Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify the steps of an organ system from system to cell given all the steps with 100% accuracy.
2. Students will be able to identify different cattle breeds given pictures of cattle with 100% accuracy.
3. Students will be able to identify what cattle are used for and other animals that are used for the same things.
Ok, this button takes us to the next page. Click it and we will learn a bit more about how to travel through this lesson.
Hi, students! This lesson has some interesting features and ways to travel through this lesson. Let’s learn a little about that.
The button that just appeared Is the back button. Did you miss something on the last slide that you want to review. No problem, just click that button.
The button that just appeared is the home button. When you click it, you will go to the slide entitles “Home” After you see this button, hit the space bar as if you are advancing the slide on a normal PowerPoint.
Great job! Now that we know about that button. Let’s add a new button to the mix! Use the space bar, as you would if you were changing slides on a normal PowerPoint. Click this button
to move on!

We are going to learn about cows this lesson! What are you excited to learn about? Type your answer in the white box below.
Organ Systems!
An organ system is the largest organitizational group of a cell. We are going to look at the cow’s digestive system as an example.
Organ System HOMEThis is a picture of the cow’s digestive system. Let’s break the picture down. Click on the dots to look at a singular area in more detail. After you have viewed both dots, click the next arrow.
First Stages of Digestion
Cows belong to a class of animals called ruminants. This simply means that it makes a while for digestion and that they have a specific way of digesting food.
First Stages of Digestion
Cows chew food to break it into smaller pieces and it is mixed with enzymes in the mouth and esophagus as it heads to the rumen.
First Stages of Digestion
The next stage of digestion happens in the rumen. In the rumen, microbes and enzymes break down the food. The digesting food roams freely in the rumen.
First Stages of Digestion
In the omasum, a certain amount of water is resorbed after leaving the rumen.
The next step is into the absomasum, or the stomach. This is where all of the breaking down of the nutrients and absorbing them happens.
Final Stages of Digestion
After the stomach, the food that is being digested moves on to the small intestine, last intestine, and cecum where the last nutrients are absorbed and the water is taken out and the indigestible material is excreted.
After the organ system on the scale of life the organ is next. We are going to look at one individual organ of the system we have previously looked at.
The large intestine is just one of the organs in the cow’s digestive system. Can you name another one?

The next thing on the scale of life is a tissue! Let’s move on and learn a little about the tissue in animals!
There are multiple tissues that make up one organ, however; we are not going to go into any detail about tissues. Just know that they exist and that their main job is to make up organs, connect organs, or generally ass more to systems.
Tissue
There are two fundamental different kinds of cells. Below are 3 examples of this.
Cells HOME
Here are an animal cell, a plant cell, and a bacterial cell. Click each for more information. Click the arrow after you have investigated all three.
Bacterial Cell
Bacterial Cells have a few thing that make them different from other cells. They are prokaryotic, which means that they do not have a membrane bound nucleus, they have a wall made of peptidoglycan they also have a flagella to help them move.
Flagella
No Nucleus
Cell Wall
Animal Cell
Animal cells are what are in cows! They do not have a cell wall but they have a membrane bound nucleus!
No cell wall.
Nucleus.
Plant Cell
Plant cells are similar cells to animal cells in the fact that they have a nucleus. They also have a cell wall made out of cellulose and plasmodesmata, which allow transport between cells. They also have various specilized organs.
Vacuole(specilized organelle)
Chloroplasts

This type of cell has a cell wall made of cellulose.

The next part of this lesson more about cows themselves. What makes a cow different from every other animal?
Cows are used to produce milk and meal for humans. They however are not the only animals that are used for this purpose.
What domestic animal serves similar functions as a cow?

C
Golden Retriever
Goat
Squirrel
Because cows are used to serve two functions for us, there are many different breeds of cattle that mostly serve one function.
We are going to move through the most popular breeds in the United States on at a time. Ready to jump in?
Here are the 6 most common breeds of cattle. Click on the dot next to the picture to learn more. Click the arrow after you have investigated all six of them.
Cattle Breeds HOME
Angus Cattle
This breed of cattle is primarily used for beef production. These lovely animals come in either black or brown varieties. This breed is very popular due in partly because of very clever advertising.
Hereford Cattle This breed of cattle is primarily used for beef production. There are two main varieties the “polled” or horned version and the traditional version.
Brown Swiss CattleThis breed of cattle is primarily used for dairy production, more precisely cheese production.
Guernsey Cattle
This breed of cattle is primarily used for dairy production. The milk that a Guernsey gives is very rich in vitamins.
Holstein Cattle
This breed of cattle is primarily used for dairy production. The milk is given is abundant and is great for drinking.
Beefmaster Cattle
This breed of cattle is primarily used for beef production. This cow breed was developed in the US for the environment of Southern Texas.
Since we have learned so much about the 6 most popular cattle breeds, let’s have a small quiz to see what we have learned.
Now, we are going to have our assessment. There are going to be a few main questions with many parts to each questions.
Click on the cow breed that meets the criteria listed below.
