Sedimentation chamber• Raw sewage enters this chamber• Solids settle to the bottom• Fats and grease float on top• Bacteria breaks fats and solids to

the suspended solids• Water from the “clear zone”

(middle of the chamber) flows up behind the baffle to the anoxic chamber

Page 11: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

2

Anoxic chamberWater from the first chamber gravitates into this chamber.Sewage is treated by anaerobic bacteria.“Bio-balls” (filter media) create maximum surface contact area for bacterial growth.Media is suspended in a cage allowing non bio-degradable solids to fall through.

Aeration chamber

Aeration System –air is introduced into this chamber (24/7) by means of a diaphram blower. -Moving bed ensures maximum growth and contact for aerobic bacteria while it breaks pieces of activated sludge to prevent blockage.–Top 2/3 is aerated, it is during this cycle that water is air lifted from the clarifier and returned to 1st chamber- constantly reseeding first chamber with bacteria and denitrification takes place.Backwash System –2/day –Whole column –Backwash activated

clarifier• Treated water flows from the aerobic zone into the clarifier,

sludge settles at the bottom, reduces the suspended solids and the effluent exits for the post treatment with chlorine, ozone, UV (disinfection)

• The treated water from this chamber is air lifted and recycled to the 1st chamber during the aeration process, where denitrification takes place and reseeding the 1st chamber with bacteria, enabling the plant to cope with variable and peak flows.

Page 15: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

disinfection

• Treated effluent needs to be disinfected to kill E-coli, fecal coliforms and other harmful bacteria.

• UV, chlorine or ozone can be used for disinfection

• We strongly recommend UV because it is safe, reliable and has lower operation cost

• Only use good quality stainless UV systems

applications

• Sewage treatment- domestic, farms, guest houses/lodges• New developments• Retrofit for conservancy tanks• Retrofit for septic tanks• Rural areas• Re-use of water• Pollution control- where raw sewage pollutes the water sources• Secondary treatment of industrial effluent• COD reduction of industrial effluents before discharging into municipal

sewer line (prevent COD penalties)• Informal settlements• Temporary installations• Pre-treatment for municipal plants• Mobile ablution facilities ( can be installed into a container)

Page 19: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

Do’s and Don’ts

• Do: Service plant every 6 months

Replace UV lamp every year Replace Blower Diaphragm & Air filter every three years Use enviro-friendly detergents & chemicals (Biodegradable) For commercial kitchens / restaurants, use a good quality oil / grease trap • Below are some important notes to keep in mind whenever using a biological treatment

plant, irrespective of the kind of treatment process followed, or who the manufacturer is.

• Don’t: • Use harmful chemicals, i.e. Bleaches, chlorines, anti-bacterial detergents & -soap. It

will kill the bacteria in any biological plant • Introduce petrol / oil / grease / engine cleaner into the system • Flush paint / thinners down the sewer line • Overload the system

Case studiesBarloworld Maputo

The challenge:• The municipal water is not always of good quality• The supply pipe is too small for commercial development• Water is sometimes cut-off to supply neighbourhood• Electricity is not of constant supply• There is no sewer line• Water conservation is important• The solution:• Incoming water is collected into a 10 m^3 tank• The water from the tank is treated to be safe for the human consumption• Water is pumped to the building using a battery pack and inverter for

constant supply.batteries are charged from the grid• Sewage is treated using the activated sludge process

Page 29: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

Barloworld Maputo• Treated sewage is stored and used on the wash bay, to hose down mining

equipment before they go to the workshop.• Wash bay water flows through an oil separator and grit trap to holding

tank where it is ozonated.• Treated wash bay water is used for irrigation.• Incoming water is used three times but only consumed once.

Page 30: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

Case studyLa Cabriere Guest house

The challenge:• The old septic tank and the french drain system was no longer effective.• The bore-hole cannot supply enough water for the guest house and the

garden.• The neighbor built a new house and the french drain flooded his property

with partially treated sewage from the septic tank.• There is no sewer line.• Water conservation is important to the customer.• The view from the guest house must not be spoilt

Page 31: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

Case studyLa Cabriere Guest house

The solution:• Bore-hole water is collected in a tank and used in the guest house.• Waste water from the guest house is treated using the activated sludge.• Treated sewage is stored in the underground tanks.• The tanks are being topped-up with bore-hole water if needed.• Storm water is collected in the same tank.• Water from the tank is used for irrigation• In the rainy season, no irrigation is used and the overflow from the tank is

pumped to the nearby dam which forms the water feature.• A flint and walling floating fountain pump does the finishing touches.• All water at the site is used twice but only consumed once!

Case studyInternational school of kenya

The challenge:A new STP was designed to take care of sewage for the new extension of the school. The contractor doing the civil works did a poor job and the structure was unusable. The school would open in a few weeks and they had no STP.The solutions:ZF 4000 was flown from SA to kenyaThe hole was prepared before handZF4000 was installed and the customer could discharge sewage within a week of a plant leaving SA.

Page 33: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

Saving water in corporate buildings

The challenge:Many corporate building sonot have gardens, wash bays or any other usage for treated water yet they need to save and conserve. The municipal STPs struggle with the load. The solution:Activated sludge is compact in design and can be installed in the parking area.Waste water can be withdrawn from sewer line that leads to the municipal net work, treated and then used for toilet flushing.Saving can be as high as 30% which reduces the load on potable water demand, reduce as well the load on the municipal STP and save the customers money. There is no discharge to nature, thus no risk of pollution. No impact of the environmentIf there is a garden, treated water can also be used for irrigation.

Page 34: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

Saving water and money for the schools

The challenge:School garden, playing ground demands lots and lots of water.Treating the sewage from the school for reuse is not an option since peak loads are huge.BOD is high and during the school holidays there is no sewage discharge.Potable is being used for irrigationThe cost of potable water is high.Returning treated sewage from the treated sewage from the municipal plants are not feasible since it involves lifting of kilometers of roads and damage the other infrastructureThe solution:

Page 35: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

Saving water and money for the schools

• The school continues to discharge sewage to the municipal line.• At another point a screened saddle is used to extract sewage municipal

line.no screening at the school is needed since plastic will pass the saddle and be removed at the municipal plants.

• Sewage is treated with the activated sludge, stored and used for irrigation.• No peak loads, BOD load is lower and the water is available during

holidays.• The pressure on the municipal pipe network and sewage plants is less.• Potable water is saved• The school can save up to 80% on their irrigation water bill!• The same can be done for other sports fields and golf courses.

Page 36: Welcome to Genuine Environmental solutions

Developers saving money and improve cash flow in a new development

The challenge• Many municipalities can no longer accept more sewage at their plants,

thus forcing developers to seek alternatives• Infrastructure for sewage is expensive• Tradition package plant take up lots of space, noisy, consuming too much

power and are very expensive to maintain. The Solution:The activated sludge process will always be the solution!
