March: Month Dedicated to Saint Joseph — Reflections by Monique Sammut

“Let us allow ourselves to be ‘infected’ by Saint Joseph’s silence! We need it greatly in a world that is often too noisy, that does not favor meditation or listening to the voice of God.”

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

During the month of March, we remember Saint Joseph – a man of faith and action. Saint Joseph has no recorded words in the Bible and very little is really known about his life. But what we do know, is that he

lived a hidden life of love and service, caring for Jesus and Mary.

From Saint Joseph, we can learn the value of silence. Mother Teresa once said, “We need silence to be able to touch souls.” When we spend time in silence and prayer, we are better able to hear the words God is

speaking to us. Interior silence is the foundation of everything else in life. We can also ask Saint Joseph to help us love and trust God more. He trusted that God knew what He was doing and what was best even

during the most difficult and dangerous times. When our lives are spinning out of control, we can quiet our hearts and turn to Saint Joseph, asking him to be with us and to lead us closer to God.

St. Peter Catholic Woman’s Club will hold its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 3rd at

Fasting and Abstinence in Lent Lent is a season of penance, and fasting and abstinence are

essential means by which we celebrate the Lenten season.

The laws of the Catholic Church (canons 1251-1252 of the

Code of Canon Law) on fasting and abstinence are:

Abstinence: All Catholics 14 years and older are obliged

to abstain from eating flesh meat on Ash Wednesday and

the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting: Catholics aged 18 to 59 inclusive are obliged to

fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these days of

fasting, one full meal is permitted as well as two smaller

meals that if combined would be less than a full meal.
