• Water softeners shall have a maximum water consumption during regeneration of 5 gal per 1000 grains of hardness removed.

• Waste water from water softener regenera-tion shall not discharge to reclaimed water collection systems.

• Water softeners that regenerate in place shall have a rated salt efficiency of not less than 4,000 grains of total hardness ex-change per pound of salt; all other water softeners shall have a rated salt efficiency of not less than 3,500 grains of total hardness exchange per pound of salt.

In-Ground Irrigation Systems

• Landscaped areas less than or equal to 30,000 square feet shall be equipped with a rain sensor device.• Sprinklers shall:

• Use low precipitation, high distribution uniformity rotary nozzles.• Have nozzles with matched precipitation rates.• Have a separate master valve or a combination of a master valve and pressure regulator.• Have heads with internal check valves.• Pop-up to a height of not less than 4 inches if of the pop-up configuration.• Have flow sensors on installations of 30,000 sf or more of irrigated area.

• Landscaped areas greater than 30,000 square feet shall also comply with the following:• Shall be designed and installed by an accredited irrigation professional. • Water shall not be directed onto building exterior surfaces, foundations or exterior paved surfaces. • Systems shall not generate runoff.• Shall be WaterSense labeled.• Irrigation zones shall be based on plant water needs with plants of similar need grouped together. • Microirrigation zones shall be equipped with pressure regulators.• Drip irrigation systems shall be used to irrigate “shrub species.”• Sprinklers shall be prohibited on landscape areas less than 12 feet in any dimension.• Sprinklers shall only be installed in zones composed exclusively of sprinklers and shall be designed to achieve a lower quarter distribution uniformity of not less than 0.65.• Sprinklers shall be prohibited in areas with a 25% slope or greater.

• Standalone cisterns or connected systems are exempt from setback and yard requirements if they comply with the following:• Less than 4.5 feet tall.• Less than 4 feet wide.• System’s storage capacity is less than 600 gallons.

• Larger cisterns or systems may be permitted in required yards if they comply with the following:• Less than 10% coverage in any required yard or setback.• Located 2.5 feet or more from a side or rear lot line, or 15 feet from the front lot line.• If located in a front yard, materials and design must be integrated with the building design or screened.

• Cisterns may not impede requirements for lighting, open space, fire protec-tion or egress.

• Cisterns 5,000 gallons or less, supported directly on grade, with height to diameter ratio of not more than 2 to 1 are exempt from a building permit.

• Roof mounted cisterns may extend 10’ above the base height requirement.• Special review required for sites in or adjacent to critical areas.
