WELCOME TO THE 36th DELORAINE BORDER FESTIVAL!

Who would have thought, when the festival began, that in the year 2016 it would still be a vibrant force for the

promotion and showcasing of artistic endeavours in Southwest Manitoba!

A hearty “thank you” to those who provided the foresight and determination to see the idea through 36 years ago, and

to those who have been organizing and participating ever since!

RULES AND REGULATIONS (Visit Website for more details) All rules in the Provincial Syllabus apply unless modified or expanded by a local rule. Non-competitive participants receive adjudication but no mark. For competitive classes marks will be written on the adjudication sheet. For music entries (piano, vocal, choral) Photocopies are permitted only with the publisher's consent and proof of such presented to committee in advance of session. For Speech Arts, AMAF has been able to purchase a licence which allows photocopies.

ELIGIBILITY FOR SOLO AWARDS/TROPHIES/SCHOLARSHIPS (Website has more information) Speech Arts and Vocal Classes – TWO SELECTIONS, one of which must be a PIECE from the REPERTOIRE/RESOURCE LIST, must be performed competitively and a mark of 80% must be attained. (Exception: vocal ages 6 and under. See below.) Vocal ages 6 and under: As there are no pieces listed on the repertoire/Resource lists, participants may be eligible for awards if they enter two own choice solo selections competitively and attain a mark of 80%. Piano Classes - TWO SELECTIONS, one of which must be from a class listed as on the Piano Addendum, must be performed competitively and a mark of 80% attained. (These are equivalent to the former “test piece” classes.) Adult entries are welcome. They will be listed separately in the program so that adults and children/youth are not competing against each other. Copies of selections for the adjudicator: Music participants (piano, vocal, choral) and Speech Arts participants must supply copies from their respective Repertoire/Resource Lists and Own Choice selections for the adjudicator. The Deloraine Border Festival, may, at its discretion, create a class in any discipline where an entry warrants. The Deloraine Border Festival may, at its discretion, cancel a class where enough entries are not received to justify the hiring of an adjudicator.

ALL AWARDS/SCHOLARSHIP/TROPHY RECIPIENTS ARE CHOSEN BY THE ADJUDICATORS

All performers, if called upon, should be prepared to perform at the Festival Awards Concert.

Complaints/Concerns Do not approach the adjudicator. A written complaint or concern should be forwarded to the festival secretary.

Association board for two 3-year terms, and is presently a member of the Manitoba Registered Music

Josée Vaillancourt has studied piano since the age of 7, through the Ecole de musique Vincent d'Indy, in Montréal (Québec). She finished her third cycle (troisième cycle) advance theory course at the Conservatoire de musique de Hull (Québec). Then she graduated from the université de Montréal with a B. Mus. in musicology and ethnomusicology (histoire et langue musicale). She afterward received 2 more college diplomas : Performing Arts Management Diploma (Thunder Bay, Ontario) and Certificat de traduction (université de Saint-Boniface (Manitoba). She finally obtained a B. Ed. Degree (music - high school band instruments and French) from the University of Manitoba and has taught music with the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine in an elementary school for one year. During that year of exploration, she realized that private piano & theory teaching was really what she loves to do most. She is a trained Suzuki piano teacher : up to book 4 included. She has her Level II Orff training as well. She was on the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers' Association-Winnipeg Branch for 7 years. All through that time until now, she has been teaching piano and musical theory for over 30 years and has been an accompanist to many students from time to time. In parallel with her piano teaching career, she also lead another career as a classically trained versatile singer and as a stage actress as well. Josée has studied voice in masterclasses with Nancy Argenta, Daniel Taylor, Ingrid Attrot, Benjamin Butterfield, Julianne Baird, and Anne Azéma. She was coached by Robert Holliston, Laurence Cummings, Sarah Cunningham, Christa Patton, Susan Hellauer, Geoffrey Williams, and Margriet Tindemans. She continues to study with Phyllis Thompson in Winnipeg. Josee is a lyrical soprano with a wide vocal range, pure sound, good tone, and full resonance. She specializes in early music and contemporary 20th-21st century chamber music. One of her recorded medieval monodies was nominated for a 2013 Independant Music Awards (IMAs) in the vocal a cappella category. Franco-Manitoban composer, Guy Michaud, composed for her a cycle of 3 art songs which will be recorded in the future. She was chosen to represent the classical genre at the launch concerts of the Manitoba Museum's Manitoba Music Experience exhibition in 2009. As a member of her trio, Damsel & Swains, she has performed at various venues throughout Winnipeg and at the 2012 Cooks Creek Medieval Festival (Manitoba). Damsel & Swains has produced and performed an original premiered play in the 2013 edition of the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival. This marked her debut as a professional stage actress. This production is going on tour in the Fall of 2014 as part of the Home Route Classical concert series throughout Manitoba and Saskatchewan. She was a member of Canzona, Winnipeg's professional Baroque Chamber Choir. Her efforts have received recognition from her peers through the Manitoba Arts Council (2011), the Canada Arts Council (2011), and Manitoba Film & Music (2009). To pass the time, she loves to dance and make merry renaissance style.

Loretta Thorleifson attained a B. Ed. with a double major in Music and English at the University of Manitoba, and has been privileged to be working with students of all ages ever since. She was fortunate to study English under renowned educators such as Adolescent Literature specialist, Dave Jenkinson, Shakespeare expert Robert Emmett Finnegan, and the late great Canadian author, Robert Kroetsch.

She has taught English and choral music extensively at the Junior High and High School Levels, and has “entered and mentored” many student and speech choirs in festivals over the years. It has been rewarding for her to watch former students go on to create virtual theatre dynasties in their communities! Her choral experience has spanned everything from directing a blind children’s choir in Botswana, to a vocal jazz ensemble on Parliament Hill. She directed the choral program at Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler for many years, where she grew the program to five performing groups, and was the founding director of the “Inversions”.

Loretta has enjoyed acting as a guest conductor or adjudicator at numerous events and festivals throughout Manitoba, and was pleased to have conducted the Intermediate Provincial Honour Choir several years ago. She has worked with the Pembina Valley Music Festival for many years, and was pleased to work towards re-introducing Speech Arts to the local festival several years ago.

Loretta has studied voice with Henriette Schellenberg of Winnipeg, and continues to enjoy singing in choirs herself, including the Mennonite Festival Chorus which regularly performs together with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. She also pursues her passion of building choral community by serving as past-president of the Manitoba Choral Association. She and her husband Al perform with a Celtic/folk quartet called On the Edge and their two children have both enjoyed pursuing performance related studies at university.
