The final line of the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles is, “Repent, therefore, that your sins may be wiped away.” This is part of a message which Peter evidently often stated as he evangelized and spread the word about the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Penance, repentance, is an important part of our Catholic faith. One of our seven Sacraments, there is much in Church doctrine about the importance of this sacrament. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1424) it states, “It is called the sacrament of con-fession, since the disclosure or confession of sins to a priest is an essential element. In a profound sense it is also a “confession” — acknowledgement and praise — of the holiness of God and of His mercy toward sin-ful men and women.” When St. Peter was speaking and used the term “wiped away,” that had more meaning to the people of his time. Imagine if sins were listed on a document in ink. In ancient times the ink had no acid content, and thus it could be “wiped away” with a damp cloth. That was the image Peter was presenting. For us going to confession literally “wipes away” our sins. God’s forgiveness is central to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Sacrament of Confession (reconciliation) means that from God’s perspective it is as though our sins have never even occurred. In the Book of He-brews the Lord declares, “I will never again remem-ber their sins” — after repentance, that is.

Penitencia, arrepentimiento, es una parte importante de nuestra Fe Católica. Uno de nuestros siete Sacramentos, ay mucho en la doctrina de la Iglesia, sobre la importancia de este Sacramento. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (#1424) ahí dice, “Se le nombra el Sacramento de confesión, ya que revela que nuestra confesión de pecados, con un Sacerdote es un elemento esencial. Es un sentido profundo, también es “confesión” – dándonos cuenta del reconocimiento y elogio – de la santidad de Dios, y su misericordia hacia lo pecaminoso del hombre y de la mujer.”
Cuando San Pedro estaba hablando, uso el término “limpiar, o echar fuera” eso tenía significado más grande hacia la gen-te de su tiempo. Vamos a Imaginarnos si los pecados estuvie-ran enlistados en un documento con tinta. En los tiempos pasados la tinta no contenía acido. Por eso decía que aquello podía ser borrado o limpiado con un trapo mojado. Esa era la imagen que San Pedro estaba presentando. Para nosotros ir a confesión, literalmente (limpia o borra) nuestros peca-dos.
El perdón de Dios, es algo central en el Evangelio de Jesu-cristo. El Sacramento de Confesión (reconciliación) quiere decir, que en el punto perspectivo de Dios, es como si nues-tros pecados nunca hubieran o corrido. En El Libro de los He-breos, nuestro Señor declara, “Nunca más recordare sus pe-cados” – pero eso es después del arrepentimiento.

The Carmelite monks near Clark, WY roast coffee beans and produce tea which they sell to generate revenue to pay for their new monastery which is being built 17 miles northwest of Meeteetse. Their coffee and tea is available for sale at the St. Anthony Gift Shop. These make wonderful gifts.

A CALL TO STEWARDSHIP – MISSION DINNER MINISTRY: There was an inspirational article in our last monthly newsletter about the Mission Dinner Ministry, which pre-pares and serves dinners to our brothers and sisters at the Rescue Mission. The Ministry is in need of steward-ship support from our Parish family to help continue providing this monthly vital service. The Ministry’s needs include purchasing the food, preparing the meals in O’Reilly Hall, delivering the prepared meals to the Res-cue Mission, and then helping to serve the meals at the Mission (which can be a wonderful family experience). Each of these tasks are separate acts of service in our stewardship family, so please consider in what ways you may share your gifts by volunteering to help in one of these areas. National Day of Prayer
Please join us for a prayer breakfast in O’Reilly Hall im-mediately following Saint Anthony’s 6:30 am Mass on Thursday, May 3rd. The first Thursday of May is the des-ignated day each year.
Every president since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation. As much as ever before, our nation desperately needs our prayers. We hope you can join us.

The May Marriage Alive/ Cana Club Meeting will be on FRIDAY, May 4, at St. Anthony’s in O’Reilly Hall. The Social Hour will be at 5:45 p.m. and dinner will be at 6:30. We will provide a group picture which will be taken after the Mass. Please join us in O’Reilly Hall for des-sert. Certificates and a gift will be handed out in O’Reilly Hall (basement of the Church) following the Mass.
