What is Subject-based Banding?

From 2008, Subject-based Banding has replaced the Merged and EM3 stream in Primary 5 and 6.

It means greater flexibility for the child by giving her the choice to take a mix of standard or foundation subjects, depending on her strengths.

This helps her focus and improve on the subjects she is strong in while building up the fundamentals in the subjects that she is very weak in

How does Subject-Banding Works?

• School will recommend HMT to pupils who score at least a Band 1 (85 marks & above) for MT paper for P4 SA2

• Parents are allowed to opt for HMT at the end of P4 even if the child has achieved Band 3

• At the end of P5, all students who wish to continue with HMT in P6 must achieve at least a “A” grade (75 marks & above ) for MT paper & pass HMT. Parents are not allowed to opt at the end of P5.

School Examinations

• Common MT papers in SA1 & SA2 (Oral, Listening Comprehension, Paper 1 Essay Writing, Language Paper 2)

• Additional HMT papers in SA1 & SA2 (Paper 1 Essay Writing, Language Paper 2)

• Format is based on PSLE format

• Only marks for MT are used as criteria to decide whether the pupil can remain in the HMT programme at P6. Pupils must also pass HMT.

HMT and PSLE Aggregate Score

• Results for HMT will NOT be used for calculation of the PSLE aggregate score.

• ONLY the MT grades (i.e. CL/ML/TL) will be used for the calculation of the PSLE aggregate score.

Bonus Points for Admission to SAP Schools (for HCL only)

• Students in the top 30% of the PSLE cohort who take Higher Chinese at PSLE will be given bonus points for admission to SAP schools. This bonus points is only considered for admission to SAP schools.

or letter (only if child is unwell or other compassionate reasons)

- Permission has to be sought from Principal if it is on other grounds such as overseas trips during school terms
