GeTTING ARoUNd oAHUoahu’s public transit system, called TheBus, is a simple and convenient way to get to most attractions in Honolulu and Waikiki. Adult fare is $2.50* one-way, but a four-day unlimited visitor pass is also available for $25.* Visit www.thebus.org for custom trip planning (allow 3 days advance notice) as well as routes to most major attractions on the island.

Although TheBus can also take you to locations on windward oahu and the North Shore, many visitors prefer to rent a car for a few days to journey out of Honolulu on their own. A loop of the entire island is only 90 miles–an easy day trip. Roads to even the more remote destinations are usually well maintained, and driving rules are the same as anywhere else in the U.S., except that speed limits tend to be lower. As in any major city, traffic in downtown Honolulu can be aggravating. Just avoid morning and evening rush hours and allow a few extra minutes to reach your destination and find a parking spot. or rent a bicycle or moped in Waikiki! outside of the city, traffic is rarely a problem.

When driving around oahu, consider packing a cooler with drinks and snacks. You’ll encounter farm stands along rural roads offering the freshest shrimp, pineapple, and watermelon you’ve ever had, but conve-nience stores and fast food restaurants are harder to come by. With so many scenic outlooks and breathtaking beaches, you’ll find better views from a picnic bench than you will from any restaurant.

Any time you park your car at a lookout or trailhead, be sure to lock it and make sure valuables aren’t visible.

Waikiki/Diamond Head | INCLUDED ENTRY

The most famous volcanic crater in the world is mt. leahi, better known as diamond Head, and is located along the southeast coast of oahu, at the end of Waikiki. In the early 1800s, British sailors mistakenly thought the calcite crystals in the lava rocks they saw glimmering from a distance were diamonds, hence the name. diamond Head is a volcano that has been extinct for 150,000 years. The crater is 3,520 in diameter with a 760 foot summit. The hike is considered easy to moderate in exertion. It is certainly worth the breathtaking, unparalleled view of the coastline. A must see for any visitor!

Bishop Museum

With nearly 400,000 visitors each year, Bishop museum serves as one of Hawaii’s top destinations, providing hands-on educational experiences to help residents and visitors appreciate and embrace Hawaii’s rich culture. daily pro-grams allow you to discover more about Hawaiian and Polynesian

cultures through live, interactive presentations and exhibit tours. Planetarium shows showcase Polynesian skies and how voyagers navigated the Pacific using the stars.

We have taken the three floors of Hawaiian Hall and overlayed upon them the physical and spiritual realms of the Hawaiian people–from the first floor of Kai Äkea, the wide expanse of the sea, to the sec-ond floor, Wao Känaka, the realm of man, and the third floor, Wao lani, the heavenly realm. We reflect upon the gods, their different body forms, areas of responsibility, and their seasonal changes. We speak of the lunar cycle, which determined how Hawaiians fished, planted, and worshipped. We are filling the hall with Hawaiian voices, through chants, proverbs, and mo’olelo, stories.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace

The oldest cathedral in continu-ous use in the United States was consecrated on Bishop Street in Honolulu in 1843. King Kamehameha III gave land from the royal estate to Roman catholic missionaries as a ges-ture of reconciliation after years of tension between the island’s religious groups. Groundbreak-

ing took place in July of 1840 and the foundation was laid from blocks of coral gathered from nearby shores. Father damien, famous for his work at the leper colony on Molokai, was ordained here in 1864.

over the years competing and unrealized renovations continued, including the addition of Hawaii’s first domed bell tower, a French marble communion rail, and a Gothic porch–none of which survive in the cathedral’s current Romanesque revival style. In the 1960s, follow-ing the Second Vatican Council’s recommendations and a statewide resurgence in native Hawaiian culture, the cathedral incorporated local materials into the design, including heavy koa wood doors. Today over fifty percent of the congregation is Filipino American and more than 2,500 locals and visitors alike attend weekly mass on Sunday.

Note: The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace is located in the downtown Honolulu Area. Parking is free on Sundays.

oahu isn’t all white sand beaches and breath-taking vistas, downtown Honolulu supports a thriving cultural life, too. like Hawaii itself, Honolulu’s arts institutions are decidedly multicultural, honoring the islands’ place in the history of the Pacific Rim and as a contemporary international destination.

The Hawaii State Art Museum (HiSAM) opened in 2002 as a home for the state’s growing collection of local art from the 1960s to the present. It’s hosed in the 1872 Royal Hawaiian Hotel that was built during the reign of Kamehameha V. The islands’ only general art museum, the Honolulu Academy of Arts, has an encyclopedic collection spanning Western and Asian art from the third millennium B.c. to the 1990s. The Academy also maintains tobacco heiress Doris Duke’s “Shangri La” as a home for her extensive collection of Islamic art.

The Academy’s doris duke Theater is one of Hawaii’s most popular venues for films and the performing arts. chamber music Hawaii is one of many local cultural institutions that regularly perform here. The Theater also hosts many screenings in the annual Hawaii International Film Festival, ranked by Travel & Leisure as one of the world’s ten best.

Hawaii opera Theater brings full scale operatic productions like Carmen, Cosi Fan Tutte, and Rigoletto to life with a stellar cast of stars and a top-notch, all-volunteer chorus. They perform at the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall, which also hosts many of the pop and rock musicians whose tours bring them through Hawaii.

The Honolulu Symphony has the distinction of being the oldest Ameri-can symphony west of the Rockies. Their season includes both the masterWorks and Pops series featuring master musicians from around the world. on Tuesday mornings, stop by for a tour of the recently restored 1922 neoclassical beaux arts hall, complete with a demonstra-tion of the orchestral pipe organ.

The cost of bringing touring theater productions to Hawaii is extremely high, so Honolulu has developed several excellent local theater troupes, both professional and amateur, that stage everything from musicals to experimental black box productions. The Army community Theater produces Broadway revivals and has great shows for families.
