From the Pastor’s Desk Praised be Jesus Christ! In 2001, I attended a parish mission in Vesper and on the first night the priest told the following story: The air-craft carrier USS Lincoln was cruising along the Atlantic coast line when radar spotted an unknown vessel in its path. At once, the cap-tain dispatched a message: “This is a US Naval ship, adjust your course 30° to the north.” A voice answered back, “Adjust your course 30° to the south.” The captain was perturbed. “I repeat, this is the Captain Robert Johnson of the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, adjust your course 30° to the north.” Again the answer came back, “Adjust your course 30° to the south.” Now the Captain said with all his might, “This is the twice decorated Captain Robert Johnson, commander of the USS Lincoln, the 2nd largest ship in the United States’ Atlantic Fleet, accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers, and numerous support vessels. I demand that you change your course immediately and identify yourself.” The voice came back, “Adjust your course 30° to the south. This is the Portland Lighthouse.” I always liked that story and find it funny every time I come across it. Besides illustrating something about human nature and how stub-born we can be, it alludes to the immovable reality of a lighthouse. When things are going well and the seas are calm, a lighthouse is basically a quaint building that captures our imagination with its solitary existence. But when the seas turn on us with a power that both frightens and endangers, we then view lighthouses as beacons of hope that guide us to safety. For some people, the Catholic Church can seem like a lighthouse in that we only notice her when the chips are down and we are struggling to find hope. As we begin to emerge from this time of quarantine and uncertainty, I hope we’ll feel that the Church has been a light leading us out of the darkness and into a peace that God alone can give. Holy Name of Jesus Parish has been a lighthouse for us and, please God, will long continue to lead souls through the storms of life to the far shores of Heaven. As we now begin the transition back to public worship, let’s pray for patience and docility as we abide by the rea-sonable demands that will keep us safe and healthy. What follows are the instructions that will guide all of the parishes in our Diocese as we return to God’s House, so as to worship Him in spirit and in truth. One reality to keep in prayer is that our timing is right . . . for ex-ample, if we rushed back too soon, we could be accused of being indifferent to people’s health and well-being. However, if we waited too long, some would rightly wonder if we really believe the Mass and public worship are essential to our goal of eternal life in Heaven. Trusting in God and our Bishops, what follows is the plan for resuming public Masses on May 30th and 31st. First of all, the obligation to attend Mass every Sunday has not yet been restored, meaning that you may refrain from attending Mass for good reasons. If you have underlying health issues or are nervous about getting sick, then you’re invited to stay home and keep Sunday holy by watching Mass on TV or on the Internet. By the way, we will only be recording the homily from this point forward, so if you’ve been tuning into our weekly Sunday Mass, you’ll have to look elsewhere. Please use good sense when determining whether to start com-ing to Mass again. Attendance at Mass on the weekends will be curtailed to 25% of our church’s capacity. Holy Name is the biggest church building in Wausau, meaning that we can allow up to 170 people to attend each Mass. Our ushers will be trained to seat you in a way that respects social distancing. Every other pew will be closed and only family members are allowed to sit closer than six feet apart. We’ll disinfect the church after every Mass and will keep the bathrooms closed (except for emergencies) because we just don’t have the personnel to clean them so frequently. If you’re coming to Mass, we’ll ask that you sign up by going to our parish website and using the sign-up ge-nius. It’s an easy way for us to know who is at Mass and for you to know how many people have already signed up. For those who do not have access to the website (or who do not have the ability to use this procedure), we’ll simply sign you up when you arrive. Yes, you can just show up at Mass, but using the sign-up genius will make it a lot easier to get you into church and seated. Keep in mind that we have to always keep you six feet apart, which includes on the way in, in the Communion line, and on the way out. You’ll find that there are no hymnals or anything else that you can touch while you’re in church. We’ll sing simple hymns that most know by heart. Com-munion will only be the Body of Christ, and for those who want to receive Jesus on the tongue, we’ll ask that you wait until the end of the line and go to Father to receive. Other aspects that you’ll want to know are that there will be no Holy Water, no sign of peace, no selling of Scrip, and no salamanders (just checking to see if you’re still paying attention). And if you come to Mass but are nervous about receiving Holy Communion, you’re welcome to come forward and receive a blessing instead. Masks are encouraged but not strictly obligatory. Please do not judge a person based on whether or not he wears a mask. The devil loves to divide and conquer us. And speaking of masks, I hope that many of you have your own. If not, we’ve purchased 200 of them and they’re available when you come to Mass. We’ll ask that you keep them and reuse them because of our finite supply. And I will not be wearing a mask . . . if you’re not comfortable with that (or with others not wearing a mask), you might want to wait until you feel more at peace before coming. Our ushers and ministers are all receiving training from the Diocese because we have to fulfill certain criteria before being allowed to open. We take this seriously and we promise to do our best to serve you with charity and patience. Please reciprocate the love. We ask that you not touch anything, and to that end we’ll open and close the door for you, we’ll take up the collection but not touch you in any-way. Our team of ushers will be masked and wearing gloves so as to increase your safety. It will be a very different experience of Mass for a while, but we’re just grateful that after missing 10 weekends, we’re finally coming back together. If you have questions or con-structive criticism, please contact me and we’ll do our best to accommodate. There are a lot of moving parts and people differ signifi-cantly on what they think is sufficient caution. We’re doing what the Church asks of us, and this is all in accordance with the best sci-ence available for now. Regarding daily Mass, we can have 9 people attend each day. On a first come, first served basis, please call the parish office and sign up. Daily Masses will begin on Monday, June 1st. I’ll have Mass Monday through Saturday of that week, and I hope to have 9 people at each one. Please call and sign up for just one or two to start; that way everyone who wants to come can do so.

I’ll end with a request: we’ll be disinfecting the church after every Mass. We have a cleaning solution and our team of trained ushers will do this as thoroughly as possible. Because paper towel is expensive and possibly limited in supply, we’re asking for you to cut up old clothes that can be used to wipe down the pews between Masses. We’ll use these “washcloths” just once before throwing them away. Please drop off your old clothes (and, if you’d be so kind, cut them into usable pieces before dropping them off) at the Parish Center during office hours this week. And speaking of office hours, we’ll be back to 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday this week. Thank you in advance for assisting us in this way. Whew, what a lot to keep straight! It’s been so long since we were together for Mass and many of you have suffered grievously the loneliness and emptiness of not being in church. Welcome back! I’d hug each one of you if I could . . . but an elbow bump or wink will have to suffice for now. I’ve missed you every day. Holy Name of Jesus, our parish, has been a lighthouse for each of us during these long and sometimes very dark days. But in the end, the light prevails – it always has and always will. We now adjust our course and set sail for the shores of peace and hope and reconcilia-tion. May God guide us as we follow His Son through the valley of the shadow of death, that one day we may arrive safely on the shores of His Kingdom! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

Summerfun cancelled: We tr ied our best to find a way to safely host some form of our annual event, but the circumstances conspired against us. I’m grateful to all who did their best to explore other options. For now, we are still running the raffle, though the date may be extended (we’ll keep you posted). Please do your best to sell as many raffle tickets as you can. It will be uphill sledding, but with your charisma and determination, you can do it. We are looking at some other future events to recapture some of the com-munity spirit that is fostered by Summerfun. For now, please remember that the funds raised by Summerfun (c. $40,000.00) are a part of our operating budget. That’s money that we’ll still need to raise in order to balance our budget. One excellent idea is for each parishioner to estimate the money that you would typically spend at Summerfun and make that a donation to Holy Name. You could put it in an envelope marked “Summerfun” and send it our way. Thanks for your prayers during this time of uncertainty. For the record, all of our parishioners are hanging in there and not a single one of us is sick with COVID-19. And because we don’t want to do anything that will endanger any of you, we’ve had to cancel Summerfun this year. But we’ll be back in 2021!

2020 Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II Mission Trip Update

In April, the 2020 Mission Team was forced to cancel our June 2020 trip to Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II orphanage in Lurin, Peru. Initially, the hope was that the trip would just be postponed a month or two. Unfortunately, as we find ourselves still in the midst of the COVID-19 restrictions, we realize it would not be safe to take our teens and adults to Peru anytime this summer. This fact was sadly shared with the Mission Team and all were very disappointed. Our disappointment was short lived though, as we were able to talk about plans for a trip in the future.

First, and this is something our group is very proud of, at the encouragement of Fr. Martin, we voted to give a $1100 donation to Casa Hogar from the money that was raised. This comes at a crucial time as Casa Hogar finds themselves trying to live through the changes that their Coronavirus lockdown has made for the children and the staff. Many unforeseen costs have arisen within their restrictions, some of those are: making room for employees to stay at Casa Hogar as they are not allowed to go between work and home, the shortage of computers for the virtual learning and the increased food costs due to having more mouths to feed for more meals. Msgr. Joseph Hirsch has recently been fundraising on Facebook for these increased costs and to help the 16 new children that were taken in from another orphanage earlier this year. As such, this donation comes at a good time for them. They are very grateful for the generosity of our parish and team members. Second, all Mission Team members will be able to use the money that they have earned for a trip to Peru in the future. There are two options that are less than a year away: 1) In January 2021 the Diocesan supported Optical Mission hosted at Casa Hogar can be attended (this is for adults only). This January option will work better for some of the team members that will be in college at that time as it will be during their winter break. 2) The team has been approved by Casa Hogar for a March 2021 Mission Trip during Spring Break, which falls during Holy Week. This is especially poignant as Fr. Joseph Walijewski’s last Mass was Palm Sunday 2006 and he died just two days later. The life and generosity of Fr. Joe is greatly felt during Holy Week by those living at Casa and in the entire community of Lurin. To take our group at that time will offer something that going at any other time simply cannot. Of course, if any member cannot join either of those trips, we will be going to Casa Hogar again in June 2022 for our usual trip scheduled every two years. Where does that put all of your generous donations? The items that Casa requested are greatly needed and will be sent with individuals or Mission teams as they go to Casa over the next year. At this time, Casa has three long term volunteers that are still trying to go this summer. The food items and coconut oil for teeth brushing will hopefully be taken by them. The other items, will be sent on a priority basis given to us by Casa. Anything that remains will go with the group when we take our trip in March 2021. As far as the monetary donations given to our group, that will all be given to Casa as part of the $1100 donation mentioned earlier. God willing, our Mission Team hopes to plan a clothing, first aid and supplies drive again in the Fall to gather the remaining items that are still needed at Casa. Until then, any donations that you planned to send to Casa can still be dropped off at the Parish Center or the Religious Education office. They will all be stored and be ready to go to the children as soon as possible. Finally, thank you for all your support of the teens and chaperones for this trip. This world changing pandemic is nothing that anyone would have ever expected, but one that we have worked through as a group. Our team has grown together over the course of the last nine months and we will continue to stay connected with our love and commitment for the children and mission of Casa Hogar.
