CLUB DIRECTOR: BRIAN HEFFERNAN

Brian is the head volleyball coach at Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. Playing collegiately at Penn State and beginning his collegiate coaching career

with the Nittany Lions in 1994, winning the 1994 NCAA Volleyball National Championship. Since 1994 Brian has worked side by side with some of the

worlds most successful volleyball coaches in places such as Pepperdine University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin and the

USA Women’s National Team.

While in southern California, Brian founded and directed the Renegade Volleyball Club from 1994 - 99. His Renegade teams competed at the highest

levels in the SCVA Region as well as nationally winning several open division team championships at the 16 and 18-under levels:

Davis Volleyball Festival 16-open National Champions 1996

USAV Junior National Championships 16-open/18-open 5th Place 1996 & 1999

USAV Junior National Championships 18-open Silver Medalist

SCVA Junior National Qualifier Open Champions 1996, 98,99 / Crossroads Junior National Qualifier Open Champions 1996, 1998 / Las

Vegas Invitational Open Champions 1999

USA Youth National Team – NORCECA Gold Medalist 1998

USA Junior National Team – Junior World Championships 8th Place 1999

An avid beach player growing up and while living in southern Cal after college, Brian also spent time training athletes in the sand. Two of Brian’s

protégé’s became the, then youngest AAA rated beach players in the history of the California Beach Volleyball Association. Brooke Niles-Hanson has

continued her career with a current USA ranking of 3 and SWATCH World FIVB Ranking as high as 9. Throughout his time in Huntington Beach, Brian

also helped develop and instruct the Junior Spikers Summer Beach Volleyball Camps.

Coaching Philosophy

Here are a few of the things I have come to believe in:

The Process is More Important Than the TrophyChampions build their skill set with a mindful focus on the details of their work. They are committed to behaviors such as poise and self control. These commitments that eventually lead to the team trophy for everyone associated with the program.

The Ability to Teach and Lead are CriticalThe most critical skills I possess are my ability to teach and lead. Teaching is measured by the ability to transfer skill and to problem solve within game and game-like situations. As a leader I enjoy creating a vision and putting the vision into action.

Great Teammates Make Teams GreatBecoming a great teammate means wanting more for those around you than you want for yourself. Every team member reaps great rewards as they embrace serving those around them.

Always Teach BELIEFEveryone values the language of hope. Wherever the athletes are on their journey they need to know that with hard work, they will have the right stuff for success in life, in the classroom and on the court.

“As a former collegiate athlete and experienced beach player, Brian understands the mind and

the heart of a competitive volleyball athlete. He can also effectively teach the necessary skills

and tactics to win at the highest levels both indoor and on the sand. In my times working with

Brian I always appreciated his ability to methodically build skills and teach tactics through a series

of progressions. This style allows his athletes to transfer and to apply concepts quickly.

Although Brian is a terrific coach, he is an even better person. The quality that I admire most

about Brian is his ability to relate to and challenge his athletes in a positive and compassionate

way.“

“Brian Heffernan coached me throughout my junior volleyball career and I know that I

would never be the player I am today without him. Both indoors and on the sand he

taught me the skills, discipline and dedication needed to become a champion. I am

currently part of the #10 ranked Beach Volleyball team on the FIVB World Tour and #3

ranked in the USA. I still use the techniques and strategies Brian instilled in me at a

very young age. He is without a doubt the best coach I ever had and cannot wait to

someday work with him again.”

"To this day when I have a new coach Brian is always my standard of measure. I confidently

speak for all of my teammates that our experience with Brian was not just about volleyball

but also about developing life skills. He showed us that you could lead by teaching. Through

his example we all witnessed a person who is process driven and more concerned with our

journey than he was with our outcomes. Above all, Brian often put the needs of others before

his own and in doing so he created a program culture where we cherished our commitments

to each other and the goals we strived to achieve as a team. I will always be grateful for my

years spent playing for Brian. I am now 31 years old and volleyball has taken me all over the

world. If not for Brian I likely would not have become a 3 time NCAA All American at Wisconsin,

a 2 time Big Ten Champion, a Wisconsin graduate or a professional volleyball player (13 years).

I hope I will someday be able to pay all of this forward.“

"Brian Heffernan inspires his colleagues and players. His perseverance and work ethic is

contagious. He is an expert at breaking down and teaching techniques and tactics to players and

coaches of all levels. He also teaches players how to strategize and think for themselves on the court

enabling them to make critical decisions under pressure. His heart is huge both on and off the

court. He inspires players and friends to always do their best and treat each other with respect."

"My perspective on Brian Heffernan is very unique because he was not only my club volleyball coach

in high school and my collegiate coach at Minnesota, Brian is also responsible on many levels for giving

my life more direction than most of us could hope for. I came from a challenging life situation and

although I have always tried to make good choices the circumstances could have easily taken me in the

wrong direction. I did not know it then, but when I met Brian as a sophomore in high school, his vision,

competence and character as a person and as a coach was a great blessing. It was difficult to see past

the realities of my life at times but Brian had a vision that would later be realized as a collegiate

volleyball player. Today, I am the first person in my family to earn a college degree. Through this

experience I was also able to play a starting role on two NCAA Final Four teams at the University of

Minnesota as well as see the world playing professional volleyball. None of this would have become

a reality if not for the extraordinary impact Brian has had on my life. He is without a doubt the type of

person and coach I want for my own children.“

"Brian is a dedicated student of the game with the innate ability to motivate, teach, and

rally his team to understand the daily efforts and mindfulness that ultimately leads

toward a larger goal. From day one as our primary team trainer, Brian instilled in us the

fierce desire to play with and for each other. His unmatched technical and tactical abilities

helped us focus each skill and drill in practice to ultimately win games and journey our

way to our ultimate prize. His carefully planned training and scout sessions taught us to

think for ourselves on the floor. It’s these mindful practices that helped lead us on the

road to success, winning the Big Ten in 2002 and making the Final Four for the first time in

school history in 2003."

John DunningStanford University, Head Women's Volleyball Coach

“I met Brian in 2000 while he was working at the University of Minnesota as an

assistant coach. At Minnesota I watched Brian help to transform a group of young

athletes into an eventual Big Ten Champion and NCAA Final Four team. Brian’s teams

have always had solid fundamentals, played hard and competed together. In his time

at Washington State Brian’s leadership helped to transform the team culture as well

as attract the type of athlete who would eventually be able to compete within the

Pac10 conference. Brian worked tirelessly as a recruiter and in a very short period

of time he had Washington State moving in a positive direction. Having spent many

years in the Pac10 I know he left the program in a much better place than when he

arrived.”

Christy JohnsonIowa State, Head Women's Volleyball Coach

"Brian Heffernan has had a tremendous impact at every program he has worked with.

Without exception, through his hard work and skill he has left each program better than

when he arrived. Brian has a great eye for talent and understands very well what it takes

to win at the highest levels. He is considered among the most skilled coaches in the

country and is very well respected as a coach who develops and cares for the student

athletes and the teams he works with. Based on Brian’s knowledge of the game, his

ability to recruit and develop talent, as well as, his personal skills, he is poised to develop

a nationally competitive program."

Pete WaiteUniversity of Wisconsin Head Women’s Volleyball Coach

“Brian is a leader who has a continuous vision for the players and the program. He has a

creative mind and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and methods to improve the

team. His personality allows the athletes to compete at the highest level and enjoy what

they’re doing. Brian understands the mental and physical needs of the athletes. His use

of yoga with our team has helped the athletes be the healthiest they have been in recent

years. Brian has impacted us tremendously as recruiter. He has connections throughout

the country and he is a tireless worker. He thrives in competitive situations and seeks

athletes who are passionate about becoming the very best.”

Mike HebertUniversity of Minnesota, Retired Head Women's Volleyball Coach

AVCA Coaching Hall of Fame

“I recently retired after 35 years as a Head Coach in Division I Women’s Volleyball.

During that time I hired and worked with several assistant coaches. Brian Heffernan

was one of the very best that I have ever worked with. Brian worked as our Associate

Head Coach for four years, from 2000-2003. During his tenure our teams at the

University of Minnesota reached historic milestones qualifying for four NCAA Tournaments,

winning a first Big Ten Championship (2002) and advancing to our first NCAA Final Four

(2003). His contributions to each of these achievements were essential.

Brian is multi-talented. In the language of a coach he is an all-skill player. He is a

great recruiter. He possesses great character. He is loyal and he is honest. He is a

gifted teacher of skill and tactics. And his professional knowledge base is outstanding.

He also demonstrates a wonderful touch in dealing with people. “
