PhonicsPhonics is an approach to teaching reading and spelling that enables a

that combine to form words.

• Jolly Phonics- introduces actions and activities for the 44

Phonemes.

• Children work in phonics groups for 20 minutes every day

• Phonics is fun, visual and active.

Segmenting and Blending

• Blending and segmenting are reversible key phonic

skills.

• Segmenting consists of breaking down words into their

phonemes to spell e.g. f-i-sh

• Blending consists of building words from their phonemes

to read e.g. fish

• Both of these skills are important.

PRACTICAL GAMES • Hide and find- hide sounds around the room and ask your child to find

them. Can they think of objects beginning with the same sound?

e.g. s- snake, sausage, seal etc.

• Cross the River- Put phonemes and tricky words in the river. Children to pick a phoneme or word, read and cross the river.

• Sandpit- Hide sounds in the sandpit. Can they make a word with the sounds in the sandpit?

• Writing sounds- Can they write sounds or words in the sand/ glitter/ paintbrush and water/ playdough?

• Carpark- Use toy cars at home and ask your child to drive the car to the word ‘into.’

• What’s in the toy box? – Ask the child to take objects out the toy box beginning with the sound ‘p.’
