Greetings and Welcome Family!

The 2012 Burnett Family Reunion Committee/DC Chapter would like to first thank God for the strength and sustaining power he has granted us collectively and individually to carry out the awesome task of hosting the family reunion this year; secondly, we thank our ancestors for leaving us a rich legacy of fellowship, bond, love and commitment for without that framework none of this would be possible; thirdly, we thank the Baltimore and Hampton Committees whose vision and guidance made our efforts easier; and fourth, we thank all of you for your support and participation and love! The theme for this weekend is “Continuing the Legacy. We have planned what we hope will be a weekend of genuine FUN! FOOD! FAMILY! & FELLOWSHIP!

Burnett Family History

(A Synopsis)

The Burnett family history, as we know it, starts with George Burnett, who was born in Brunswick County, Virginia. While there was no birth record found for George Burnett, he was recorded in the 1850 census at age 12. We believe that he was a farmer.

George married Henrietta Johnson (daughter of Mary Johnson) on April 20, 1879, and Henrietta was 24 years old at this time. From this union, there were four sons: Fenton (who died as a small child), Ernest, Benjamin and Lee Northern Kenney and five daughters: Annie (who died as a small child), Willie Ann, Betty, Nannie and Minnie.

Henrietta died on September 1, 1896 from fever at the early age of 36. According to records, a young girl named Lillian reported the death. It is suspected that the name was improperly recorded and should have been Willie Ann because there is no record of a family member named Lillian.

After Henrietta’s death, George met Lula Powell Nash, a schoolteacher who came to teach at the Mt. Zion School in Brunswick County, Virginia. Lula had a daughter named Jessie from a previous union. After a short courtship, George married Lula, and from this union there were four sons: Thomas Jenkins, Seldon, James Powell and Smithey Louis and two daughters: Hattie Alease and Jeanette.

From the second generation came the third generation: Willie Ann (known as Sistah Ann) married Adolphus St. Rose, and they had four sons: Eldridge, Reginald, Thomas and George and two daughters: Dollie and Rosie. Betty (known as Bett) married Charlie Lambert, and they had six sons: Roy, Henry, Emery, James, Melvin and Ralph and four daughters: Mabel, Dorothy, Beulah and Alease. Nannie married Cleveland Coleman, and they had five sons: Ollie, Vanderbilt, Robert, Phenton and Purcell and five daughters: Vernice, Henrietta, Mary Esther, Edith and Helen. Minnie married Nathan Coleman, and they had four sons: Leslie, James, Leon and Clenton and four daughters: Jane Ray, Edna, Lucille and Mary. Ernest married Ophelia Seward, and they had five sons: Joseph, Mack, Gardner, George and John and six daughters: Lula, Virginia, Kate, Nell, Estelle and Ester Constance. We have no information regarding Benjamin and Lee Northern Kenney. Thomas Jenkins married Nancy Wynn, and they had one son: Rufus and three daughters: Julia, Cornelia and Gloria. James Powell married Minnie Jacobs, and while there were no children from this union, James Powell had a son named James. Jeanette married Charles James, and they had one son: Louis. Smithey Louis married Lucy Thomas, and they had two daughters: Roxey and Jacqueline. Hattie Alease married Booksie Hart, and while there were no children from this union, as the story is told, this was truly a storybook love affair. There is no information regarding Seldon

Where do you fit in the puzzle? If you have additional information, please share it. It is important that we know our history.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF PRAYER

Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic

last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was

rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and

spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man

who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student,

balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his

student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the

same spot every day (who really ought to get a job)! is a slave to addictions

that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through

the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this

moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week,

this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the

greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we

hold dear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us but to all

humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive. Bless us with

patience, empathy and love.

AMEN!

LOVE

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood. So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13

Still I Rise You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries. Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard 'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history's shame I rise Up from a past that's rooted in pain I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise.
