We need to counsel the anger before our clients add the “d” in danger.
What is Anger?
An emotion characterized by antagonism toward someone or something you feel

Causes of Anger in YouthThere are several reasons why a
young person may be angry. Here are just a few:

Causes of Anger in Youth
• Single Parent home• “Too Strict” parents• Hovering or Helicopter
parents• Learning disabilities or SPED• Moody temperaments• Low or inflated self-esteem• Burnt-Out from
overactivity/ not enough activity
• Not enough sleep

Examples and IncidentsWashington, D.C.
• February 25, 2012: 19 year old shot and killed while distributing Papa John’s flyers in Northeast
• February 26, 2012: 14 year old stabbed at Metro Center-DC
• Summer 2010: 18 year old shot in parking lot of Raymond Elementary School -Northwest during Summer job program (stemmed from fistfight)
• 2010: Mass Shooting in Southeast, over 8 days, killing 5 youth and a dozen others injured (stemmed over the whereabouts of a cheap, fake diamond bracelet)
Maryland• February 2012: 16 year old
charged as an adult for making deadly threats against a 7th Circuit Court Judge
• February 2012: 2 teens killed in 4 days in Prince George’s County– 1st case: Student gunned at New
Carrollton Metro Station– 2nd case: Teen shot on front porch– Both students attended Parkdale High
School

Now What?- Solutions• As Counselors, we need to
have a plan before the action.• Here are a list of strategies
and ideas.• Some you may know and
have tried and then there are some that you can add to your toolkit.
• Don’t keep these strategies and ideas to yourself! Pass it on to the teachers in your school or your parents.

Strategies and Ideas for your Toolkit
• Create a Safe space: No sharp objects on your desk (i.e. pencils, pens, letter openers, scissors) but soft objects (stress ball, stuffed animals, Tickle-Me Elmo)
• Music (Classical/Slow Jazz/nature sounds) –during sessions or classroom assignments
• Journaling (with or without music)• More Classroom Guidance on
monthly theme topics: Character education, Bullying etc.

• Using Board Games and Play-doh instead or electronic or computer games (critical thinking, problem solving and creativity)
• Bibliotherapy – use books to discuss tough topics or teach social lessons (Wings by Christopher Myers teaching on the topic of Bullying or The Berenstain Bears and the Golden Rule teaching on the topic of being kinds to others)

• Morning Meetings -discuss safety, conflict resolution or another topic)
• Question, Comments or Concern boxes
• Consistency in School and Classroom Behavior Management Plan: Make your Yea, Yea and your Nay, Nay!

• Daily or Weekly Behavior Reports (www.educationworld.com)
• Motivational Anger: Use the anger in a motivational way to create change in your school or in their classroom
• Extracurricular or After School Activities
• Non-traditional incentives: Pickle program, money system, popcorn day
• Write counseling half-year and end of the year report
