CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT & PROCEDURES continued

• Binder – The 3 ring binder contains homework,

completed work, running assignments, communication from school, etc. It should go between home and school each day.

• Planner – kept inside the binder

-Assignments are written in by students at

the end of each day.

-Unless there is an issue, an everyday signature on the planner is not required. You may continue this routine if you feel it is effective for your child.

-Reading log – in the planner; is checked on Friday.

-Planner management is the responsibility of the student, not the parent

Writing• Integrated in all curriculum areas• Writing Workshop – focused lessons with student driven

topics– Lucy Caulkins Units of Study – Narrative, Informational, Opinion– The writing process: pre-write, draft, revise, edit, publish– Grammar: editing skills, capitalization, punctuation, spelling,

usage, etc…– Vocabulary: Strategies to learn and remember words– Conferring: on-going check-ins, individualized goal setting– Mentor Texts – students try out different ways of writing

Reading• Read Aloud -> Shared Reading -> Guided Reading -> I.R.

– Gradual release of responsibility, from teacher directed to student centered activities

– Making Meaning – skills and strategies introduced through read-alouds, then students practice in their choice of good fit books

• Good Fit Books– Students exercise choice while considering… Why am I reading

this? Does it interest me? Do I understand it? Do I know most of the words?

• The Genre Wheel and Independent Reading– This year, students will choose and explore a variety of genres

and respond to them in different ways through written book projects and oral presentations.

PARENT/SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

– PROMOTION & PICNIC DAY will be similar to last year. The two events will occur on one day. Promotion will be in the morning, followed by Picnic Day. Promotion will be an event allowing students to say “good-bye and thank you” to parents and their school. Picnic Day will be a fun-filled afternoon where they can spend time with their classmates for the last time! Informal picnic day attire is encouraged for the Promotion Celebration in the morning.

– Please do not schedule vacations for the days following the last day of school until after we are past possible snow days.
