We will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday beginning with Mass at 7:30 am and ending with Benediction at 12:00 pm. PROMISES Today's liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God's will makes us "family" with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe--really believe--that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cathedral is a treasure in a diocese and in our tradition. It is not simply a "big church," as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that "the seat is vacant," and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop's point of view. --Rev. Join Caritas to “Share the Journey.” Caritas International wants to take you on a journey to discover why so many people are migrating and to distinguish truth from myths around migration. We invite you to join our global week of action (17-24 June) to come together with migrants and refugees to understand that by learning and sharing, we can sow hope rather than hide away in fear. “Hope is what drives the hearts of those who depart,” said Pope Francis on 27 September 2017 as he announced the Caritas ‘Share the Journey’ migration campaign. He gave an emotional endorsement for the need to build relationships between migrants, refugees and local communities. PROMESAS La liturgia de hoy está llena de promesas. La lectura del Génesis promete un final triunfante sobre el poder del pecado y un regreso a una nueva creación. La lectura de la segunda carta a los corintios promete que todo aquel que sigue a Cristo tendrá dificultades. Sin embargo, también promete, que podemos perseverar si reconocemos que Cristo está con nosotros, renovándonos cada día, y dándonos el valor y la fuerza que necesitamos para esta perseverancia. El Evangelio promete que hacer la voluntad de Dios nos hace familia con Jesús, quien perdona todos los pecados y triunfa sobre el mal. Hoy podría ser un buen día para que también nosotros hiciéramos algunas promesas. Podemos prometer dejar de engañarnos a nosotros mismos acerca de nuestras tendencias al egoísmo y el pecado. Podemos prometernos creer --en verdad creer-- que, aunque no estamos sin pecado, somos perdonados. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Basándose en las palabras de Jesús, Mariano de Blas, compuso su canto: "Entre tus manos". Este hermoso canto nos recuerda que "hay que morir para vivir", es decir, que no es nada fácil ser discípulo de Jesucristo. El mismo Jesús nos pide que nos neguemos a nosotros mismos (Mateo 16:24); que carguemos la cruz para seguirlo (Marcos 8:34); que perdamos nuestra vida por su nombre (Lucas 9:24). Todo esto porque Jesús reconoce que el grano de trigo debe morir para dar vida, para multiplicarse (Juan 12:24). El canto: "Una espiga dorada por el sol", de Cesáreo Gabaráin, nos recuerda que los cristianos somos trigo del mismo sembrador. Es Jesús quien nos siembra, nos cultiva, nos cosecha, nos tritura, nos amasa, y nos hace un solo pan consagrado a Dios. Somos granos de trigo que, unidos formamos el pan de la comunión que es comunidad. Para esto, cada uno debe morir a sus egoísmos y preferencias. Chia sẻ hành trình cuộc sống

Từ ngày 14 đến 17 tháng 6 này, tổ chức Caritas quốc tế sẽ phát động phong trào “Chia sẻ hành trình” cuộc sống, nhằm thúc đẩy sự gặp gỡ với dân di cư tị nạn qua liên đới cụ thể. Sau đây là bài phỏng vấn Đức hồng y Antonio Tagle, tổng giám mục Manila và chủ tịch Caritas quốc tế.

Hỏi: Tại sao tổ chức Caritas quốc tế và Đtc. Phanxicô lại coi việc tiếp đón các anh chị em di cư tị nạn quan trọng như thế?

Đáp: Hiện tượng di cư không phải là điều mới mẻ gì, tuy nhiên trong thời đại chúng ta nó là một hiện tượng thê thảm, vì con số các người bị bó buộc phải di cư tị nạn đông đảo như thế. ĐTC Phanxicô và tổ chức Caritas quốc tế đã đề ra chương trình này vì hai lý do. Lý do thứ nhất có tích cách nhân đạo. Đúng thế, di cư là một hiện tượng, nhưng ở nguồn gốc của nó có sự kiện các người di cư là những con người. Để mang lại cho hiện tượng này một khuôn mặt con người, chúng ta phải đón tiếp người di cư. Lý do thứ hai là lý do đức tin. Trong Thánh Kinh dân Israel bao gồm các người tị nạn, di cư sang Ai Cập. Chúa đã lo lắng cho cho dân tộc nghèo nàn này và đã dẫn đưa họ tới tự do, và Chúa Giêsu đã tự đồng hóa mình với người ngoại kiều, người di cư.

Hỏi: Phong trào “Chia sẻ hành trình cuộc sống” đang ra sao rồi? Ngài hy vọng gì nơi phong trào này và cả nơi “tuần hành động toàn cầu” trong tháng 6 này nữa?

Đáp: “Chia sẻ hành trình cuộc sống” là một dự án quốc tế của tổ chức Caritas. Chúng tôi vui mừng vì ĐTC đã khai mạc chương trình này hồi năm ngoái. Tôi cũng vui mừng vì trông thấy tại nhiều nơi trên thế giới, trong nhiều nơi có các tổ chức Caritas địa phương, chương trình này đang tiến hành. Chương trình đã khích lệ các giáo xứ tiếp đón, che chở và hội nhập người di cư. Chúng tôi chờ đợi “Tuần hành động” vào tháng 6 này. Đây sẽ là một thời điểm không chỉ có tính cách biểu tượng, nhưng cụ thể. Chẳng hạn tại Manila sẽ không chỉ có một bữa ăn trưa với các người di cư, mà cũng có một cuộc hội họp với các sinh viên đến từ các nước ngoài nữa. Cả trong các đại học, trong các trường học “Ngày chia sẻ hành trình cuộc sống” cũng sẽ được cử hành.

Hỏi: Ngài muốn nói gì với những ai sợ hãi người di cư tị nạn, với các chính quyền dựng lên các hàng rào để ngăn cản di cư

Đáp: Trước hết, tôi ghi nhận sự phức tạp của hiện tượng di cư. Thứ đến, sự sợ hãi đối với di cư không có nền tảng. Tuy nhiên, tâm thức thay đổi, khi tôi thấy chính mình nơi người khác. Trong cách thế này chúng ta bắt đầu cùng nhau chia sẻ lịch sử và hành trình. Điều thứ ba, tất cả chúng ta, tất cả mọi quốc gia trên thế giới đều đã có một lịch sử di cư. Ông nội tôi đã là một người Trung Hoa di cư sang Philippines. Chúng ta tất cả đều có trong mình dòng máu của một người di cư.
