the February 11th sermon:REAL: From Simon To
PeterInformation on ordering a DVD copy of this

Do you know what “Real” means?
• Not false• Genuine• Not imaginary or ideal
It means to be“Transparent”
• Passing light• Obvious
It is to be“Genuine”
• True• Real• Sincere
There is one man in the New Testament that the Lord seemed to put the
spotlight on, so we could be challenged and
encouraged to live in reality and
transparency…
There is one man in the New Testament that the Lord seemed to put the
spotlight on, so we could be challenged and
encouraged to live in reality and
transparency…
That man is...
He thought and responded just like you
and me(not like an angel)
He thought and responded just like you
and me He asked a bunch of questions He was fearful He was pushy He was emotional He lacked faith He was self-centered He got angry He cussed He made promises he didn’t keep He denied the Lord He felt horrible and useless
Peter was exactly like
most ChristiansBoth CARNALAnd SPIRITUAL!
He Was
He Was
Let’s look atSimon Peter
Simon was a common name
(there are at least seven ‘Simons’ mentioned in the
Gospels alone)
Simon Bar-Jonah was his full
name, meaning Simon, the son
of Jonah (or John)
We know nothing else
about his parents
Simon means“HEARING”
In Luke 6:14, Jesus also named him
‘Peter’Luke 6:14Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
Peter means“ROCK”
In Greek – PETROS (piece of rock or stone) In Aramaic – CEPHAS (rock or stone)
Jesus changed Simon’s name
to what it should be!
Hearing is one thing, but being
Rock Solid is another!
James 1:8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
James 1:22-2521 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
James 1:22-2523 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
James 1:22-2525 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
Peter’s name alwaysappears first when the
twelve disciples are mentioned in scripture
Matthew 10:2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
Peter stands outas the leader andthe spokesman
The twelve are also arranged in three
groups of four disciples
Peter is always mentioned first in
his group. And of the three groups, Peter’s is always mentioned
first!
If we are going to be Real and transparent in our Christian lives, we have got to make the move from Simon
to Peter!
In Luke chapter five, there are four things I see that can help us go from “Simon to
Peter!”
Luke 5:1-31 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
Luke 5:1-33 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
1. YOU CAN USE MY BOAT!
Luke 5:4-54 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
Luke 5:4-55 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
2. AT YOUR WORD, I WILL
Luke 5:6-106 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.
Luke 5:6-107 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
Luke 5:6-108 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
Luke 5:6-109 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
Luke 5:6-1010 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
3. I AM A SINFUL MAN O’ LORD!
Luke 5:11And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
4. I FORSAKE ALL AND FOLLOW YOU
I am willing to giveyou a chance
I am willing to dowhat you say
I know I am sinfuland you are Holy
I’m in with both feet
I Really, Truly, Sincerely And
Genuinely BelieveIn You Jesus
Christ!
