KOREN MACHZORIM IN 5777

We are excited to bring the Koren machzor for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to ASBI for the High Holidays 5777. The machzor is one of the clearest articulations of Jewish belief and one of the most powerful tools for Jewish spiritual life. The Koren machzor, with a translation and commentary by Rabbi Dr. Lord Jonathan Sacks, enables English-speaking worshippers to connect in new ways to one of Judaism's oldest books. The editorial choices of the Koren Publishing House make this machzor uniquely suited for a Religious Zionist and Modern Orthodox congregation.

We invite you to honor your friends and loved ones and to support the spiritual life of the shul by dedicating one or more machzorim sets, or making a donation towards the purchase of machzorim. Visit asbi.org/machzor-5777.html to learn more and participate.

“Villains in the Tanach” With ASBI Rabbinic Intern Eli Yoggev

This seven-part series on Villains in the Tanach will delve into the biblical profiles of key villains in Jewish tradition. Each meeting will focus on a different antagonist: the Edenic serpent, Esav, Lavan, Pharaoh, Haman, and Amalek. The figures will be portrayed as typologies of one central trait. We will read the narrative and present our understandings of central themes and lessons—all from the perspective of the “villain.” From there, we will discuss the aforementioned trait, address its dangers alongside its positive applications, and raise broader philosophical questions related to the topic. We will also ask: Is this figure really so bad after all?

ASBI INTERNS This Shabbat, we are pleased to welcome Sarah Robinson, Yeshiva

University Intern, to ASBI. Sarah will be giving a D’var Torah Friday night

and teaching a class Shabbat afternoon.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

“The Halakhic System: Reflections on Change & Challenges”

This Saturday, November 21, 7:30 PM at ASBI

Rahel teaches Mishnah, Talmud, and Halakha at Pardes Institute of Jewish

Studies in Jerusalem. She has spent many years studying Talmud and Jewish texts in both traditional and academic frameworks at Midreshet Lindenbaum, The

Shalom Hartman Institute, and Hebrew University in both the Talmud and Jewish education departments. In 2015, Rahel completed her studies at Beit Midrash

Har’el and received ordination from Rabbi Herzl Hefter and Rabbi Daniel Sperber. She lectures widely internationally on topics concerning women and Jewish law.

Rahel is the editor-in-chief and halakhic editor of “Ta Shma,” JOFA’s Halakhic Source Guide Series. She recently published the book A Daughter’s Recitation of

Mourner’s Kaddish. She is a founding member of Congregation Shirah Hadasha, a progressive halakhic minyan, which is enriched by both male and female

participation in synagogue ritual. Rahel hails from Boston and has lived in Jerusalem for the past eighteen years with her family.

For more information or to sponsor, email [email protected].

"The Use of Myth in Interpreting Sacred Texts”

A weekly class with Rabbi Dr. Julian Unger

Sundays, starting December 6, 7:00 PM at ASBI

Rabbi Dr. Julian Ungar is an interventional neurologist who trained in the U.K.

with a prior degree in music from the Royal Academy. He earned his M.A.

from the Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. in Ancient Near Eastern studies

from Brandeis University. His projects include such topics as Pain and

Spirituality, Chassidism and Post Modernity, as well as a reconstruction of the

musical notation of Psalms. His children are Eli, Naftali, Batya, Tsiona, Ayelet,

and Aliza.

Beit Midrash Wednesdays Join us in the Beit Midrash at ASBI, Wednesdays at 8:00 PM,

for an accessible and thought-provoking shiur. Snacks will be

provided.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Malka Zeiger Simkovich back

for a two-part series. December 2: “The History and Legacy of the Chanukah Story”

This lecture will review the ancient sources on the Chanukah story, focusing on the

books of 1 and 2 Maccabees as well as passages in the writings of Josephus and in

rabbinic literature. We will explore the tension between two threads concerning the

origins of the Maccabean dynasty: the military thread and the theological thread. We

will also discuss early Christian thinkers who presented the Maccabean family as

proto-Christian martyrs, and how the Chanukah story figures in early Christian

tradition.

December 16: “Jewish Uprisings in the Roman Empire and the Rabbinic

Approach to Rebellion”

This lecture will focus on the string of Jewish uprisings against the Roman Empire

that were carried out in the first and early second century CE, especially those in the

years 48, 66, 115, and 135. We will discuss what circumstances led to these

rebellions, and how they may have impacted rabbinic approaches to military conflict.

Dr. Malka Simkovich is a visiting instructor of Jewish Studies at Catholic Theological

Union. She earned an MA degree in Hebrew Bible from Harvard University and a BA

in Bible Studies and Music Theory from Stern College of Yeshiva University. She

recently completed a doctorate at Brandeis University, where she studied Second

Temple Judaism, early Rabbinic literature, and early Christian literature. Dr. Simkovich

also works as an editorial assistant for the Harvard Theological Review.
