Application performance management (APM) is the monitoring and management of performance and availability of software applications
APM strives to detect and diagnose complex application performance problems to maintain an expected level of service. APM translates IT metrics into business value.

Deep Learning and Neural Network • Deep learning is part of a broader family of
machine learning methods based on learning data representations, supervised, partially supervised or unsupervised.
• Deep learning architectures: deep neural networks, deep belief networks and recurrent neural networks…
• A deep neural network (DNN) is an ANN with multiple hidden layers between the input and output layers.

CNN, ANN, LSTM
An ANN is basically a network of computing units linked by directed connection

From: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1701.01887.pdf
Applications of Deep Learning to TSs • Classification: CNNs/LSTM learns hidden features
by themselves, reducing the need for domain expertise which is introduced manually by human experts
• Forecasting: DNN /LSTM automatically learns hidden features and correlations via layer-by-layer
• Anomaly Detection: LSTM learns sequences containing longer term patterns of unknown length, and higher level temporal features
• Root Cause Analytics: one of the uses cases of classification

Anomaly detection
• Anomaly detection is the identification of items, events, or observations that deviate considerably from an expected pattern observed.
• Anomaly Detection is to model time series and, and find points/regions where predicted values are too different from actual ones.
Copyright 2012 Cisco Systems, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Challenges in APM Anomaly Detection
• Model: Learning normal behavior, for instance, the length of this time window generally needs to be pre-determined and the results greatly depend on this parameter
• Scalability: unbounded quantity of data points: multiple metrics time series of each element in the system
• Real Time: The high rate of incoming observations, the hierarchy of the system including nodes and tiers
• Accuracy: high false alarm rate

Applications of LSTM to APM Anomaly Detection
LSTM networks obviate the need for a pre-specified time window and are capable of accurately modelling complex multivariate sequences.
