ST. MARTIN of TOURS
PARISH
Pastor’s Pen Dear St. Martin of Tours Parishioners, Many adages can be ascribed to Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, the great 19th century English Man of Letters and convert to the Catholic Faith. Later in this bulletin you will read one which is a principle of the moral life: “To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” Later, Winston Churchill will modify Newman’s dictum slightly by substituting one word: “To improve is to change ….” But the saying of Newman’s is far more profound because it implicates not merely a kind of qualification of human life, but a definition of human life: human life is change, which necessarily implies: To not change means to not live. Once one decides to settle in to a static, all-too-comfortable, and non-self-examined routine, one may as well give up the ghost. Now, what I have discovered over the years – a discovery that I think is due to the fact that I came from a world without God, and I now exist in a world em-braced and imbued by Him – is that true change, and therefore true human life, is rarely possible without an express knowledge and love of God. This fact became most apparent to me when I returned for my 25th college re-union in 2016. It was clear to all (by my Roman collar) that I had changed con-siderably, and entirely for the better. Old acquaintances found me to be far more enjoyable, fun, open, compassionate, and youthful than I was as an under-graduate. By contrast, most of my class brothers and sisters were, with little exception, the same people I knew long ago, only a bit grayer and wrinklier. “You certainly are a moving target to say the least!” my old roommate David quipped. David is one of the most brilliant and energetic individuals I have ever met. An atheist as he was in college, he nevertheless remains as joyful, popular and fun to be around. But he hasn’t, to my mind, changed much. In contrast, to David I’m virtually unrecognizable. That’s the work of God. Let me ask each one of you: If you were to reflect upon who you are today and who you were many years ago, In what ways would you say you the same per-son, and in what ways have you changed? If you have changed (and we take it for granted it is in the right direction!), How so? And in what ways did God intervene to make this change happen? And, if you haven’t changed much, you need to ask yourself: What happened? What didn’t happen? Why did you stop changing? Why did you stop living? I began this reflection with the profound Newman, so indulge me by conclud-ing with this “little ditty” from a song from my youth by John Mellencamp, which contains this gem: Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone.
If the thrill has gone out of your life, then you have not been living. Change! In Christ,
