We are experiencing a time in our lives where ‘little things can wear you down’.

Context: God raised up Elijah as a Prophet at a very critical time in Israel’s history. Jezebel, an idolatrous queen/priestess of Baal, had lead Ahab and the kingdom of Israel [God’s chosen people] into Baal worship.

Elijah made his prophetic statement to Ahab and then went to hide at the brook Cherith. Ravens delivered him with bread and flesh twice a day.

Then the brook dried up! Elijah got new marching orders. Elijah went to Zarephath and dwelt with a widow (he lived in a loft above her house);

God miraculously provided daily bread: enough meal and oil to sustain them during the famine.

We pick up the account, from where we were in the last sermon in 1 Kings 17: 지난 주에 본 마지막 구절인 열왕기상 1장 17절 부터 보겠습니다.

How much meal was there, initially in the barrel? 8

1 Kings 17:12 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

- Did the amount of meal in the barrel ‘increase’ to more than a handful? Obviously, we don’t know for sure.

But, we know that it ‘Wasted not’: H3615 ָּכָלה kâlâh kaw-law'’A primitive root; to end, whether intransitively (to cease, be finished, perish) or transitively (to complete, prepare, consume): - accomplish, cease, consume (away), determine, destroy (utterly), be (when . . . were) done, (be an) end (of), expire, (cause to) fail, faint, finish, fulfil, X fully, X have, leave (off), long, bring to pass, wholly reap, make clean riddance, spend, quite take away, waste. Total KJV occurrences: 207

The meal [I am guessing that his was cornmeal (just Because I like corn bread)] did not end. The meal did not cease. The meal did not perish.

Ladies: What would this make you think? [God is faithful every day. Amen]



God had miraculously provided for Elijah, the widow, and her son. 하나님께서는 엘리야와 과부와 그녀의 아들에게 양식을 기적적으로 공급해 주셨습니다.

God was hiding Elijah north of Israeli territory, in Zarephath [a place of refinement]. 하나님께서는 엘리야를 이스라엘 영토의 북쪽에 있는 9

o Who would ever look for Elijah there? 누가 거기에서 엘리야를 찾은 적이 있었습니까?

And it came to pass. That is a good phrase in English to memorize. 이 일들 후에. 외우기 참 좋은 영어 구절입니다.

It ‘came to pass’. 그것들이 있은 후에

Yet we are talking about death here. 여기 죽음에 대한 대화가 이루어지고 있습니다.

A widow’s only son has just died. 과부의 하나 뿐이 아들이 방금 죽었습니다.

Her future ‘live coal has went out’. 그녀의 미래 “불이 꺼지고 말았습니다.”

Her future family line has just been ‘snuffed out’. 그녀의 가계가 끊기고 말았습니다.

Her future chance of having an income, or a living comfortably in her golden years is now gone. 그녀가 소득을 얻고 편하게 살 기회는 이제 사라졌습니다.

In essence; her future is over. 한 마디로 그녀의 미래는 끝나고 말았습니다.

This was devastating. 망연자실한 상태가 되었습니다.

18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? 12

Yet, all men sin. 모든 사람을 죄를 짓습니다.

- Her son is now dead. 그녀의 아들은 이제 죽었습니다.

o She is obviously very distraught. 그녀는 분명히 미칠 것 같은 상황에 있습니다.

▪ Perhaps, She is ‘taking it out’ on God’s Man. 그녀는 하나님의 사람에게 탓을 돌리고 있는 것 같습니다.

▪ Be careful what you say to God’s man. 하나님의 사람에게 말할 때 조심하십시오.

• He watches for your soul. 그는 당신의 혼은 돌보는 사람입니다.

We do not know what the woman’s sin was. 여인의 죄가 무엇이었는지 우리는 모릅니다.

She is calling some sin to remembrance - that she did in the past. 14

We all have a past.

The Senior Pastor, the Deacons, this missionary, our wives, everyone here at IIBC … we all have a sinful past.

Be careful lifting up others ‘too high’ in your mind. Be respectful, but don’t overdo [ over님 ] it. They have a

past. They also have a ‘flesh’,

o They are sinners as well.

▪ Everyone who is now saved, was once a lost sinner.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.



9만일 우리가 우리의 죄들을 자백하면 그분께서는 신실하시고 의로우사 우리의 죄들을 용서하시며 모든 불의에서 우리를 깨끗하게 하시느니라. 15

We need to confess our sins early and often. You know God is merciful and, He is very patient. But, 15

sometimes also, God steps into a situation. How so? Sometimes He kills people. Sometimes He slays people.

This, frankly, is God’s business. I am a messenger here. Perhaps the widow is scared? I do not know what her

particular sin in the past was; because the Bible is silent there.

With respect to God slaying people though; We have already taught about Er and Onan as we preached and

taught through Genesis. In future preaching; King Ahab’s death will come up as we continue look at the life of

Elijah (COVID-19 Home Service topic). In Acts Chapter 5, coming up, we’ll see that Ananias and Sapphira ‘put

on airs’ [They acted like something was a certain thing; which it really wasn’t. They had seen Barnabas gain

recognition through a gift to the early church. They evidently wanted similar recognition. But, they didn’t tell

the whole story. They lied to the Holy Ghost]. Their issue involved money and the local church. This is one

reason that church finances must be open and honest. [That is why the IIBC Constitution requires Quarterly

Some instances where God intervened and slew people:

Numbers 32:23 But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. 23그러나 만일 너희가 그와 같이 하지 아니하면, 보라, 너희가 {주}께 죄를 지었으니 너희 죄가 너희를 찾아낼 줄을 분명히 알지니라.

"Be sure your sin will find you out" (Num. 32:23), says God, and so Adam, Cain, Achan, Ahab, Gehazi, Ananias proved. Let none think they shall escape Divine retribution: if punishment be not inflicted in this life, it most certainly will be in the next, unless we cease fighting against God and flee to Christ for refuge. "Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him" (Jude 14, 15). What is Elijah doing? 엘리야는 무엇을 하고 있는 것입니까?

Is he crazy? 그가 미쳤나요?

What does he intend to do? 그는 무엇을 하려고 하는 것입니까?

This type of incident may not have happened to you yet. 이런 종류의 일은 당신에게 아직 일어난 적이 없을 것입니다.

Do you pray for others? Do you Read your Bible for spiritual insight to give to others? Do you Go to church 16

to serve God by exercising your Spiritual Gifts in the local church? Do you tithe? Do you tithe from the gross?

Do you say that others should tithe; but not tithe? Do you witness? When is the last time that you gave someone

a IIBC bi-lingual GSPS tract?



You mean where someone dies and comes back to life? 죽은 사람을 다시 살리는 걸 말하는 건가요?

No. 아니요.

I mean, an incident where someone drops a MAJOR significant problem of theirs into your ‘proverbial’ lap and needs your prayers to solve it RIGHT now. 어떤 사람이 당신에게 아주 중요한 문제를 가져와서, 17

그 일이 해결될 수 있도록 기도를 해 달라고 하는 상황을 말하는 것입니다.

Would you (Could you) drop to your knees, confess your sins, and get ahold of God RIGHT now? 지금 당신의 무릎을 꿇고, 죄를 고백하며, 하나님을 붙잡지 않으시겠습니까?

Elijah is trying to help. He is going to pray. 엘리야는 도우려 하고 있18

We have several medical professionals in our congregation. They have frequently seen life and death.17

Sometimes you have to let others help you. That is okay. We do not have to be perfect – just Biblical. We 18

should strive to do our best.

How loud was Elijah praying? We don’t know for sure. Praying louder does not mean that God hears it any 23better?

Did the Lord bring evil? [No, I don’t think so.] 25

ARE YOU SAVED?

This is the question of the ages. Men were created to worship their Creator. You can know for 100% sure that you are saved. To understand this you’ll need to get out your Bible and look at a few verses.

1. All men are sinners. Read Romans 3:10

A s it is written, There is none righteous, no not one: and Romans 3:23

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

2. There is a penalty for sin. Read Romans 5:12

An event in the external world brought about by the immediate agency or the simple volition of God, operating without the use of means capable of being discerned by the senses, and designed to authenticate the divine commission of a religious teacher and the truth of his message (Joh_2:18; Mat_12:38). It is an occurrence at once above nature and above man. It shows the intervention of a power that is not limited by the laws either of matter or of mind, a power interrupting the fixed laws which govern their movements, a supernatural power. “The suspension or violation of the laws of nature involved in miracles is nothing more than is constantly taking place around us. One force counteracts another: vital force keeps the chemical laws of matter in abeyance; and muscular force can control the action of physical force. When a man raises a weight from the ground, the law of gravity is neither suspended nor violated, but counteracted by a stronger force. The same is true as to the walking of Christ on the water and the swimming of iron at the command of the prophet. The simple and grand truth that the universe is not under the exclusive control of physical forces, but that everywhere and always there is above, separate from and superior to all else, an infinite personal will, not superseding, but directing and controlling all physical causes, acting with or without them.” God ordinarily effects his purpose through the agency of second causes; but he has the power also of effecting his purpose immediately and without the intervention of second causes, i.e., of invading the fixed order, and thus of working miracles. In the New Testament these four Greek words are principally used to designate miracles:

(1.) Semeion, a “sign”, i.e., an evidence of a divine commission; an attestation of a divine message (Mat_12:38, Mat_12:39; Mat_16:1, Mat_16:4; Mar_8:11; Luk_11:16; Luk_23:8; Joh_2:11, Joh_2:18, Joh_2:23; Act_6:8, etc.); a token of the presence and working of God; the seal of a higher power.

(2.) Terata, “wonders;” wonder-causing events; portents; producing astonishment in the beholder (Act_2:19).

(3.) Dunameis, “might works;” works of superhuman power (Act_2:22; Rom_15:19; 2Th_2:9); of a new and higher power.

(4.) Erga, “works;” the works of Him who is “wonderful in working” (Joh_5:20, Joh_5:36).

Miracles are seals of a divine mission. The sacred writers appealed to them as proofs that they were messengers of God. Our Lord also appealed to miracles as a conclusive proof of his divine mission (Joh_5:20, Joh_5:36; Joh_10:25, Joh_10:38). Thus, being out of the common course of nature and beyond the power of man, they are fitted to convey the impression of the presence and power of God. Where miracles are there certainly God is. The man, therefore, who works a miracle affords thereby clear proof that he comes with the authority of God; they are his credentials that he is God's messenger. The teacher points to these credentials, and they are a proof that he speaks with the authority of God. He boldly says, “God bears me witness, both with signs and wonders, and with diverse miracles.”

The credibility of miracles is established by the evidence of the senses on the part of those



who are witnesses of them, and to all others by the testimony of such witnesses. The witnesses were competent, and their testimony is trustworthy. Unbelievers, following Hume, deny that any testimony can prove a miracle, because they say miracles are impossible. We have shown that miracles are possible, and surely they can be borne witness to. Surely they are credible when we have abundant and trustworthy evidence of their occurrence. They are credible just as any facts of history well authenticated are credible. Miracles, it is said, are contrary to experience. Of course they are contrary to our experience, but that does not prove that they were contrary to the experience of those who witnessed them. We believe a thousand facts, both of history and of science, that are contrary to our experience, but we believe them on the ground of competent testimony. An atheist or a pantheist must, as a matter of course, deny the possibility of miracles; but to one who believes in a personal God, who in his wisdom may see fit to interfere with the ordinary processes of nature, miracles are not impossible, nor are they incredible.
