WELCOME TO LINGFIELD Good afternoon and welcome to today’s SCFL game between Lingfield and Selsey.
This should be a closely fought affair, Lingfield are fourth on 22 points and Selsey
are fifth on 19 points. A win for the Lingers will strengthen their position where as a
win for Selsey will make the race for the top spots even closer. The Lingers have
now won their last 6 league games and are on a roll where as Selsey have lost
their last 3 so this could prove a turning point for either team.
A great result for the first team on Tuesday, a 1-0 win over Premier Division Broad-
bridge Heath has seen them progress to the quarter finals of the Peter Bentley Cup
and they now face a trip to Saltdean for the semi-finals, date TBC. In a fixture
change we now host Ash United here at Godstone Road next Wednesday
(7.45pm) in the Surrey FA Premier County Cup, please come along and give them
your support.
Disappointingly the u18s exited the Grant McLennan cup on Wednesday losing 2-4
at home to a strong Raynes Park Vale team. The Tom Coakley’s young team put in
a spirited performance but the visitors just edged it with a little bit more strength
and experience counting in the end.
The Sunday team have got off to a satisfactory start to their season sitting mid ta-
ble in the Redhill & District Sunday League Division Two with two wins and two de-
feats. This Sunday they welcome table topping Warlingham Reserves to Godstone
Road, kick off 10.30am. The Vets have entered a new league this season, they
now play in the Mid Sussex Football League Veterans Division. A disappointing
start saw them lose to a strong Horley Town team but a 2-2 draw at home with Jar-
vis Brook is hopefully the start of better things for Darren Maziere and his team.
Enjoy today’s game!

CAPTAINS CORNER
Tuesday gave us the opportunity to have a nice break from the league and test
ourselves against a team in the division above and I think we acquitted ourselves
very well. Connor Leach came in for Corbin who was struggling with an injury and I
thought he was very good which can only help us with fixtures coming thick and
fast over the next few weeks.
We spent the first half getting a foothold in the game and definitely had the better
chances but ultimately we could not break Broadbridge Heath down. The second
half started much the same until a straight red card for their skipper shifted the mo-
mentum towards us. We got the breakthrough after a slick move was finished nice-
ly by Nick Dembele who looked sharp throughout and we managed to hold on for
the 1-0 win and will now face Saltdean away in the quarter final. Credit must go to
Broadbridge Heath who I actually thought were better when they went down to 10
men and didn’t stop throwing bodies forward until the very end.
It was important for us to keep the momentum of the recent winning run going and
with key players coming back in to contention after lengthy spells out it certainly
gives the management a few headaches for future fixtures.
We look forward to welcoming Selsey to the Lair on Saturday who will be looking to
get back on track following a couple of recent defeats, but who have themselves
had a good start to the season. We need to keep on picking up points to put some
pressure on the top 3 if we are to achieve our aim this season but it has certainly
been a good last month so long may it continue.
Cheers
Gravesy.

Lingfield FC was formed in 1893, initially competing in the now defunct Edenbridge & District League for the first 20 years of its history. Throughout virtually all their history the club has retained its distinctive red and yellow colours, albeit in a variety of guises. After much success in junior and local intermediate football the club applied to join the Sussex County League (and senior football) in 1980, but were turned down af-ter the ground was deemed inadequate. However, Lingfield had more success with the Combined Counties League, which they joined the following season (1980/81). In 1981/82 Lingfield finished as runners-up in Division Two of the Eastern Division. Lingfield installed floodlights for the first time in 1983 and they were christened with a match on 2nd March against Brighton, a game that drew a crowd of 1,200. With floodlights in place, the club was finally accepted into Division Two of the County League, with the promise of less traveling and more local derbies to look forward to. After three seasons however, they were relegated to Division Three, and inter-mediate football once more. In 1993/94 Lingfield returned to senior football as runners-up to Bosham, but it proved to be a brief return, with relegation following the next season. In 1997/98 however, the club was promoted once more, this time as champions of Division Three, but again struggled to maintain senior status. In 2000 they finished bottom but avoided the drop, but were not as lucky with an identical finish the following year. 2001/02 saw Lingfield close to dropping out of the League altogether after they fin-ished bottom of Division Three, only to be saved by the merger of Ansty Rangers and St. Francis Hospital to form St. Francis Rangers. The following two seasons however, saw a steady improvement, finishing 3rd in the table (albeit 8 points be-hind second-placed Bexhill United) in 2004/05. The club also reached the final of the Division 3 Challenge Cup, but lost 1-3 to Rustington. In 2005/06 the Club fulfilled its promise of the previous season by going one better and returning to senior football after an absence of five years as runners-up to champions Peacehaven & Telcombe. Lingfield finished five points clear of third-placed Rustington, but the West Sussex club was once again to prove their neme-sis in the Challenge Cup, beating Lingfield 12-11 on penalties after the two sides had drawn 1-1 in normal time. Astonishingly, the shoot-out saw no fewer than 32 spot kicks taken! In 2006/07 the club finished in 10th position but in 2007/08 under manager Steve Perkins Jnr, secured promotion to Division 1 for the first time in their history by fin-ishing as runners-up to East Grinstead Town. In their first season in Div 1 in season 2008/09 the club finished in a highly respect-able 8th position, under manager Steve Perkins Jnr. In 2009-10 season Lingfield finished in 10th position in Div 1 In 2010-11 season Lingfield finished in 11th position in Div 1 In 2011-12 season Lingfield finished in 7th position in Div 1 In 2012-13 season Lingfield finished in 6th position in Div 1 In 2013-14 season Lingfield finished in 15th position in Div 1
CLUB HISTORY
OUR VISITORS… SELSEYSelsey Football Club was formed in 1903 and played at various grounds before setting up home
at the High Street Ground in the late 1940s. Selsey were a formidable force in the West Sussex
Football League and dominated the league in the 1950s. Their record in the West Sussex Foot-
ball League before applying for promotion to the Sussex County Football League was the envy
of many around. They won Division One on six occasions in 1937/38, 1954/55, 1956/57,
1957/58, 1958/59 and 1960/61, together with the Malcolm Simmonds Memorial Cup on four oc-
casions in 1955/56, 1956/57, 1957/58 and 1958/59. They also added the Sussex County FA In-
termediate Cup trophy to their haul in 1958/59.
Selsey made the step up to the Sussex County League in 1961 and made an immediate impact
on Division Two when finishing runners-up to champions Shoreham in their first season. The
competition was abandoned due to bad weather the following year, but Selsey gained promotion
to Division One in 1963/64, ending the season as champions and were also winners of the Divi-
sion Two Invitation Cup. The club remained in the top division for five years before being relegat-
ed in 1969. The highlight of their early existence in the County scene was when they appeared at
the Goldstone Ground, Brighton and were narrowly beaten by Eastbourne Utd 1-0 in the Sussex
Senior Cup in season 1962/63.
A return to the top flight was achieved in season 1975/76, again as champions, but within two
seasons the club once again found itself back in Division Two. They then endured a further nine
seasons in the lower division until they gained promotion back to Division One for the third time
in 1986/87, as runners-up to Pagham. Their two chances of cup glory during that time came in
1984/85 when they were runners up in the Division Two Cup losing to local rivals Chichester City
2-1 and in 1986/87 when they were eventual winners. Once back in Division One Selsey man-
aged to survive for four seasons, until finishing bottom in 1991 with just 12 points. They had an-
other chance of silverware in 1989/90 but again failed in the final when they lost to Langney
Sports in the John O'Hara League Cup but made amends by winning the County League five a
side tournament at the Brighton Centre. The club then had a period of success when they were
runners up in the Division Two Cup in 1994/95 and winners of it the following season, together
with winning promotion to Division One again in 1995/96.
The club then enjoyed its longest spell in Division One, a period of eight years, and it's most suc-
cessful time when manager Danny Hinshelwood took control of the club in the year 2000. Sea-
son 2001/02 saw them win the SCFA RUR Cup and the following year saw them lift the John
O'Hara League Cup. In 2000/01 and 2001/02 the club finished 4th on both occasions, their high-
est finish to date. Problems behind the scenes at the club however, saw them start the 2003/04
amongst the favourites for relegation. The annual curtain-raiser - The Norman Wingate Trophy -
did little to dispel those feelings, as Whitehawk thumped a woeful Selsey side 6-1. The remain-
der of the season followed suit as Selsey were duly relegated to Division Two.
Following two seasons of rebuilding and re-structuring, and with Danny Hinshelwood back in
charge after a short spell away, the 2005/06 period saw Selsey back to something like their best
when they gained promotion back to Division One, thus maintaining their reputation as one of the
County League's yo-yo clubs. It was not surprising that Selsey's best home gate of the season
(248) came against local rivals Pagham, but what was completely bizarre was the fact that the
lowest attendance at the High Street Ground (88) was for the visit of Sidlesham, easily their clos-
est neighbours with less than three miles separating the two clubs!

OUR VISITORS… SELSEY Back in the top division for 2006/07, Selsey comfortably maintained their position with an 8th
place finish and again posted amongst the best attendances in the League, bettered only by
champions Eastbourne Town and Three Bridges. They also won their way through to the SCFA
RUR Cup final again in season 2007/08 but could not record their second triumph of this long
established competition losing to Three Bridges. A fifteenth place finish kept them in Division
One and mid table seems to be the favoured position for the club having finished no lower than
seventeenth and no higher than tenth in the league since then. Another cup final appearance
was to come Selsey’s way in 2011/12 when they played Rye Utd in the SCFA RUR Cup, but
again could not record a win and lost 2-0. In 2011 the club made improvements to the ground in
line with the FA ground grading requirements and now has a ground worthy of its County League
status.
Selsey’s 2012-13 season saw some highs and lows. League wins at Hassocks and Redhill were
the pick of the bunch and an emphatic 4-0 thumping of Rye Utd avenged the cup final defeat
from the previous season. This was the best Selsey could do in the cups as they lost the next
round to Peacehaven and saw early exits from all other cup competitions. A total of eleven
league wins and twelve draws saw Selsey finish eighteenth in the league, only avoiding relega-
tion by four points.
The following season started with great enthusiasm and optimism. Ex Brighton and Hove Albion
favourite Adam Hinshelwood was in charge of the side and things looked good for the new cam-
paign. However a far from bright start saw Selsey draw their first game and lose their next three
before beating local rivals Chichester 2-1 at home in the league. Early exits were recorded in the
FA Cup and FA Vase and their league form was inconsistent. This form led to Hinshelwood re-
signing as Manager when they lost away to 2nd Division outfit Broadbridge Heath in the SCFA
RUR Cup. Ryan Pharo took over the hot-seat and stabilized the ship recording notable victories
against Pagham and Hassocks. Pharo’s rein at the Club however was short-lived and he was
removed from his post during March. The Club decided to take on a Youth policy and needed to
promote from within. Steve Bailey was promoted to the position of Manager and with half the first
team squad leaving the Club it was a difficult end to the season. In fact they lost seven of their
last eight matches only winning the last game of the season at home to Lingfield 3-2. This win
secured their place in Division One for another term.
The 2014-15 Season proved to be a very difficult time for the Club. The first team struggled in
the league and never looked like holding onto their position in Division One. They ended the sea-
son in bottom place with only eleven points to their name which meant relegation to the newly
formed Southern Combination Football League. Their cup exploits did not fare any better with
defeats in the first round of each competition.
The new season proved to be tough for Steve Baileys’s side and it took until the second week in
October before they recorded their first league victory. (The first game of the season was award-
ed to Selsey when Saltdean Utd FC was unable to raise a team). A couple of early Cup wins in
the Peter Bentley Cup and Division One Cup were an improvement on the previous term but un-
fortunately the side went out of these compettion before any silverware came their way. The pick
of the wins throughout the season were the victories against Crawley Down Gatwick (who were
top at the time), Langney Wanderers and Lingfield. However, defeats to Seaford Town (twice)
and Midhurst soured things a little. For the third season running Selsey were either, already rele-
gated, or needing a result on the last day of the season, to ensure they did not end up in a rele-
gated position. A 1-1 draw at home to Southwick was sufficient for the team to retain its Division
One status and plan for the season ahead.
MATCH REPORTSLingfield 1-0 Broadbridge Heath
Lingfield through to Quarter Final of Peter Bentley!
Kick off, and both sides felt themselves into the game as they both stepped into an un-
known. Lingfield certainly more prominent in possession and prepared to be patient with
their play, and looked the most likely with Mwanza, Dembele, Hodge and Wilford causing
problems down both flanks. A rather narrow set up from Broadbridge Heath (BBH) which
meant real work for the 3 central midfielders, however up to the task. Only change to the
side was the incoming Connor Leech for Corbin Turner in the base of midfield; who nota-
bly held his own, retained possession and won it back on key areas. Best chances of the
first half came for Richard Wetton, as firstly hitting across the keeper to only find the post
and away. And to also fall 1-on-1 with the keeper and be denied twice in succession!
Lingfield did have to defend a few set pieces from BBH, however stood comfortably
strong. Finished up evens 0-0, some good football played, still in the balance.
2nd half beginning with a real belief amongst the Lingfield changing room of a result. And
they began with detention of the ball, biding their time for an opportune moment. With the
game in the balance, it shifted as BBH's Captain No.6 went in for a tackle on Horn that
appeared to leave the ground; gave the ref not much choice, reduced to 10! BBH went
narrower, trying to set up a unit that can hold out, and fair to their credit, remained reso-
lute and organised. Lingfield with increasing possession and pressure on BBH could only
be prevented for so long, before a move from Graves to Clements onto Hodge who used
his pace to cut in and square to Nick Dembele who's turn and shot was prolific! 1-0 Ling-
field and now BBH had to come out and go for broke. With some pressure from BBH,
Lingfield stood strong when called upon, and kept a big period of possession to see the
game out as the Bears couldn't claw their way back into the game. Finished 1-0 Lingfield
FT. Saltdean saw past Peacehaven, so it shall be a fixture of last year in an away trip to
Saltdean. Should be very competitive.
7 in a row for the Lingers now in all comps; we attempt to make it 7 in a row in the league
on Saturday as we host Selsey at the Lair; 3pm Kick Off. Now 3 clean sheets in a row, 5
in the last 6, and two 1-0 wins back to back now showing a resilient character amongst
the squad. Thank You to all supporters who showed up, it's appreciated from all players
and management from both clubs! And we hope to see you again soon. Up the Lingers!
