We are so excited that you have decided to become an Eagle.

You are about to embark on what may be the most powerful, interesting, challenging and entertaining time of your life—your under-graduate university experience. Be assured that in your time here you will have daily opportu-nities to live out the mission of Northwest: to deepen your spiritual walk, pursue intellectual interests, explore vocational and service op-portunities, attempt new challenges, and develop life-long friendships.

In preparation for your arrival, we have been working for months to ensure Orientation will include the critical informa-tion and experiences you will need to enjoy a successful transition into the community. Mark your calendar now for Wednesday, August 24, 2011! Nearly 70 student Orientation Leaders, faculty, staff, and even the President are wait-ing to unload your belongings and welcome

you to NU. We encourage you to read the following materials carefully, as they contain information to help you plan, prepare for, and ensure a successful transition.

On your first evening here, you will be assigned to an Orientation Group — led by Orientation Leaders who love Northwest and are eager to share their passion and insight with you. They will answer your questions, introduce you to college life, and help you connect on campus and beyond. With your Orientation Group you will also attend to practical needs such as discovering academic resources, exploring the layout of campus, or picking up your parking permit.

In the meantime, please select a SOAR (Summer Orientation Advising and Registration) Day and register soon. While you are on campus, don’t forget to pick up your copy of the Common Reading, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. And enjoy your summer!

By the way… we know beginning your college transition is a big event for the whole family! Feel free to bring your parents to ex-plore the campus and help you get settled.

We are excited you have chosen to join our community, and look forward to your contribu-tion to our future — we are confident God has great things in store for you.

On behalf of all of us here at NU…welcome!Jessica daniels Assistant Dean of StudentsPaul Banas Vice President of Student Development

Capturing the need for creativity, the possibil-ity of innovation, and the hope for a better future, with Kamkwamba we will explore our own faith, misconceptions, values, experience, and potential. We look forward to hearing your reflections and are excited to join in this op-portunity with you!

The annual Common Reading is designed to provide all new first-year students with a common intellectual experience to stimulate critical thinking and encourage a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff. “The Boy Who harnessed the Wind” highlights themes such as poverty, redemption, and in-novation that will prompt students to visualize and interact with a world beyond their own personal stories.

You will receive a copy of the 2011-12 se-lected text, The Boy Who harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, while you are on campus during a SOAR Day. Please finish the book prior to Orientation in August. And as you read, engage in the prac-tice of active reading – take notes, write in the margins, underline and highlight, and discuss your insights with others.

The Common Reading this year also serves as an introduction to the fall NU Focus. Every semester the campus learning community participates in a focused conversation about essential issues that surface at the intersection of Christian faith and society. Themes over the past two years have included social justice, re-lationships and sexuality, cultural intelligence and stewardship. NU Focus is more than just a single session event. Movies, lectures, chapel services, group activities, service learning, and community outreaches serve as venues where this conversation takes place over the course of a semester.

Engaging the NU community in a conver-sation about new artistic or scientific ideas that led to critical organizational or societal paradigm shifts, the fall 2011 NU Focus is titled Create and Innovate.

stUdeNt life at NU

In Student Life we believe faith and learning happen most effectively and holistically in community. We seek to assist students in the integration of faith and learning through a broad range of programs, services, and experi-ences. Concerned with the effect of the total campus environment on a student’s spiritual, academic, and personal growth, we focus on how a student’s faith affects decision mak-ing and value sorting in the circumstances of everyday life: roommates, study, leisure time, recreation, athletic competition, relationships, physical health, leadership, social activities, and self-discipline.

Take advantage of this opportunity for community here – immerse yourself in the Eagle Experience!

resideNce lifeResidence Life exists here at NU with the purpose of building a community commit-ted to the rewarding, difficult, life-giving, and perplexing work of living life well together. We seek to serve, love, and care for each other in such a way that everyone would experi-ence a deep sense of belonging. The Resident Assistants, Apartment Representatives, Commuter Representatives, and Community Builders all provide leadership within our vari-ous student populations. Know that you are being prayed for and have someone waiting to assist you in your transition to NU! Are you ready to have fun?!?

Northwest University Student Government (NUSG) offers lots of ways to get involved in campus life!

NUsG execUtive team

Elected each year by the student body, NUSG is comprised of the President, Activities Chair, Communication Chair, Senate Chair, and Treasurer. Together the team seeks to bring cohesion to all NUSG activities by fostering the NU community through positive, servant-driven leadership.

stUdeNt seNate

Student Senate seeks to intentionally serve student opinions, develop solutions, and cre-ate initiatives that improve the NU experience. In Senate, everyone’s opinion counts. Senators serve constituents as representatives of their communities (residence halls, apartments, commuters, FIRs, etc.).

stUdeNt activities Board (saB) & eveNt

coordiNators (ecs)

thiNkiNG aBoUt liviNG off-camPUs?Preparing students to Carry the Call, Northwest University is a Christian community of scholar-ship and learning. Northwest’s commitment to provide a community where students live on campus is embedded in this vision. Developing competency and maturity as Christian learn-ers, scholars, and leaders occurs partially as a result of the holy Spirit’s work in students’ lives through their relationships with other students. The interaction between people is a guiding and fundamentally important compo-nent of Christian student development.

We believe it is necessary for students to be immersed in community living for essential person-to-person encounters to be pos-sible. Therefore, as a condition of attending Northwest, most undergraduate students are required to live in university-owned residence halls or apartments.

hoUsiNG reqUiremeNtsAll full-time undergraduate students (reg-istered for 12 or more semester hours) are required to live in campus housing unless they meet the criteria for living off-campus and have applied and been approved for off-campus living by the housing Office.

Students granted off-campus residency are considered commuters. Commuters are stu-dents who are commuting from their parent’s home or an approved adult’s residence, stu-dents who are married and living off-campus, undergraduate students 21 years old and at least junior status (60 credits earned) on the first day of class each semester, students 23 years old or older on the first day of class each semester, or students working a job which pro-vides room and board.

Students who meet these criteria may apply to the Director of housing to live off-campus. Commuters on academic or citi-zenship probation may be required to live in campus housing during the semester(s) they are serving their probation.

If you would like to apply to live off-cam-pus, applications may be found at http://eagle.northwestu.edu/housing/. All off-campus ap-plications must be received by August 1, 2010. Approvals will be sent out as soon as possible. Please do not make alternative living arrange-ments until you have received approval from the housing Office.

We look forward to serving you this fall! Please let us know if there is anything we can assist you with in regards to your transition to the Northwest University campus.

You can reach us by e-mailing [email protected] or by calling 425.889.5334.

MONEY MATTERS...fiNaNcial PreParatioNAppointments are not required for each stu-dent to meet with a financial counselor prior to each semester start; however, it is a good idea to ensure that your finances are in order and confirm your financial plan prior to your arrival by reviewing the items below:

Complete your registration online. After you have registered, visit the Student

Accounts section of the Eagle web site to calculate costs and aid by using the online worksheet. Enter costs and aid to determine your estimated remaining owed balance for the fall semester.

Submit all financial aid documents required as noted on your financial aid award letter. All documents should be received by August 15 to ensure timely receipt of financial aid funds.

PaymeNt oPtioNsNorthwest University offers two payment op-tions to assist you in paying the balance due:

Payment in Full of the balance due must be received by August 30 for the fall 2011 se-mester and by January 9 for the spring 2012 semester.

Monthly payment plans are available by contracting with Tuition Management Systems (TMS). TMS is a budgeting service that is responsible for collecting and moni-toring payments for Northwest University.

TMS offers an interest free annual payment plan ($100 enrollment fee) which begins July 1 and ends April 1.

Late enrollment is allowed in this program, however the plan must be brought current at the point of enrollment in the plan.

For those who wish to enroll in this plan, please contact TMS at 800.722.4867 or www.afford.com. TMS will ask for your ANNUAL out-of-pocket budget, as it is an annual payment plan. Please DOUBLE your semester balance due in order to project adequate payments.

fall 2011 official BillBills will be mailed to your permanent address prior to the start of the school year. The first should arrive in June, showing the financial status as of that time. Bills after the start of school will be sent only to your campus mailbox.

The balance owed is due in full by the first day of classes unless you have contracted with TMS or have solidified additional loan funds to cover the owed amount. Please note that it is necessary to budget with TMS or secure loan funding for double the fall balance due in order to be adequately covered for the full academic year.

If you have missing documents (indicated on your Award Letter), you may print many of these documents from the Financial Aid Services web page at http://eagle.northwestu.edu/finaid.

iNterNet serviceAll campus residences include network jacks to connect your computer to online and internet resources.

You must have a network card (included on newer computers and laptops) and a standard Ethernet cable to connect to these jacks. If you own a laptop equipped with a wireless card, you can connect to our campus wireless net-work. (Wireless network cards must support the WPA security protocol — most newer cards will.)

You will receive your e-mail address, user-name, and password after your confirmation. An address usually is: [email protected] but verify your registration in-formation to make sure, as exceptions do exist.

softWareAs part of the Microsoft Campus Agreement program, official Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 discs are available for purchase in the Campus Bookstore. This me-dia does not include a perpetual license, but operates under the right-to-use license of the program.

In addition to specific licensing require-ments, each software product has minimum “system requirements”–computer hardware capabilities needed to effectively run the program. For the most current system require-ments, please go to Microsoft’s web site: www.microsoft.com.

PriNtiNGNorthwest University maintains a debit bal-ance system for student printing to campus printers and copiers, the purpose of which is to conserve resources and reduce our supply costs. Students are charged $0.04 per page of black and white printing, and $0.08 per page of color. The University subsidizes these amounts, as they are below our actual cost for supplies and printer maintenance.

Students must purchase pages before be-ing able to print, using cash, credit card, or by charging their Student Account. Printing pur-chases are not refundable. Student Printing Balance purchases and usage can be tracked on the Eagle Website.

We strongly recommend that you obtain health insurance so that you are covered for medical emergencies.

Accidents and illnesses happen, and we want you to be protected. If you are a student and you are not insured, you are eligible to obtain student medical coverage. Many com-panies offer very reasonable rates for college students.

Information is available in our Student Development Office, the reception desk, and the Library. You also may look on the web for reputable carriers.

If you bring a vehicle, Washington State requires all drivers to carry liability insurance. Please be sure to have evidence of insurance coverage in your vehicle.

health formDid you know that health Services can’t even give you a Tylenol tablet if you don’t turn in your health form? Please include all the in-formation asked for, so that we can give you treatment when you need it. Also, if you’re under 18, you must print out a hard copy, have your parents sign the form, and mail it to health Services.

To participate in intramural sports or some student activities, an insurance waiver form will need to be signed.

health issUesIf you have a significant health issue, i.e., severe food allergies, asthma, diabetes, or other is-sues, we encourage you to contact our health Services Department with this information.

Your medical information is confidential, but in case of an emergency your residential staff may need to assist you in providing this information to emergency personnel.

Finally, do you have all your shots? All stu-dents are strongly encouraged to visit your physician or public health provider to be sure your immunizations are up to date, including the meningococcal vaccine.
