Project Based Inquiry Science• Students learn science the way real
scientists learn, through–Collaborative group work –Hands on activities–Problem solving–Presenting solutions–Gathering evidence
Example: The Book Support Challenge
THE CHALLENGE: Design a book support that will hold a book at least 3 inches off of the table. You must be able to flip the pages. The book support should not crumble when the book is placed on it or wobble when you attempt to turn the pages.
Homework • Students have an
assignment once or twice every week.
• They normally have more than one day to complete it.
• Homework covers material we are learning in class.
• Test questions typically come from weekly work questions-great study tool!
Interactive Notebook• We keep a composition
notebook in science class. • Students use it every single
day. • Students are guided on what
is expected to be in the notebook.
• Notebook checks occur throughout the year.
• I keep my own so absent students can catch up.
Science Starters• Students have a science starter
assignment every day as soon as they enter the room.
• When they walk in, they know they are to get their science starter composition book and quietly begin the science starter.
• Every few weeks I will check them and give them a completion grade. This is worth a quiz grade.
Mastery• If a student has made less than
80% they have to reloop and retest.
• This can occur on my tutoring on Monday afternoons.
• Students that want to retest that made an 80% or above may do so, BUT tutoring is REQUIRED.
