Most Holy Trinity —June 7, 2009
Welcome To
GOOD SHEPHERD Catholic Church
Menomonee Falls, WI
Today is Trinity Sunday. I have no inten-
tion of making any attempt to explain the unex-
plainable, the unknowable. I can only speak of
an image that works for me.
On Mother‘s Day, Larry and I were at the
baptism of our youngest great-granddaughter.
The gospel according to John that day was the
story of the vine and the branches. Fr. Steve
Forrest spoke about the connections we all have
with one another – like branches. That means
that everyone at work is coop-
erative, that family members
all put each other first, and
that the world is at peace and
so on. That everything is rosy.
Not hardly! We know through
these connections, what pain
comes when those to whom
we‘re connected are less than
loving. We feel those connec-
tions strongest in our families.
On May 17th, Deacon
Gene Christensen‘s homily was about the God‘s
invitation to an intimate relationship. God calls
us to ―love one another AS I have loved you.‖ We
are called to love as God loves, not the
―everlasting honeymoon… [kind] of love that is
without cost.‖ Love isn‘t something that happens
to us; love is a choice. We choose each day to
love those we will meet that day. Even when we
choose not to love one another, God loves us.
Even when we choose not to love God, God loves
us. God is connected to us and we to God. What
would the world really look like if we chose to
love one another as God loves? What would our
community, our church, and even our family look
like?
Families are connected by blood, by DNA,
and hopefully by a mature love that considers
each other first. Members resemble each other,
yet each is different. Families gather to celebrate
happy occasions – birthdays, baptisms, wed-
dings and holidays. They unite to strengthen
each other during sad, stressful, or struggling
times – funerals and illnesses.
Sometimes family members are connected so
deeply, they anticipate each other‘s thoughts or
actions. They ―read each other‘s minds.‖
For me, the image of family
helps understand the Trinity. It is
a perfect family, not only loving,
but being LOVE itself. Each mem-
ber is connected so totally that
all are one. Even though differ-
ent persons, the Trinity is one.
God is not separated by differ-
ences. It‘s we who are.
―It‘s not always easy to be family.
Parents remain connected to
their children, yet love them
enough to allow them the freedom to become
unique individuals. Good Parents give their chil-
dren roots and wings.‖ (Dennis Sylva in Living
the Word) Good Shepherd has been a good fam-
ily to me. It has given me roots in community, in
faith, in scripture, in worship. It has given me
wings to be different – to form a ministry to peo-
ple who are gay or lesbian and their families. Fr.
Steve said, ―We are all connected, whether we
are black or white, male or female, gay or
straight‖. We are led by God‘s Spirit, to go forth
and draw people into the mystery of the Trinity,
into the family of God.
Ann Castiglione
Sometimes family members are connected so deeply, they anticipate each other’s thoughts or actions. They “read each other’s minds.”
It’s all about connections!

Food Pantry Needs: Fruit & Vegetable Juice, Cereal, Pancake Mix
Note: A Different Mass Time! Mass on Friday, June 19th will be at
10:45 a.m. instead of the usual
9:00 a.m. We will also be celebrat-
ing the close of Vacation Bible
School at that Mass. Come join us!
To The Catholic Community of
Good Shepherd In our joy we
wish to extend
to all of you our
deepest
thanks for be-
ing the com-
munity that welcomed Mark back
into communion through the Catho-
lics Returning Home ministry. Scrip-
ture studies led by Rich Harter and
others among you enriched his faith.
Your invitation to participate in out-
reach ministries opened new direc-
tion for his life. Fr. Mich‘s question:
―Have you ever considered the
Priesthood?‖ set off a process that
resulted in last Saturday‘s celebra-
tion of Mark‘s Mass of Thanksgiving
in your church. The Holy Spirit works
in wondrous ways, and you have
been His instruments through your
welcoming spirit, through your exam-
ple, through your prayers. God bless
you! And thank you to all who
worked on making the celebration
last Saturday so wonderful.
—Bernice & Jerome Brandl, Mark‘s
Parents.

Tasting the Fire—a retreat with the mystics Location: Siena Center, 5635 Erie St., Racine, Wisconsin 53402.
Dates: June 21-27, 2009
Check-in after 1 pm Sunday. Retreat begins at 3:30 and ends with the
noon meal on the following Saturday.
Many today are drawn to the mystics--people of their times, then and
now, gifted with vision, lightness of being, intimacy with God, and com-
passion. Their writings engage our own seeking. Mystics awaken in us
our own deep knowing: aching loves (our own and God‘s); life‘s ―thin
places‖ of meeting; the soul‘s taste of divine fire. We meet the Mystery
of the strangeness and closeness of God.
With themes each day we will enter into the serious wisdom and humor
of such mystics as the Psalmists, Rumi and Hafiz; St. Catherine of
Siena, Mary Oliver, and Annie Dillard; Black Elk, Meister Eckhart, Tho-
mas Merton; Hildegard of Bingen, Teilhard de Chardin, and Anne
Lamott. Cost: $425 (incl. $50 n/r deposit)

Thank You, Good Shepherd! I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who made my Mass of
Thanksgiving such a success. I had such a large array of compliments from
those who attended the Mass and party. It was a very warm and wonderful
experience for them. On behalf of my family and myself, I want to thank the
tireless volunteers who served the meal and prepared and cleaned up the
facility. As always, Good Shepherd put their best foot forward and the week-
end will be remembered by all who attended. Thank you to the parish for al-
lowing this special event and for those who changed their plans to allow me
to celebrate this occasion. Thank you to Fr. Mich, Sister Joann, Shari Rodri-
guez, and Jerry Podkowinski for their efforts and extra work in making this day
so special for me and all those who attended.
Gratefully yours,
Fr. Mark Brandl
