PRECEs David Jernigan

O Lord, open Thou our lips: And our mouth shall shew forth Thy praise. O God, make haste to save us: O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord’s name be praised.

PRAyER oF CoNFEssIoN (spoken in unison) Eternal God, we give You thanks for the great cloud of witnesses within which we stand. But we confess that often times we are indifferent to Your will. You call us to proclaim Your name, but we are silent. You call us to do what is just, but we remain idle. You call us to live faithfully, but we are afraid. In Your mercy, forgive us. Give us courage to follow in Your way, that, joined with those from ages past, who have served You with faith, hope, and love, we may inherit the kingdom You promised in Jesus Christ.

Adapted from Book of Common Worship

s Those who are able are invited to stand.

Order of WorshipThe service of worship begins with the music of the prelude.

Through its power and brilliance, may you feel the majesty and glory of God; in its quietness, His peace. Once the Call to Worship has begun, please wait to enter the Sanctuary until the choir has processed.

PsAlTERO How Amiable Ralph Vaughan Williams

O how amiable are Thy dwellings, Thou Lord of hosts! My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found her a house, and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young, even Thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house; they will be always praising Thee. The glorious majesty of the Lord our God be upon us; prosper Thou the work of our hands upon us. O prosper Thou our handywork. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home. Text: Psalms 84 and 90

s hymN oF REsPoNsE 452O Day of God, Draw Nigh St. Michael

s AFFIRmATIoN oF FAITh The Nicene CreedWe believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Today in Shadyside Presbyterian Church

Response to Shooting at Tree of Life

Soon after the shootings took place at Tree of Life, Shadyside Presbyterian Church (SPC) visited the Jewish Community Center (JCC) and offered our presence to our neighbors. SPC was present at the Saturday night vigil in Squirrel Hill and at the interfaith service held at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall on Sunday evening. Individually, and together, we have lifted our neighbors in prayer, and we have joined alongside them in their mourning.

Through your contributions, the Mission and Urban Ministry Team has made donations to the three faith communities of the Tree of Life synagogue. If you would like to make an additional contribution, please place your check (payable to “Shadyside Presbyterian Church” with “Tree of Life” in the memo line) or cash donation in the pew envelope (please note “Tree of Life” on the outside), and place it in the offering plate.

We are in continued conversation with the JCC, and they ask that we “remain on standby.” They have no tangible needs at this point. In the coming weeks and months, as the media moves on, we will join the collective and difficult efforts of creating a closer community than we had prior to this tragedy. Please lift this challenge in prayer as well, and consider joining this effort.

About This Morning’s Music

The opening choir response is a setting of the Preces, a form of prayer which is one of the oldest in Christianity. The Preces finds its source in the pre-Christian Hebrew prayers of the Psalms in Temple Worship. The form consists of a series of short petitions by an individual, and responses by an ensemble. This morning, the Preces is sung by the Chancel Choir and our children’s choirs, the Bethlehem and Nazareth Choirs.

Louis Vierne (1870–1937) is best known as an organist and composer for the organ. He was born blind; his sight was partially restored when he was six years old, although it remained very poor. He studied organ with César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor. In 1900, Vierne was appointed as head organist at Notre Dame Cathedral. He died of a heart attack while giving an organ recital (his 1,750th performance) at Notre Dame in 1937. Although Vierne wrote works in many different genres, his organ compositions, particularly the six organ symphonies, remain the best known. The Messe Solennelle was composed between 1899 and 1900. The premiere was at Saint-Sulpice, December 8, 1901; Charles-Marie Widor was at the grand organ in the rear of the church, and Louis Vierne was in the front of the church with the choir and the small choir organ, which doubled the choir parts.
