From The Pastor’s Desk As we continue our celebrations in the Easter season, I am filled with gratitude for all the generous and dedicated parishioners who support the mission of our church. We are richly blessed! This weekend, we have a chance to thank Kathy Monacelli and Carol Fischer, longtime staff members in the Christian Formation Office, as they prepare to embrace retirement. Kathy and Carol have given so much of themselves to hand on the faith to the youth and children of our parish. We owe them our thanks and gratitude. Blessings on them both!

I am also profoundly grateful to all those who supported our 20th Annual Parish Auction. The Auction was a great success. Thank you for your generosity. I am also indebted to the wonderful volunteers who made the evening possible. Thanks especially to Doris Jome and Sue Rueding-er, the chairs of the Auction this year, and to their Leadership Committee. Job well done!

Please continue to pray for Deacon Jonathon, as he enters the final days of preparation for his priestly ordination. Deacon Jonathon will be ordained a priest on Saturday, May 18. May God bless him.

Please note the special Mass schedule this week because of the Spring Assembly of Priests.

Finally, I am preparing to depart for Washington, D.C., for one last summer of Canon Law stud-ies. My last day at the parish will be Monday, May 20. I will return in time for the Feast on the Blacktop, which begins on Friday, August 2. Thus, if you need me to attend to any last minute details, please contact me as soon as possible.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

-Fr. Aaron J. Esch

Now That School Is Ending, DO POOR

FAMILES GO ON A SUMMER VACATION? When you go on vacation this summer, you spend money on transportation, lodging, food and entertainment.

People who are poor and in need do similar things with their money during summer but not while on vacation, because they can’t afford one. They spend it on transportation—gas for their car to get to work or take a city bus, lodging—struggle to pay for rent month to month; food—go to a food bank or food share to get what food is needed; and entertainment—maybe watch TV, if they have one. Have you ever thought of a poor family’s needs while you are having fun on vacation?

YOU have an opportunity to help these poor families by taking $5, $10 or more from your vacation fund and donating it to make their lives a little better. Please put your donations in any of the four St. Vincent de Paul Poor Boxes in the church or an envelope in the collec-tion basket to the attention of St. Vincent de Paul.

PRAY AND BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU!

-St. Alphonsus St. Vincent de Paul Conference

Laudato Si – “Praise Be To You,” From The Care

For Creation Committeec Pope Francis has challenged all of us to “replace consumption with sacrifice, greed with generosity, and wastefulness with a spirit of sharing.” Each month for the next 5 months, the com-mittee will offer a “One Simple Act” suggestion to incorporate in our daily lives. Two weeks of doing something can make it a habit.

From Pope Francis’ encyclical letter: When nature is viewed solely as a source of profit and gain, this has serious conse-quences for society.

School Scene

An evening to remember. If you were at Good Friday services this past Holy Week, I am sure you were as moved as I was with the United States Army bringing the cross in procession with the three elevations as “Behold The Wood Of The Cross” was sung. The silence in the church was amazing, as all eyes were on the cross. This year, all of Holy Week was so prayerful, from Palm Sunday to Easter, and was a beautiful journey. I would like to thank Father Aaron, Father Britto, Father Kevin, Father Wally, Deacon Jim, Deacon Ted, and most of all Deacon Jonathon for a prayerful presence to our liturgies. Thank you to Dave Tomasiewicz for helping with our Altar Servers, as well as to the many young people who served these Masses. A special thanks to all in Music Ministry. Your many months of rehearsal added so much to our liturgies, and I am sure on Easter Monday, you all felt like you had run a marathon. In a sense you did. Thank you for your gift of music to our parish. To our “Art and Environment” Committee, you took our church space through a beautiful visual journey. From the simplicity of Lent and throughout Holy Week, you all offered so much love in your many hours of decorating. Thank you to Betty and Ron for working with me every Monday to plan and get things in place for the decorating team. To Mary Newell and our Lectors, the proclamation of the Word each weekend in Lent, the Call to Worship, the Passion on Palm Sunday and Good Friday were all shared with so much love and dignity. We are fortunate to have our lectors rehearse for all our liturgies. You certainly can tell work has been done to prepare. To our Cross Bearers, Sacristans, Wine Stewards, and Ushers, our appreciation for all the added duties you handled so well during these High Holy Days. You are amazing. Those who were at Holy Thursday services will join me in thanking the twelve men who answer the call each year to be apostles and reflect on what it was like to be with Jesus at the last supper. It was a very powerful even-ing with them, the presentation of oils, and the washing of the feet of

twelve people from our parish. To all of you and to the fami-ly that dressed the altar on Good Fri-day, thank you for your participation.

Finally, a heart-felt thank-you goes to our Liturgy Commit-tee for the hours of planning, contacting people, the inter-cession prayers and Penitential Rites, the Lent Call to Worship, etc. It is so awesome to work with all of you. To our parishioners, your beautiful comments, emails and notes let us all know that you were moved spirit-ually, and we thank you for all you offer to our parish. It takes all of us, working and praying together to bring this parish to life. As Liturgy Direc-tor, I find it so rewarding to work with all of these people and know that our efforts are touching hearts and uplifting prayer. Know that everyone is welcome to share their talent in any ministry here at Saint Alphonsus. It takes the work of many hands, and there are plenty of blessings to go around. I pray that the rest of the Easter season will be joy-filled for each of you, as we approach that beautiful feast of Pentecost on June 9.

With love and peace,

-Terry Piontkowski

Director of Liturgy and Music

The Service Committee at St. Alphonsus is wrapping up a successful year, one that exceeded expectations in just about every way.

In past school years, students were issued a non-uniform day on the final Friday of every month as a matter of course; this year, students had to earn that day each month via donations to vari-ous worthy causes. For example, in February, money was raised for the Hearts for Haiti program run by Catholic Outreach. We raised so much money for this organization that it sent us a formal “thank you” message. Just recently, students collected funds for Special Spaces, a group that redesigns the bedrooms of sick children to give them a boost in the place where they spend so much time.

As a final service, we are once again sponsoring the Angel Walk, which provides money in a “pledge” format, as the whole school walks a route through downtown Greendale and local envi-rons. On Wednesday, May 15, students will depart straight from church, as we once more under-take this worthiest of causes.

Please come and enjoy the musical Willy Wonka Jr. presented by the 8th Grade Class of St. Alphonsus School. Show times are Thursday, May 16, at 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at both 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $9 each, and all are gen-eral admission. You can purchase your advanced tickets by contact-ing Mara at 262-488-0054 or [email protected]. Thanks for your support!

Xaverian Missionaries Annual Mission Festival It’s almost that time again, church festival season 2019. The Xaverian Fathers, some of our wonderful “help-out” priests, are already preparing for their annual Xaverian Mission Festival. This year’s festival will take place the weekend of June 22 and 23. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. There will be a 10:30 a.m. outdoor Mass on the mission grounds Sunday morning, June 23. The St. Alphonsus Bell Choir provides all of the music for this very special Mass.

One of our most popular attractions and major income producers at the festival is the HUGE rummage sale. Chris Sowa, one of our parish members who volunteers her time to the festival rummage sale, requests that you search your basements, attics and garages, maybe ask some friends to do the same for items that you may no longer need or want, and consider donating them to this great cause. They only ask that the items be clean and have resale value. Please, no electronics or adult clothing. You may bring all items to the mission on Xavier Drive at 51st Street, just north of Rawson Avenue anytime during daylight hours. If you need help with larger items, please call Linda at the mission office at 414-421-0831. We would respectfully request that your items arrive at the mission ON or BEFORE June 15.

Also, to those of you who enjoy hand crafting, we are requesting small homespun items (dish cloths, wash cloths, table runners, placemats, coasters, wall hangings, etc.) for a new “local artisans” booth. If you would like to donate some homemade items, please bring them to Linda in the office, again, on or before June 15.

Volunteer help is always appreciated, before, during and after the festival dates. If you are able to help in ANY WAY, please call Linda at the mission office for information. The pay — not great, but the benefits — priceless!! Your support will, literally, reach “to the ends of the Earth.”

National Teacher Appreciation Week

May 6—May 10

PRAYER FOR TEACHERS Christ our Teacher, you conveyed your message through parables and proclamations, through mighty deeds and miracles, through silence, sacrifice, and love. On this National Teacher Day, may all educators be inspired by your example of patient invitation to truth. Grant them the grace to lead by example, to teach with wisdom and authority, and to treat every child with dignity. May they be strengthened to continue in this necessary work for the Kingdom of God. Amen.

Question Of The Week Theme: Jesus feeds us so that we can feed and serve others. Question for Youth: Jesus asked Peter three times to “feed my sheep.” Who are you be-ing called to help in your life right now? Question for Adults: Christ continues to feed us as his disciples, even after his death and resurrection. How does the Eucharist feed your faith?
