Nuts & Bolts of MTHS

• School starts every day at 7:20 am and ends at 1:50 pm.

• Students take 6 classes per day. Classes are almost always worth .50 credits per semester. Your student can earn up to 6 credits per year toward graduation when they pass all their classes.

• Students have a half hour lunch. Lunch time is determined by their 4th period class.

4A= fourth period first, then lunch After

4B= lunch Before fourth period– The other way to remember is by 4th period

classroom: “First floor, first lunch. Second floor, second lunch.”

Nuts & Bolts of MTHS

• There are two main bell schedules: Normal & PASS– PASS schedules occur every Wednesday, Thursday,

and fourth Tuesday of each month.– PASS is a homeroom-type class, and Link Leaders

are embedded in each 9th Grade PASS class.– Students are encouraged to see their other

teachers during their PASS period, to get help with assignments.

– Students need a pre-arranged slip from another teacher to travel to that teacher during PASS.

• Occasionally there will be a late start schedule, assembly schedule, testing schedule, etc. All schedules are listed on the right-hand side of the main MTHS website.

• We have a closed campus. Students may go off campus for lunch in grades 10-12 if they have an “Off Campus Pass” which is available in the Attendance Office.

• Picture Day is Tuesday, September 9th

• Curriculum Night is October 2nd

• Homecoming is the week of October 13th , the Homecoming football game is Friday, October 17th, and the Homecoming Dance is Saturday, October 18th. There are dress-up days each day that week, and 9th grade students wear gray to school on Homecoming Friday).

What are some warning signs that your student may

be struggling?

Page 21: WELCOME to MTHS New Student Parent Night. Administrators Peter Schurke- Assistant PrincipalPeter Schurke- Assistant Principal –All 9 th Graders Dan Falk,

“RED” flag statements1. I don’t have any homework.

2. I did my homework at school.

3. I know that Skyward says that I am failing, but I’ve got everything under control.

4. That assignment is not worth very much.

5. I don’t need that class to graduate.

6. I’ve already failed this class and I can’t catch up, so it doesn’t matter anymore.

Page 22: WELCOME to MTHS New Student Parent Night. Administrators Peter Schurke- Assistant PrincipalPeter Schurke- Assistant Principal –All 9 th Graders Dan Falk,

Get help when you are struggling…

library. There is an after school bus that leaves at 3:20pm every day.

• Talk to your teachers during class, after school, or email teachers with questions (not the night before)

• Honor Society tutors may be available.• Find a study partner from your class.• Community Homework Center: Adult

tutors available at Terrace Park Elementary on T/TH evenings.

Attendance Matters!• Poor attendance is the #1 predictor of lack

of student success.• Monitor your student’s attendance regularly

on Skyward.• Contact the counseling center registrar to

arrange for Big Mouth calls (School Messenger) to go to your private cell phone number.

• Written excuse notes (in ink) must be provided to the Attendance office within 48 hours of an absence.

• Pre-arranged absence applications are recommended, and they are available in the Attendance office.

Page 24: WELCOME to MTHS New Student Parent Night. Administrators Peter Schurke- Assistant PrincipalPeter Schurke- Assistant Principal –All 9 th Graders Dan Falk,

When you are absent…• Students are responsible for “making up”

missed work if they are absent. Students are given one extra day to turn in assignments for each consecutive day they are absent. It’s also important to know the grading policy of late/missed work for each teacher. These grading policies are listed in the course syllabus.

• If a student will be absent for three or more consecutive days, parents may request homework from the Counseling Secretary. 24 hour turnaround is needed, and please know that some teachers will wait until the student returns to school to explain the missed assignment(s). If possible, emailing teachers directly about missed work is best.

Page 25: WELCOME to MTHS New Student Parent Night. Administrators Peter Schurke- Assistant PrincipalPeter Schurke- Assistant Principal –All 9 th Graders Dan Falk,

It’s important to follow school policies and use

good judgmentExample: Cell Phones

Cell phones are allowed at MTHS. However….- Cell phones are not allowed in classrooms

unless the teacher clearly states that they are allowed for specific times/activities.

- Cell phones are the #1 most often misplaced item, and are occasionally stolen. While we will thoroughly investigate, the school cannot be held liable for loss or theft of these personal items. - If you don’t bring one, you aren’t at risk!

- There are disciplinary consequences for inappropriate cell phone use.

Page 26: WELCOME to MTHS New Student Parent Night. Administrators Peter Schurke- Assistant PrincipalPeter Schurke- Assistant Principal –All 9 th Graders Dan Falk,

Medications…• Students can carry OVER THE COUNTER

(OTC) medications on their person and self-medicate when needed. Students can only carry a one-day supply, and must carry the medication in the original container.

• If the medication is prescribed, the school nurse needs to have this medication on file at MTHS. If the medication happens to be a controlled substance, staff will have to administer the medication to the student. The attendance office has the required paperwork for medication that must be administered by staff.
