Parsha Points by Netanel Barsky (5th grade at Akiba-Schechter) Brought to you by the ASBI Education Committee
In this week’s parsha, Hashem promises the B’nei Yisrael that if they keep his commandments,
they will have a happy and safe life in Eretz Yisrael.
However, Hashem also says that if the B’nei Yisrael do not listen, he will punish them with five
series of curses that include exile, persecution, and other evil things. Even though Hashem warns the B’nei Yisrael of harsh punishments that they could receive, He
says that He will not destroy them or break his covenant with them because He is their G-d.
The parsha concludes the Book of Vayikra and ends with the rules of calculation in regard to
different types of pledges made to Hashem, as well as the mitzvah of Maasser, the tithing of
produce and livestock.

“Villains in the Tanach” with Rabbinic Intern Eli Yoggev
This Shabbat, 7:05 PM “Pharaoh vs. Haman: Who Was Worse? How Do They Differ?”
This series on Villains in the Tanach delves into the biblical profiles of key villains in Jewish tradition, examining different antagonists: the Edenic serpent, Esav, Lavan, Pharaoh, Haman, and Amalek. The figures will be portrayed as typologies of one central trait. We will read the narrative and present our understandings of central themes and lessons—all from the perspective of the “villain.” From there, we will discuss the aforementioned trait, address its dangers alongside its positive applications, and raise broader philosophical questions related to the topic. We will also ask: Is this figure really so bad after all?
Host ASBI’s Intern! Email [email protected] if you can host our Intern on the following dates:
Yeshiva University Intern Sarah Robinson will return to ASBI on June 17-18.
KOREN MACHZORIM IN 5777
We are excited to bring the Koren machzor to ASBI for the High Holidays in 5777. The machzor is one of the clearest articulations of Jewish belief and one of the most powerful tools for Jewish spiritual life. The Koren machzor, with a translation and commentary by Rabbi Dr. Lord Jonathan Sacks, enables English-speaking worshippers to connect in new ways to one of Judaism's oldest books. The editorial choices of the Koren Publishing House make this machzor uniquely
suited for a Religious Zionist and Modern Orthodox congregation.
We invite you to honor your friends and loved ones and to support the spiritual life of the shul by dedicating one or more machzorim sets, or making a donation. To learn more and participate, visit asbi.org/machzor-5777.html.
BEIT MIDRASH WEDNESDAYS Join us on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM for an accessible and
thought–provoking shiur. Snacks will be provided.
