Classroom rules and guidelines
1. RespectYou need to respect yourself
You need to respect your classmates

It’s your job to make sure you are an active student.
If these rules are difficult for you to follow, I will…

Grading
You will be graded on a straight percentage scale.
Tests and quizzes are worth the same percentage as homework.
You start with 75 participation points.How can you lose these?
• Talking, being disruptive, not participating, and by creating discipline problems.
There will be many quizzes and tests along with different in-class and out-of-class assignments.
Hall passes
You get three passes for the quarter.
You can use these for the restroom, to get a drink, or to go to your locker.

Did research with mentally ill patients and discovered that a person’s personality is made up of 3 parts.
Id – instinct
Ego – reason
Superego – conscience
ExampleZak was walking down the street and realized that he was hungry. The only problem is that he didn’t have any money. While walking down the sidewalk Zak passes a sidewalk café with a table full of food. He could have stolen a piece of food off the table but decided to walk home and eat there instead.
According to Freud, what told Zak that he was hungry?Freud would blame what part of personality on finding food?And what told Zak to wait until he got home to eat?

Theorized that everyone has a basic drive to achieve his or her fullest potential known as Self-actualization.

What are some personal values that you have to help you make a decision?
Abnormal Behavior
Write a brief description of a behavior that they consider abnormal.
Be prepared to share.
Linda- for the last 6 months she has had an increasing concern over germs. She washes her hands a minimum of 100 times a day, scrubs doorknobs in her house, and insists that her knives, forks, and spoons be boiled before she uses them.
Jose- an avid skateboarder, since his parents got divorced he has increased his incidence of dangerous skateboarding. He dodges cars and trucks across 4 lane highways near school.
Pat- 5 foot 6 inches tall, weighs 97 pounds, and for the past 3 months has been on a strict diet of cottage cheese, lettuce, and water. She still considers herself heavy and wants to lose 5 more pounds.
Arthur- enjoys collecting pictures and descriptions of past wars. Outside of school he spends his time organizing his collection. He has no time for friends or social activities.
What is considered “Normal” differs from society to society.
Mental disorder
An illness that affects the mind and prevents a person from being productive, adjusting to life situations, or getting along with others.
Causes of mental disorders
1. Physical causes = organic disorderDementia – an irreversible loss of brain function.
Tumor, prolonged drug or alcohol abuse
2. Functional causes= the cause is not understood. They can’t be traced to physical causes.

Depression
Everyone experiences a level of depression sometime during their life.It is normal to be sad about a loss or a failure, for a while.If the feelings of hopelessness and depression have taken over someone’s life and they can’t deal with it and get over it, then they may need some help.
Clinical Depression
A mental disorder that happens when a person is overwhelmed by sad feelings for months and stops being able to carry out everyday activities.
Can be caused by stressors or can be a symptom of another disease.
Depression can run in families.
Signs of Clinical DepressionSad and hopeless and has at least four of the following every day for at least two weeks.
Change in appetiteChange in sleep patternsChange in activity levelLoss of interest or pleasure in usual activitiesLoss of energy, feeling tired all the timeFeelings of worthlessnessDifficulty thinking or concentratingRecurrent thoughts of death and suicide
Anyone who shows signs of clinical depression should seek help from a parent, teacher, guidance counselor, physician, or mental-health professional.
With help symptoms of clinical depression can be eased and be more managable.
Manic-Depressive Disorder
People who’s mood is always changing, and for no reason.
Their moods can change from one extreme to another in a matter of hours or minutes.
Myths and Facts about SuicideMyth: People who talk about suicide seldom attempt suicide.
Fact: Suicide victims often talk about suicide before they actually attempt it.
Myth: If you dare a suicidal person to go ahead and do it, the person is not likely to attempt suicide.
Fact: Daring a suicidal person to attempt suicide may only convince the person that nobody cares and may strengthen the person’s resolve to commit suicide.
Myth: Suicidal people are always tired, sad, and inactive.
Fact: Some suicidal persons, teenagers in particular, may become overly active and aggressive before attempting suicide.
Myth: If people try to take their own lives and do not succeed, they usually will not try to do it again.
Fact: Suicide victims often have a history of several suicide attempts.Myth: If a suicidal person confides in you and makes you promise not to tell anyone of his or her plans to commit suicide, it is important to keep the secret, no matter what.
Fact: By sharing the secret with a parent, teacher, or other responsible adult, you may save the person’s life.
Myth: If a depressed, suicidal person suddenly seems better, you do not need to worry.
Fact: A suicidal person’s sudden shift in mood from depressed to happy may indicate that he or she has resolved to commit suicide and needs help.
Myth: Suicide attempts should be kept secret because the information could ruin a suicidal person’s future.
Fact: The suicidal person may have no future unless the person seeks professional help.
To recognize, look for similar symptoms as depression.
Withdrawal from usual activities, loss of energy, change in sleep patterns, and other deviations from normal behavior.Large changes in personality.Anyone suffering from a major depression.Person’s actions
• If they have attempted before, if they stop doing things that they really enjoy, or if they start giving away personal favorite items.
• Decline in school performance• Increase in drug use.• Increase in dangerous behaviors.
Things they may say“I don’t want to live anymore,” or “They’ll be sorry when I’m gone.”Suffered a major trauma.A change in mood.If the person is usually always sad and then they’re really happy, or vise versa.
Cultural reasons for suicide
Can you think of any reasons why someone your age may think that suicide is an answer?
Family factors such as divorce, mobility, and working parents; financial pressures; future uncertainties, especially about work prospects; and the abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
Helping yourself
Know that no matter how bad things are, suicide should never be a solution.
Talk about your problems to a counselor or a trusted adult.
No matter how alone you may feel, you don’t need to deal with your problems alone.
There are crisis centers and suicide-prevention hotlines to get help and to talk to someone.
Helping othersShow that you care for the person.Make sure the person gets professional help immediately.Report any suicide pacts that you hear about.If someone tells you that they are going to commit suicide, tell someone. Break that promise, they’ll thank you later for it.Listen to them, get help, you could save their life.
