Greening Phoenix Road
Greening Phoenix Road provides a fantastic opportunity to improve and create green spaces along Phoenix Road in Somers Town and a green route linking Euston and St Pancras International Stations.
Since 2019, we have been working with the community to find out what you like about the area and what can be improved through this project.
The information the community has shared has helped to shape the project and the emerging plan you see today is the next step in the process to delivering improvements the entire community can enjoy.
We’re getting real with Greening Phoenix Road and we want you to be a
part of it!

Previous Engagement
Prior to publishing the emerging plan for the project, we undertook two separate rounds of consultation with the local community. Back in 2019, an engagement process was undertaken by Groundwork, in which nearly 700 people shared their aspirations for the area, which resulted in the establishment of five key themes for the design process, as shown opposite.
Then in 2021, a further process of engagement was undertaken where groups were brought together in virtual workshops to co-design ideas that will shape the future of Phoenix Road. This is all documented at https://phoenixroad.commonplace.is/.
What you told us
This concept design stage builds upon previous engagement and studies.
Groundwork’sEngagementReportbackin2019identifiedfivethemesforthedesignprocess.Basedontherecurringideas and feedback that came up during the latest round of engagement, the key ideas shared by participants were as follows:
PLACE SPECIFIC AND UNIQUE
SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL
SOCIABLE AND PLAYABLE SPACE
WELL CONNECTED AND INTEGRATED
Shaded areas for people to socialise
Trial no-traffic days, where roads are closed off to vehicles
Create a play street - hopscotch trail, pop-up playground, trampoline, zipline, climbing walls
Interactive and sensory spaces
Measures to address safety at junctions
Outdoor film screening
Reducing ‘rat-running’
FROM GREY TO GREEN a colourful and biodiverse public realm
Access maintained for locals, deliveries and emergency vehicles
Wild planting and urban meadows that support wildlife
Living walls
Local gardeners trained tomaintain the greening
‘Greening’ means more that flower pots - landscaping, street furniture, planting, measures to improve air quality etc
Trees and planters
Parklets
Public art created with local artists (walls, hoardings, pavements, arches or art installations in the street)
Allotments and spaces to grow edible plants
Fairy lighting in the trees
Dining tables to come together & share our different cultures/ foods
Pleasant seating to replace the existing uncomfortable benches
A wild character that suits Somers Town, not too manicured
New lighting and wayfinding and clear views so it is safe day and night
Wider pavements and protected areas for children
collages, models and artwork created during workshops with young people have informed the ermerging plan
Safe for people of all abilities to get round

Emerging Plan
https://phoenixroad.commonplace.is/
Proposals range from increased areas of pavement with biodiverse planting and seating, to
the closure of a short section of road to through traffic at Maria Fidelis school. The proposals, taken together will help reduce air pollution, whilst providing space for play, seating,
nature, growing food and cycling.
Safety is paramount, therefore, the proposals include lighting, wayfinding, well overlooked seating and clear
views. It is hoped that more people using the street for relaxation and socialising will also
improve safety.
To deliver on the five themes established and respond to the feedback we received from the community, space for vehicles, cyclists and
pedestrians needs to be re-balanced. In Autumn 2021 there will be a public
consultation on changes to the road network and parking.
Please look at the other boards for
more detail on what is proposed. We want your feedback!

CharacterandIdentity
https://phoenixroad.commonplace.is/
Somers Town has a rich and diverse culture; it is more ethnically and linguistically diverse than three quarters of London and there are more young people than the average. The first social housing in and around Somers Town dates over a century and in the 1930’s after slum clearance and re-build, the new environment was described as the ‘Garden City’ of Somers Town.
Somers Town has, over the years, attracted poets, anarchists, reformers, novelists, fashion designers and humanists. Amongst others, the area has associations with Pearly Kings and Queens and the artist Gilbert Bayes who created window reliefs, clocks and washing lines posts with finials, inspired by fairy tale themes. It is important that as the designs develop, this rich and interesting history is bought to life. This could be through arts and sculpture, imaginative play or creating outdoor seating and dining opportunities for different cultures to come together.
Throughout the engagement, there was a feeling that the area should retain a ‘less manicured’ character, and be naturalistic, colourful and biodiverse. The images here start to explore the character, types of components and uses shown in the emerging plan.

to complete the survey on our emerging design
Thank you for reviewing the emerging plan for Greening Phoenix Road.
There are still plenty of opportunities for you to have your say on these plans as we continue to design them up. We would love to hear from you now about whether you feel the proposals deliver on the five themes that were created as part of the engagement process in 2019, and your thoughts on the emerging plan overall.
In the first instance, you can:
- Complete our emerging plan survey on https://phoenixroad.commonplace.is/.
- You can also register for project updates by visiting https:// phoenixroad.commonplace.is/
- Email [email protected] if you have further questions about the project
- Call 020 7278 1514 if you require this information in a more accessible format.
The diagram below also gives you an idea of the next steps in this process, as more design work is done to deliver the Greening Phoenix Road project. The community will be involved throughout the process.
