For Primary Schools

First introduced in 2008 to the then-P5 students.

Refinement to the streaming process (Merged/ EM3 streams)

Aims to help each child realise his potential, based on the child’s needs and strengths

Instead of being put into the Merged/ EM3 streams, your child can now offer a combination of standard and foundation subjects

Every child is unique, and has different aptitudes, capabilities and talents.

• Provide balanced education that caters to the different abilities of each child.

• Help each child realise his potential, based on his strengths and needs.

Greater flexibility• option of a combination of standard

and foundation subjects, based on their strengths.

Allow your child to focus on and stretch potential in the subjects that he/ she is strong in while building up the fundamentals in the subjects that your child needs more support in.

E.g. If your child excels in English, Mother Tongue and Mathematics, but needs more support in Science, he/ she may choose to take the first three subjects at the standard and the other at the foundation.

Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE)

In 2021 onwards, the aggregate PSLE T-Score will be replaced by wider scoring bands.

New PSLE scoring focuses on student’s own learning instead of trying to outdo others.

Students will continue to be assigned to Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) courses.

Offering subjects at the foundation level is not a disadvantage, as he/ she will be able to focus and build on areas of strengths while working on the foundation of the weaker subjects.

How does the school decide which subject combination to offer a child?

Feedback is sought from all subject teachers before theForm Teacher makes a recommendation, taking into accountyour child’s aptitudes and abilities. Following which, theYear Head and Schools Leaders would endorse therecommended subject combination.

Is the selection criteria for the various different subjectcombinations standard across all schools?

Yes, the selection criteria is similar across all primaryschools.

Will my child be disadvantaged if he/ she offers Foundation subject(s)?

Offering subjects at the foundation level is not a disadvantage toyour child.Your child will be able to focus on building up strong fundamentals inthese subjects and better prepare him for progression to secondaryschool.If your child excels in the subject(s), he/ she will have theopportunity to pursue higher-level options in the secondary school.

How can my child qualify for Higher Mother Tongue in P5?

Your child must achieve at least 80% for MTL and theother 3 subjects. Qualification is also based on teacher’srecommendation.

Can I choose to change the subject combination after SA1 inP5?

No. Any changes can only be made on the school’srecommendation at the end of P5 year, but not after SA1.

One semester is too short a time to determine if the child can orcannot manage a particular subject combination. Parents willbe engaged in conversations to ensure that the child is taking acombination best suited for him/ her.

Does it mean that my child would not be able to progressto the Express stream if he/ she offers one or morefoundation subjects?

No. Progression to secondary school and the variousstreams is dependent on the child’s PSLE Score not thesubject combination the student offers.

Are all schools required to offer all permutations of subjectcombinations? Why is BGPS’s list of combinations differentfrom another primary schools?

Schools may exercise some flexibility in the subjectcombinations offered, according to the needs of the studentsand the constraints of the school.It may not be viable to offer all permutations of the subjectcombinations, as demand for them may vary.
