What’s so special about Lent? The Christian liturgical calendar is divided up into different seasons, or times of the year that are focused on different things. About three quarters of the year are marked as “Ordinary Time,” when we seek out God through our ordinary day-in, day-out ordered routines. Just like many things in life, we need the ordinary in order to fully appreciate the extraordinary. Many people love Advent, the time before Christmas, but I love Lent. So, what’s so special about Lent? The season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday, and it runs for 40 days (not including Sundays) through Holy Week, the week that ends on Easter. This 40 day time period is a reminder of Jesus’ own 40 day journey in the wilderness, where he was tempted by Satan and fasted. I love that this time reminds us of Jesus’ humanity, and how Jesus faced many of the same kind of tough situations and temptations each of us face. For Christ followers, Lent is a time to repent of our sins, be in prayer, to fast or give up something in preparation for Jesus’ death and resurrection. It’s a beautiful time to remember that we all have fallen short, we all have sinned, and, best of all, we all have the opportunity to make things right. We can solemnly observe Lent with the hope and knowledge that resurrection is coming. Have you given something up for Lent? Some people give up things for Lent like chocolate or caffeine, others add practices like daily devotional reading, letter writing or service projects. It’s not mandatory to give up something, but the idea comes from Luke 9:23: “Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” If you give up something that requires a small sacrifice on your part, you can be reminded throughout the season of the perfect sacrifice Christ gave us. If giving up something for Lent is done in a prayerful way, it can be a way to renew ourselves in Christ. As we move through this season of Lent together, consider what you can give up or add to make the season more meaningful. Share this experience with your family. I encourage you to add daily prayer and Scripture reading, spending time with God and being renewed. Be blessed,

Have you ever wondered how you could help support our Shine students between fundraisers? Well there is a way. We have started a new Prayer Partner Program for Sunday nights. The students are partnered up for a month with someone else in the group and they are each other’s accountability person. For every Sunday that they attend Shine, their name is submitted into a monthly drawing for a $25 gift card. If their Prayer Partner isn’t at Shine, it’s their responsibility to call or text to check in and see if there is anything they can do for each other. We are hoping some of our church family to help us collect $25 gift cards for this

The Children are Raising Money for Heifer International
for the Next 4 Weeks This Sunday the children will receive a bank to collect their money for Heifer project and an information calendar to teach them about the many different ways Heifer International will use their money to help others around the world.
Heifer International was begun by a farmer named Dan West. He was an aid worker in the Spanish Civil War. His mis-sion was to provide relief, but he soon discovered the single cup of milk rationed to the refugees once a day was not enough. And then he had a thought: What if they had not a cup, but a cow? Nearly 70 years later that philosophy in-spires the work of Heifer International to end world hunger and poverty throughout the world once and for all. The approach of Heifer is more than just a handout. They link communities and help bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Their animals provide partners with food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs, and honey can be traded or sold at market. When families have this sustaina-ble income, it brings new opportunities for building schools, creating agricultural cooperatives, forming community sav-ings and funding small businesses. The core of the model is Passing on the Gift. This means families share the training they receive, and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This extends the impact of the original gift, allowing a once impoverished family to become donors and full participants in improving their communities. The goal of Heifer project is to help families achieve self-reliance. This is done by providing tools families need to sustain themselves.

Lenten Brown Bag Lunch Bible Study
Wednesdays from 12:00-1:00PM You are invited to take Wednesday lunch breaks and journey with us through the Gospel of John this Lent. The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. It includes some of the loftiest and most loved verses in all the Bible: "And the Word became flesh...," "For God so loved the world...," "You who are without sin cast the first stone...," "I am the resurrection and the life...," "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." The writing is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that his readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they "may have life in his name." Please join Pastor Erin during Lent as we read Adam Hamilton’s study “John: The Gospel of Light and Life” in preparation for Easter. Feel free to invite your friends and neighbors to participate as well. The study will meet March 8, 22, 29, and April 5 and 12. Sunday Morning Lenten Study During the season of Lent, Rev. Gena Anderson will lead a church wide study on Rev. Adam Hamilton’s book, “Creed: What Christians Believe and Why”. In this book Hamilton explores not only what Christians believe, but also why they believe it and why it matters. The book takes a detailed look at major doctrines of the church which are found in the Apostles’ Creed. Topics will include: God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church and the communion of saints, the forgiveness of Sins and the resurrection of the Body. Copies of the book are available in the main office for $15. The class will meet at 9:30 and 10:50 in room 27-28 on Sundays, March 12, 19 and 26, April 2 and 9.

ARE YOU GOING TO “DO” LENT? "In earlier times, people used Lent as a time of fasting and repentance. Since they didn’t want to be tempted by sweets, meat and other distractions in the house, they cleaned out their cabinets. They
used up all the sugar and yeast in sweet breads before the Lent season started and fixed meals with all the meat available. It was a great feast!" Hence, the day before Ash Wednesday became known as Fat Tuesday. (From The Upper Room website) As was done in the past, many Christians do give up dessert or a favorite food during Lent. When my grandson Conner was about 13 years old, he gave up eating catsup….and for him it was a sacrifice because he used it on everything! I’m embarrassed to admit that I haven’t been successful when I’ve vowed to give up sweets. I forget! But I’m trying again this year. Pray for me. Giving and doing, not giving up something, is being encouraged as a way to grow closer to God. Giving up one
hour everyday to give or do is a huge sacrifice for many, but it’s easier when distractions are eliminated, i.e. an electronic fast. That time can be used to create a quiet time to hear God’s voice as you pray, to study the Bible, to call someone who needs to hear a human voice, to write a note and surprise a friend with a real letter, to volunteer at a non-profit, or to go through your closet and remove one item everyday that you haven’t worn for one year and donate it. Eliminating the clutter in our lives gives us the gift of time. During Lent, make time to share your faith with words and deeds. In His Name,

WE CARE…WE HELP FEED THE HUNGRY A BIG thank you to our Boy Scouts for leading the Scouting For Food project during the month of February. The final numbers are in: 203 pounds of non-perishable food was collected with the Scouts assistance and 160 pounds of food was donated by church members when they came to be photographed for the church directory. A total of 363 pounds of food has been delivered to Arlington Charities’ pantry. Thank you for helping to feed the hungry in Arlington.
