their needs.

All areas of the school are now accessible by wheelchair and all steps clearly marked for the visually impaired. Acoustic panelling has been installed in some classrooms so that background noise has been reduced for the hearing impaired. A priority in the accessibility plan remains echo reduction in the hall. All staff have received disability equality awareness training. A detailed Accessibility Plan and Disability Equality Scheme are available from the school office.

Homework

Children will have an increasing amount of homework as they progress through the school. In Key Stage 1, the homework will be daily reading, learning words and maths activities. As your child moves into Key Stage 2, alongside the maths and reading activities, the homework will include writing tasks and research work for other subjects.

We encourage all children to read regularly at home as this really supports children’s progress throughout their primary school years. The children will have Reading Records in Reception and Year 1 and Reading Journals from Year 2 – 6, where they can record the reading that they have done at home.

AssessmentWe assess the children in a variety of ways to ensure they are making the expected progress.

Ongoing AssessmentTeachers assess the children on a daily basis through questioning, discussions, working with small groups on a variety of tasks and through marking of children’s work. Teachers use the assessments to adapt what they are going to teach to the whole class, groups of children or individuals. Your child’s class teacher will be matching the work that is planned and taught to your child’s needs.

During the Reception year, the class teacher will be building up a portfolio of evidence called the Foundation Stage Profile. This is an assessment of what your child is able to do in six different areas of learning – Personal, Social and Emotional, Mathematical Development, Creative Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development, Communication Language and Literacy. This will be something that the class teacher will discuss with you at the beginning and end of your child’s Reception year.

End of Year AssessmentsAt the end of each year, the children will carry out a set of assessment tasks in reading, writing and maths. The purpose of these assessments is to give the class teachers and headteacher an end of year picture of what the children have learnt and areas where they will need more support.

6

Page 7: Welcome - Reepham Primary School€¦  · Web viewAt Reepham Primary School our children aspire to be confident and ambitious learners who care for ourselves, others and our world

In Year 1, the assessment tasks are in small groups or on a one to one basis. The children complete the national Phonics Assessment in June (this is taken again in Year 2 if children do not meet the required standard in Year 1).

In Year 2, the children will carry out their Key Stage 1 SATs. These are a set of standardised tests which every child in the country in Year 2 will be taking. These are carried out in the month of May. The tasks are marked by the class teacher and Key Stage Leader.

In Years 3, 4 and 5, the children will do assessment tasks in reading, writing and maths. These take the form of question papers which the children do on their own in the classroom with their class teacher. The tests are marked by the class teachers. In Year 6, the children carry out their Key Stage 2 SATs. These are in early May and are administered under test conditions. The tests are sent away to external markers and results sent back to the school at the beginning of July.

How we keep parents informedAs parents, it is important that you are kept informed about your child’s progress in school. We do this in a variety of ways:

Parents’ EveningsWe hold 2 parents’ evenings every year. The first parents’ evening is in October, where you will have a chance to discuss how your child has settled into their new class. The second parents’ evening is in February/March where you will have the opportunity to look through your child’s work and talk to the class teacher about how your child is progressing and areas they need to work on.

End of Year ReportsIn July, you will receive your child’s annual report. This is a written report which will give you a detailed account of your child’s progress over the year. In addition, for children from year 2 to year 6, you will also receive their end of year assessment scores.

In addition…You can make an appointment at any time throughout the year to discuss your child’s progress with their class teacher.

We also have regular ‘Open Afternoons’ throughout the year, when parents/carers are invited into school to view the children’s work.

Clubs, Sports and School TripsThere are a wide range of clubs available for children to join both at lunchtime and after school. Our Yr 6 Sports Leaders run lunchtime clubs throughout the year, and after-school sports clubs have included: Multi Skills, Lacrosse, Football, Tag Rugby, Cricket, Netball and Running this year. We have also competed

9

Page 10: Welcome - Reepham Primary School€¦  · Web viewAt Reepham Primary School our children aspire to be confident and ambitious learners who care for ourselves, others and our world

against other schools in: swimming, football. Tag-rugby, athletics, cricket, golf and tennis.

Every year the children in Year 5 and 6 join together on a joint residential to Malham in Yorkshire, or Hilltop in Norfolk. All classes have day trips designed to enhance their learning experience; in recent years these have included visits to the Tower of London, the Theatre Royal, the Castle Museum, Gressenhall Museum, How Hill, Harry Potter World, Sutton Hoo, West Stow, and even a boat trip from the North Norfolk Coast.

In addition to learning opportunities outside the classroom we also regularly plan learning weeks where special visitors are invited to school to teach the children. We have recently worked with authors, artists, musicians, scientists and mathematicians, an archaeologist and a National wheelchair basketball player.

Most clubs in school are free with the exception of Violin, Guitar and some sports clubs. Charges are made for the residential trips and a voluntary contribution requested for trips outside school during school time – if the cost of the trip is not covered by contributions it cannot go ahead.

On most days, the timing in school is as follows:

Please make sure your child arrives

promptly. Arriving late is disruptive for both the class and your child. In case of late arrival please report to the school office. When your child is ill please send a note or telephone the school between 8.30am and 9.30am. If we have not heard by this time, we will telephone home to make sure your child is safe.

AttendanceChildren need to be at school in order to learn effectively. Those who miss odd days or extended periods, simply fall behind and lose confidence. Schools are not allowed to authorise time away from school except in exceptional circumstances. If you do need to take your child out of school during term time for exceptional circumstances (such as a family funeral) please write to the Head of School.

Our school target for attendance is currently 97%. The Local Authority requires that any child whose attendance is below 90% is referred to the Attendance Officer

Admissions PolicyWe follow the local authority admissions guidelines. Parents are able to choose to send their child on a part time basis (mornings only, Monday to Friday) or full time basis until the term of their 5th birthday, at which point it must be full time. If you feel your child is not old enough to manage full time hours yet, please let us know.

It is the responsibility of the Local Authority to allocate places rather than the school itself. In the event of the school being oversubscribed places are allocated according to the following criteria in order of priority:

Children who have an Education Health and Care Plan naming Reepham Primary School

Children who reside within the designated area and have a sibling attending the school at the time of their admission.

Children who reside within the designated area and have no sibling connection.

Children who reside outside the designated area and have a sibling attending the school at the time of their admission.

Children who reside outside the designated area and have no sibling connection.

Within each category preference is given to children living nearer the school, measured as the crow flies rather than a road route.

In Key Stage 1 (Reception and Years 1 and 2) there is a statutory limit of 30 children per class. In Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6) the school can decide the class size. The staff and governing body are in agreement that this should also be 30 children.

There is one class per year group and the current number of pupils is 214.

Arrangements for Settling New Children into SchoolChildren about to enter Reception are invited into school with their parents lunchtime for different activities in the summer term before they begin school. This gives the children and parents a chance to become familiar with their surroundings. When children start school they are assigned a ‘buddy’ who is a Year 5 or 6 pupil. The buddies will keep an eye on their charges at break and lunchtime, help with play and make sure they soon get to know their way around.

At present the children in Reception can come straight into the outdoor classroom in the morning with their parents and carers, then as the year progresses they start to line up with the other classes on the playground at 8.50am, allowing them to develop their independence.

Older children joining the school are also assigned to one or two classmates to help them settle in and become part of the school quickly.

Child ProtectionReepham Primary School is committed to promoting the health and welfare of all pupils. We follow procedures laid down by the Norfolk Area Protection Committee if we see signs which suggest that one of our pupils may have been subject to abuse. Mrs Catherine Ogle is the senior designated teacher who will refer cases of suspected abuse to the Social Services. Mrs Rosie Dickens and Mrs Louise Forster are also designated teachers. There is also a designated governor for child protection.

13

The Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy is available from the school office and on the school website.

Health and Welfare Arrangements at SchoolThe class teacher has responsibility for the well-being of your child during the day. If he/she becomes ill then Miss Nerney/Mrs Stapleford will take charge and may need to contact you via an emergency telephone number. Please inform the school of this number and make sure we are told if it changes.

Medication can be administered at school by our office staff. You will need to fill out a detailed medication form before we are able to do this. In certain circumstances (e.g. a long term medical condition affecting a child’s education), medicines will be administered by other named staff following consultation with school staff, parents and the child’s GP and the completion of a care plan.

Parents of children who self-administer medication for asthma, should also contact the school office to complete an Asthma Care Plan. A copy of our ‘Administration of Medicines Policy’ is available for inspection in the school office.

If children wet or soil themselves at school we will help them clean themselves. We will make sure that the child knows the person who helps them and is happy for that person to help. All staff in school have been CRB or DBS checked. If any parent is unhappy for their child to be cleaned they should let the class teacher know. A copy of the Intimate Care Policy is available from the school office.

Height and weight checks of Reception and Year 6 children are carried out by the School Health Team, with the agreement of parents. In addition hearing and vision checks take place in the children’s Reception year.

Food at School

Reepham Primary School is a member of the Healthy Norfolk Schools Initiative. We encourage the children to eat healthily and do not sell crisps, sweets, chocolate or fizzy drinks at school. We ask that children do not bring such foods to school in their lunch boxes.

Each lunchtime a hot meal (cooked on the school premises) is available and all meals are served with vegetables or salad. The meals are provided by Edwards & Blake, who are committed to producing healthy meals using as much locally sourced produce as possible. All menus and a breakdown of ingredients will be listed on our website from September 2016.

Children are encouraged to bring water to school to drink during the day as this has been shown to help concentration. Water fountains are available for children to use at break time.

All children need to bring money for school dinners on a Monday in a marked envelope which is collected in their class. There is a main menu option (including a vegetarian choice) and a jacket potato meal option each day. The canteen also sells healthy cooked snacks and drinks at breaktime and children are able to bring in small amounts of money in a named wallet/purse to pay for these on the day.

Pupil Premium Funding

Children who are eligible for Pupil Premium funding include those whose parents are on lower incomes, those whose parents are in the forces, those who are adopted and those in LA foster care. If your child is eligible, you may receive additional support in resources and subsidies for school trips and uniform etc. Please ask for a form at the office if you think this may apply to you.

16

Our Yr6 children are trained as Sports Leaders, Librarians and Prefects to run activities for younger children.

Page 17: Welcome - Reepham Primary School€¦  · Web viewAt Reepham Primary School our children aspire to be confident and ambitious learners who care for ourselves, others and our world

Concerns & ComplaintsIf you have any concerns then we request that these are first raised with the class teacher. An appointment to see your child’s teacher can be made at the school office. Please do not try and discuss concerns at the beginning of the school day without making an appointment as teachers are preparing resources and plans for the day of teaching ahead.

If you feel the issue is unresolved after speaking with the class teacher, please make an appointment to see the Head of School.

Most complaints are resolved informally by the above procedures. However, if you are still unhappy then you should begin a formal complaint by writing to the Headteacher. A copy of the Complaints Procedure which clearly lays out the formal process can be obtained from the school office.

Bullying is not tolerated at Reepham Primary School and episodes of bullying are rare. If you are worried that your child is being bullied please raise this with the class teacher in the first instance. A copy of the Anti-Bullying Policy is available in the school office.

The Governing Body

The governing body is responsible for making sure the school provides a good quality education. Governors work with the head teacher to plan the school’s future direction and set school aims and policies. They are not expected to be involved in the day-to-day management of the school. Governors represent various groups who have an interest in the school and at present there are four parent governors.

The governing body‘s main tasks are to set the strategic direction, to support the work of the school as ‘critical friends’ and to hold the school to account for the standards and quality of education it achieves.

The governing body meets twice a term and holds additional meetings as required. Copies of the minutes are available from the school office and on the website.

Breakfast and After School ClubThe Reepham Rascals is registered with Ofsted and offers a Breakfast Club and After School Club. The club uses the school’s facilities and has strong links with the school.

The Breakfast Club is open from 7.45am each school day offering a healthy breakfast before school. The After School Club is currently open until 6pm Monday – Friday.

There is a wide range of activities for the children to choose from including creative arts and crafts, a wide range of toys and equipment and outdoor games.

Friends of Reepham Primary School The Friends of Reepham Primary School works closely with the staff and teachers at the school to help organise social events, fundraisers and activities. Any parent/carer who has a child in the school is automatically a member of the Friends and we work hard to ensure that we provide you with information regarding meetings, events and fundraising. We are run by a committee of people, who meet regularly to organise fundraising events, discuss purchases and organise new activities.

Our aim is to work closely with the school and teaching staff to ensure that money goes towards equipment and activities that enhance the learning experience of the children. We feel that the teaching staff (and children) are in the best position to tell us what they would like most for their school so we ensure that we listen to their views. We have recently purchased a class set of ipads, a sound system, sports kit for teams, stage panels, outside storage space for the Reception class, prizes for sporting events and class awards, and much more.

We hope that your children will benefit from, and enjoy the activities we organise and that together we can contribute to making their time at Reepham Primary as rewarding as possible.

So what do the Friends contribute to the school? In recent years we have…
