Unpacking the QuestionUnpacking the QuestionPresented by Jacqueline WillisPresented by Jacqueline Willis

6 easy steps

Unpacking the Question1. Read ALL the question and ALL the answers.

Put a check.2. What is the question asking? Write a sentence

in your own words explaining what is being asked.

3. Consider each answer choice. Eliminate TWO incorrect answers, if you can. Label them XX and ??.

4. Reread the two that are left, and look back in the selection to choose the correct (or best) answer.

5. List each answer choice that is incorrect (yes, all 3) and explain why each answer is WRONG.

6. List the correct answer, and explain why it is right using support from the selection.

Step 1

Read ALL the question and ALL the answers. Put a check.

Step 2What is the question asking? Write a

sentence in your own words explaining what is being asked.

Example: Which of the following best describes what the Donkey and the Monkey were unhappy about?

Statement – The Donkey and the Monkey are not happy about

.

Step 3Consider each answer choice. Eliminate TWO

incorrect answers, if you can. Label them XX and ??.

A.What they had to eat (XX)B.How much work they had (??)C.Where they livedD.How they looked

Step 4Reread the two that are left, and look back in

the selection to choose the correct (or best) answer.

C.Where they livedD.How they looked

Step 5List each answer choice that is incorrect

(yes, all 3) and explain why each answer is WRONG.

A.What they had to eat (XX)The selection does not tell about what the animals ate or were eating.

B.How much work they had (??)Again, the selection does not mention what type of work the animals did or had to do.

C.Where they livedIn the selection, only the mole mentions where he lives. The reader does not know where the donkey or the monkey live.

Step 6List the correct answer, and explain why it is

right using support from the selection.

D.“How they looked” is the correct answer because in the selection the donkey tells that he’d rather have horns than his long ears, the monkey would rather have a tail like a fox instead of the one he has, and finally, the mole points out that he has no horns, no tail, is nearly blind, and lives in the dark underground. These statements show how dissatisfied the animals are with their looks.
