AP PROGRAM ROBUST AT OCEAN CITY HIGH SCHOOL

Sixty-one students at Ocean City High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to

receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million high school students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. Students took AP Exams in May 2013 after completing

challenging college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student’s performance on AP exams. David Gilhooley qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Twenty-four students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are: Maham Ahmad, Bailey Blumenstock, Aine Boyle, Hannah Childs, Sarah Childs, Benhamin Colbert, Sarah Dondero-Skeels, Gabrielle DuBruille, Kaitlyn Fox, David Gilhooley, Christopher Gorski, Emily Johnson, John Kane, Leah

Kornberg, Lauren Loggi, Kathryn Marshall, Christine Mullan, Nathan Roberts, Dale Roeck, Jason Shirk, Matt Soens, Ivan Traczuk, Lauren Vetter, and Anthony Wilent. Seventeen students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are: Sarah Anderson, Isabel Benvenuti, Patrick Carr, Erica Catanoso, Sarita Charap, Jacqueline Davis, John Handshaw, Marlyn Logue, Flavia Martinez, Stephanie Nichols, Stephen Pashuck, Carolyn Previti, Jordan Sedotti, Lauren Sutherland, Courtney Thern, Kieran Tracey, and Melanie Wilezol. Nineteen students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are: Renata Altimari, George Beckert, Kevin Birk, Ciara Boyle, Erick Ely, Justin Goucher, Anson Hadley, Sara Kelly Cooper Kernan, Mary Mateer, Nate McKnight, Emily Meachon, Constance Meyer, Jesse Peterson, Samantha Ruszkowski, Mariel Salkeld, Angel Severino, Adam Walawender, and Rachael Young. Of this year’s award recipients at Ocean City High School twenty-six were juniors when they took the AP exams. These students have another year in which to complete college-level work and possibly earn another AP Scholar Award. Through more than 30 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admissions process. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,800 colleges and universities annually receive AP grades. Most four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or placement for qualifying grades. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP. The College Board is a not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. Founded in 1900, the association is composed of more than 5,700 schools, colleges, universities and other educational organizations. Each year, the College Board serves seven million students and their parents, 23,000 high schools, and 3,800 colleges through major programs and services in college readiness, college admissions, guidance, assessment, financial aid, enrollment, and teaching and learning. Among its best-known programs are the SAT®, the PSAT/NMSQT®, and the Advanced Placement Program® (AP®); Springboard® and ACCUPLACER®. The College Board is committed to the principles of excellence and equity, and that commitment is embodied in all of its programs, services, activities and concerns.

COMMENDED STUDENTS IN THE 2014

Ocean City High School announced that Maham Ahmad, Isabel Benvenuti, Aine Boyle, John Kane, and Carolyn Previti have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented by Dr. Matthew Jamison, OCHS Principal, to these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2014 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2014 competition by taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Constitution Day at OCHS is a day of celebration. This year on September 17 and 18 United

States History I classes all marked the occasion with guest speakers who gave out individual copies of the US constitution. US I classes were visited by administrators or police officers: Dr. Taylor, Dr. Jamison as well as Officers Gray and Reichanek took part. Each guest talked about the relevance of the constitution today both inside and outside of the school building. Students learned that our constitution plays a vital part in protecting them today.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

The National Honor Society has a busy start to the school year! They had a great time helping the parents get to where they belonged on Back to School Night. On September 21st, our students

helped clean the beach for the Coastal Cleanup. On September 28th they volunteered with the MS Bike Tour, a wonderful charity

event that helps those affected by Multiple Sclerosis. The Ocean City Half Marathon was the next volunteer stop for our members! They helped cheer on the runners and passed out water. We

are looking forward to a year full of service!

The Spanish and French Clubs held a car wash to raise funds for senior scholarships.

Ocean City Red Raider Band

On September 14, 2013, Members of the Ocean City Red Raider Band participated in the Miss America Parade in Atlantic City. The Atlantic Cape Honors Band is made up of marching band members from Cedar Creek High School, Absegami High School, Egg Harbor Township High School, Mainland Regional High School, Hammonton High School, and Lower Cape May Regional High School.

The day was perfect and our OCHS students were proud to represent their high school.

Miss Norton's TIES computer classes are filled with students who are NEW to OCHS…no matter what their grade level! What a way to have students get to know one another! First they paired up and interviewed a classmate and created an informative PowerPoint presentation about them (using a variety of backgrounds, colors, fonts, borders, and pictures)! We then learned how to navigate through our new OC web site www.oceancityschools.org and

Page 10: Welcome to new staff members!images.pcmac.org/SiSFiles/Schools/NJ/OceanCity/OceanCityHigh/Up… · of achievement based on student’s performance on AP exams. David Gilhooley qualified

learned about important OCHS web site links (Guardian Home Access to check their grades.....Turn It In.Com....Faculty Web Pages (including Miss Norton's Web Page). Students organized their Agenda Books paper clipping important pages of information and wrote in important upcoming OCHS events/dates (don't forget Mid Marking Period is October 4th; Homecoming Dance is October 19th; End Of Marking Period 1 is November 12th). In the days to come, students

will be registering and using Family Connection/Naviance (a program which will allow them to build their personal resume, search careers, examine colleges, and discover strengths and possible career interests).

After covering all of these skills....they were ready for a quiz! Students worked in groups to create a PowerPoint/Web Page/Agenda Book Quiz that will be used by the TIES students in Miss Norton's classes. GREAT JOB STUDENTS!!!!

Over the summer and during the month of September, Ocean City Student Council held and participated in many events. They ranged from fundraisers to scheduled activities. We held two

car washes, one in July and one in August. They were held at the Intermediate School, and we raised approximately $800 which will be put aside for later events. On August 10th, a few of the officers as well as general members participated in the Happy Home Orphanage Walk. We donated money and walked for a great cause. All proceeds went to the Happy Home Charity which helps girls living at the Happy Home Orphanage for Girls in India. Our first school event of the year was Freshman Orientation which took place on August 27th. Student Council members gave out schedules and locker cards when the freshman arrived and then were stationed throughout the hallways to answer any questions the freshman or parents had. It ran very smoothly, and we feel that the freshman received a warm welcome to their new school. Back to School Night was on Tuesday, September 17th. Once again, Student Council members were available for all parents who needed help locating a classroom or had any questions. It went off without a hitch. Our two upcoming events for the month of September are Club Carnival and Movie Under the Stars. Both events will take place on September 26th. We hope to get as big of a turnout as previous years for Club Carnival, trying to get as many students involved as possible. Movie Under the Stars is a new event this year. Napoleon Dynamite will be screened in the Senior Courtyard, and refreshments will be sold. We are hoping this event is a hit and continues for years to come. As for the month of October, we have some big things planned. The Hero Walk, Red and White Weekend, Spirit Week, Pep Rally and Homecoming are all on our agenda. We plan for them to go just as smoothly as September’s events.
