Adult Faith Formation The Adult Faith Formation Committee works hard to bring a number of different opportunities to grow in your Catholic faith. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has outlined three major goals for this effort. The first goal is to invite and enable ongoing conversion to Jesus in Holiness of Life. What this really means is to help each person develop a personal relation-ship with Jesus Christ. This really is the beginning of discipleship. We do this through prayer, both personal prayer and communal prayer. The Mass brings us together in communal prayer and also gives us the Eucharist and a personal time with our Lord. The second goal is to promote and support active membership in the Christian Community. This calls us to grow and share our faith with each other. This not only allows us to receive the ministries of the Christian community but also to contribute to its life and mis-sion through the generous stewardship of our gifts and talents. The third goal calls us to Discipleship. Our parish mission and vision includes forming all of us as disciples. Faith Formation seeks to help each of us become more willing and able to be a Christian disciple in our community and world. With these goals in mind the Faith Formation Committee en-courages you to take advantage and participate in in one or more of these upcoming sessions. Christian Service & Responsibility Pope Francis said “the key to ending extreme poverty and hunger is to recognize that behind every statistic, there is the face of a per-son who is suffering. Pover ty has a face! It has the face of a child; it has the face of a family; it has the face of people, young and old. It has the face of widespread unemployment and lack of opportunity. It has the face of forced migrations and empty or de-stroyed homes.” DID YOU KNOW? The Financial Health Program at Catholic Charities, a nonprofit agency of the Green Bay Diocese, has coun-selors that offer a variety of financial programs, resources and tools to help individuals and families strive toward financial freedom. Assistance is offered in Student Loan, Budget, Home Buying and Foreclosure counseling, Debt Management Program, Bankruptcy Services and more. Call (920) 272-8234 or Toll-free: 1-877-500-3580 ext. 8234.

WHERE DO YOUR DONATIONS GO?-Our $500 given to the Red Kettle Salvation Army campaign last December was used to help people in need right here in Door County.

Foundation for Children in Need (FCN) will use the $700 we sent to enhance the quality of life for the needy in India. In the poorest villages of India FCN has organized dignified housing, san-itary water, education, medical care and spiritual opportunities.

The Loaves and Fishes free meal served monthly at the Sister Bay Stella Maris site is prepared and served by members of several northern Door churches. Since this program star ted 7 years ago, over 4,400 meals have been served. 50 to 100 people attend each month. Our gift of $500 helps to fund the meals, which cost approximately $200 each month.

Dear Fellow Parishioners Our parish is in the midst of a discern-ment process which is being facilitated by communal discussions throughout August. It is a very exciting and energizing situa-tion. I know that the movement of the Holy Spirit always inspires me to be more con-nected to God and motivates me to be better at fulfilling my calling while helping me to experience the satisfaction that only God can give. Although discernment is very deep within the Catholic tradition, it is not widely known or practiced. It is also true that many Catholics are not very knowl-edgeable about prayer in general. Actually discernment is at the very heart of prayer providing the means by which we pray well. It is not complicated or difficult ex-cept insofar as we have to let go of so much of what we think is God, holy or right. So much of what we do in prayer is about our-selves and not about God. We need to move beyond our own self-preoccupation and move to what God is about, wants and leads us to. It is easy to follow the Lord. It is very difficult to decide and follow through with resisting our own inclinations, desires and thoughts.

A group setting for discernment can of-ten improve the process because there are more checks and balances, helping us to be more faithful to God than ourselves. Our parish process not only takes place in the context of a group but also has an objective experienced facilitator. Our facilitator, Pas-tor Frank Maxwell will lead the discussion and I will merely observe, speaking only when absolutely necessary. The process is never about what I want or what anyone in the group wants but what God wants. Do-ing as much as possible to safeguard against other influences than God in the discussions is so essential. These words from a website help us to better understand the process in general. ” Discernment is a gift of the Holy Spirit that orients persons to be attentive to the presence of God in our midst. In dis-cernment, persons sift through the many spirits that vie for our attention to hear the One True Spirit. “Discernment may be described as a means to: 1. recognize and acknowledge what God is doing and what God desires; 2. see a situation from God’s perspective; 3. listen to the Holy Spirit, who prays within and among us; 4. hear

and obey God’s voice. Communal discern-ment engages a group of people to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. It involves prayer, a humble surrendering of control, reflection on Scripture and listening care-fully to one another as together we seek to hear God’s voice. Our discernment discussions will begin with prayer led by the facilitator. After the prayer, people will speak one by one shar-ing their prayerful reflection on our mission and vision statements. After we have heard everyone speak once, then people can re-spond to what they have heard with what they hear God saying through the people who are speaking. We continue to search for the message from God which should be different than whatever we came with, not completely different but purified by listen-ing to what other people have to say. The presence of the Holy Spirit within the Christian community is not doubtful but our ability to listen and understand the Spirit is. Together, let us do our best to do so. In Christ’s love, Fr. Dave Ruby, Pastor

Seminarian Collection Kickoff Disciples need to support one another. That is why the Annual Seminarian Collection: Hope for the Future, Help them Today is so important. Last week or this week, you will receive a letter from Bishop Ricken requesting your help in supporting our local seminarians. Please return your generous contribution to this col-lection, using the pledge card and return envelope you received in the mail. A gift of $25, $100, $250, $500 or more will help our seminarians do what they need to do in order to bring Jesus to the world. Every gift makes a difference. Our seminarians are our Hope for the Future, Let us Help them Today! As a Diocese, we anticipate costs of nearly $1,000,000 this year for tuition, room and board, health insurance, support of the Office of Vocations and the work of Fr. Daniel Schuster and Fr. Quinn Mann. Our efforts are working! To make a gift today, visit www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give. This weekend, Patrick Costello, will speak at our Masses so we can hear about his calling and how we can help.

Worship and Music Column

TO THANK YOU……..

Often times, this column is used to ask for something

~To invite you to an parish event ~To ask you to participate in a ministry. ~To ask you to fill a need lacking in the parish.

This week, it’s different.

It’s to thank you.

To thank all of you that attended and helped with Dan Schutte’s recent concert and night of reflection.

To thank all of you that worship with us (especially when you’re on vacation).

To thank all of you that sing at Mass! To thank all of you that so generously and gra-

ciously give of yourselves in all our liturgical ministries.

To thank all of our musicians that share their musical talents with our parish.

Parish Membership Stella Maris Parish is delighted when new people want to join our parish and gladly wel-comes them into our faith com-munity. Contact the parish of-fice.

Infant Baptism The baptism of new babies and young children revitalizes our faith community. Please con-tact the parish office to make arrangements for baptism.

Adult Initiation The Catholic Church is always enriched whenever any adult chooses to be Catholic. Adults wishing to be baptized, or bap-tized adults wishing to be con-firmed, the RCIA program is available.

Reconciliation God’s great mercy is some-thing to be celebrated. Ritually we Catholics experience God’s unconditional love in the sacra-ment of reconciliation. Our pastor is available for this sac-rament on the 1st Thursday of

the month from 5:00-6:00 pm at our Baileys Harbor site (except holidays) and by ap-pointment.

Sacrament of Matrimony A faith-filled wedding is a joy-ful time for the couple and the parish. Our parish wants to have all weddings here be the best possible. The couple must meet with the pastor before a date can be reserved. Please contact the parish office at least 12 months in advance to begin preparation.

Ministry to the Sick Everyone needs extra compas-sion and care when his or her health is not at its best. As a parish, we try to meet that need. Communal anointing Masses take place twice yearly, with individual anointing done when requested. Parishioners in the hospital, nursing home or other institution are encour-aged to notify the office to arrange for visits or commun-ion.
