How we learn

Through play, children develop language skills, their emotions and creativity, social

and intellectual skills. For most children their play is natural and spontaneous

although some children may need extra help from adults. Play takes place indoors

and outdoors and it is in these different environments that children explore and

discover their immediate world. It is here they practise new ideas and skills, they

take risks, show imagination and solve problems on their own or with others.

Your child's day

Free flow play : This means children can choose to play inside or outside they are encouraged and helped to put on the appropriate clothing for the weather supporting there independence to grow. We go out in all weather including the rain!

Focus activities: This is an activity that has been planned by the adult for specific children based upon their interests and development.

Structured snack time : This is a time where children are encouraged to sit together and share a small snack. We encourage them to serve themselves and cut their fruit.

Circle time : This is a time when we sit together and share songs , books and special time.

At Winton we organise the day so that children can take part in a variety of child chosen and adult led activities. Below is some of the key aspects of the

How we track & support your child's

learning

Within the two year provision, we follow the early year’s foundation stage. This supports us to understand, track and develop children’s learning further.

We use IPADS to record developmental observations of children which are photos

and descriptions of what your child says and does. All IPADS are password

protected and adhere to our E safety policy. The IPAD’s are stored in the pockets by the entry door (overnight they are locked in a secure cabinet)

Observations/ photos are printed off half termly and filed in your child’s red

learning journey this is stored in your key persons file under the planning board. We welcome you to look at your child’s learning journey on a regular basis.

Settling into nursery life

At Winton we know that the first steps can be difficult

Over the next few pages we will explain what we put into place to make the transition into

nursery as smooth as possible. And the role that you the parent have in this process to achieve

the best possible outcomes for your child.

Key person system

We want children to feel safe, stimulated and happy in the setting and to feel secure and comfortable with staff. We also want parents to have confidence in both their children's well-

being and their role as active partners with the setting.

At home ; we encourage you to support your child's transition to nursery by looking at the photos of the staff team to gain familiarity before

joining.

The key person welcomes and looks after your child ensuring that their care is tailored to

meet their individual needs. She offers a settled relationship for the child and builds a relationship with his/her parents throughout his/her time at the nursery, to ensure the family

has a familiar contact person.

You will be informed of your allocated key person during your first play and stay session.

Partnership with parents

Within the nursery room ;

o Parents have access to their child's records and are consulted in all aspects of care

provided.

o Planning of activities is visibly displayed in each room.

o Parents are able to inspect all the policies of the Nursery at any time.

o The key person and lead practitioner will meet with you 3 times a year to discuss your child's development and progress.

o The staff team are available to talk to you daily regarding any questions / queries you may have

o We encourage you to share particular talents, reading a story (particularly in a different home language) to simply joining us on trips and special events.

We believe that a parent’s involvement in nursery life enriches a child’s experience and we therefore

invite and encourage parents and carers to become actively involved

Healthy eating & lifestyles

During your child's time at nursery they will be offered a small nutritious

snack. We make sure snack and meal times are social times at which

children and adults eat together and talk. It provides a fantastic

opportunity to introduce children to a wide variety of flavours and

textures, trying a diversity of ingredients from a young age. We

encourage children to serve themselves pouring own drinks and cutting

fruit.

A small snack table with fresh fruit and water is always available throughout the day for the children to access when they choose.

At home ; we encourage you to support your child's growing

independence skills supporting them to serve and feed themselves.

Behaviour Winton believes that children flourish best when their personal, social and emotional needs are met and where there are clear

and developmentally appropriate expectations for their behaviour

We are available to discuss any concerns you may have. Please read our full

Achieving Positive Behaviour Policy, you can find this signposted in the nursery classroom.

We work in partnership with children's parents. Parents are regularly informed about their children's behaviour by their key person. We work with parents to address recurring inconsiderate behaviour, using our observation records to help us to understand the cause and to decide jointly how to respond appropriately.

We never send children out of the room by themselves, nor do we use 'naughty chair’ or a ‘time out’ strategy that excludes children from the group. We avoid creating situations in which children receive adult attention only in return for inconsiderate behaviour. When children behave in inconsiderate ways, we help them to understand the outcomes of their actions and support them in learning how to cope more appropriately.

Valuing diversity and

promoting equality

Winton is fully inclusive in meeting the needs of all children. We recognise that children and their families come from diverse backgrounds. All families

have needs and values that arise from their social and economic, ethnic

and cultural or religious backgrounds.

The curriculum offered in the setting encourages children to develop positive

attitudes about themselves as well as to people who are different from

themselves. It encourages children to empathise with others and to begin to develop the skills of critical thinking.

Please read our full, Valuing diversity and promoting equality policy you can find this signposted in the nursery classroom.

We do not discriminate against a child with a disability or learning

difficulty or refuse a child entry to our setting for reason relating to

disability and/or learning difficulty

Page 21: Welcome to STARDUST - Creative Schools · Welcome to STARDUST Lead Early Years Practitioner Early years teacher status BA (hons) Early childhood studies Jade Manning We are really

Safeguarding

Winton primary school has a duty under law to help safeguard children against

suspected or actual ‘significant ‘harm.

All adults working with the children have enhanced DBS checks with the Criminal Records Bureau. We are required to follow procedures as laid down by the Area Child Protection Committee. If we are concerned about the welfare of a child, please refer to the safeguarding flow chart displayed in the room.

Please inform us of any accidents or injuries your child has outside of nursery. If a child encounters an injury outside nursery, parents are asked how it happened ; the details are recorded on a ‘mark on arrival’ form which you will be asked to complete and sign. This is kept in your child’s confidential file, unless any necessary action needs to be taken, or help sought. Our way of working with children and their families ensures we are aware of any problems that may arise and can offer support including referral to appropriate agencies when

necessary to help families in difficulty.

Please read our full Safeguarding Policy , you can find this signposted in the nursery classroom.
