Welcome to our College!

Coleg Sir Gâr is a large, multi-campus, further education college. It has approximately 10,000 learners of which some 3,000 are full time and 7,000 are part time. There are approximately 1000 higher education learners.

The College is based in South West Wales and has five main campuses at Llanelli (Graig), Carmarthen (Pibwrlwyd and Jobs Well), Ammanford and Llandeilo (Gelli Aur). It also offers its provision on-line, via partnerships at community locations and in the workplace. Campuses vary in size and nature and most offer a variety of subjects.

The College has a comprehensive and broad range of academic and vocational education and training programmes. These range from pre-entry to postgraduate level, providing a service to the whole learning community. It offers further education, adult and community learning, higher education and work based learning. It also provides for large numbers of 14-16 year old school pupils who attend the College or are taught by College staff at their schools.

The College has an annual turnover of £30m and employs approximately 850 staff. Of these, roughly 450 are directly involved in teaching and 400 in support and administrative functions.

Our mission ‘to be excellent - the College of choice’ is a strong message to our potential customers as to what standards we have set and what we expect our learners to aspire towards. Raising their ambitions and ensuring their progression into employment and higher levels of education is a key priority alongside achieving consistently

high outcomes and standards in both learning and teaching.

Learner care and safety is also very important to us and the College has won several national awards in this area of its work. Respect, the awareness of diversity and the implementation of equality for all is fundamental to the way the College operates at all levels.

Learners are the focus of our college and we work hard to ensure they are successful. There are many opportunities to develop their academic, vocational and employability skills through a range of projects and activities in College and through a number of partnerships with schools, higher education institutions, industry and other public sector bodies in Carmarthenshire and beyond. Significantly, learners have a strong voice in how the College should develop in the future.

The future is exciting and we hope you will join us in making this College a vibrant, enjoyable and excellent place to learn and work.

We set high standards and pursue excellence throughout the Faculty; the aim of the majority of our students is to study for higher qualifications at various national universities including Oxford and Cambridge.

ACE is Coleg Sir Gâr’s More Able and Talented programme. It aims to challenge and improve our most able learners to ensure they reach their full potential. At Coleg Sir Gâr we recognise that these students need bespoke programmes that are tailor made to help direct them towards their university / career choice and to this end, each learner will have their own individual action plan to help them achieve their goals.

Other students go directly into industry to develop their careers after completing their chosen qualifications. Some students wish to further their interest in a particular subject area on one or more of our part-time courses. The AS and A level courses are based at the Graig campus, Llanelli. There are over 30 AS/A level subjects available in a variety of combinations.

Our Access courses help those who want a second chance in education or a change in career. They are an alternative method of achieving the entry requirements needed by mature students to progress to University level study.

“I really like the freedom that college offers though I was very surprised how much work is involved. You can be right at the top in school but with the quality of all the other A Level students in college, you have to really work hard to achieve good results. I particularly like the free study sessions as I like independent study and get a lot out of it, which is important for me as I am hoping to study medicine at university.”
