Standardconstructionsofdevelopmenttypicallyemphasizeeconomicgrowthandmodernprogressaspathstohumanwelfare.Resonatingwiththesegrowth-orientedapproachestoeconomicdevelopment,hegemonicperspectivesofhumandevelopmenthavearticulatedgrowth-orientedapproachesthatpromoteself-exploration,self-expansion,andthepursuitofpersonalfulfillment.Informedbycross-culturalresearchonrelationality,myworktakesdecolonialcritiquesofgrowthideologyindevelopmentstudiesandextendsthemtogrowth-orientedwaysofthinkingandbeing(ordevelopmentality)thatinformthestudyandpracticeofhumandevelopment.Fromthisperspective,thewidespreadadoptionofgrowth-orienteddevelopmentalityasglobalstandarddoesnotreflectthenaturalsuperiorityofthismodel;instead,itreflectsthebasisofscientificimaginationinneoliberalmodelsof“modern”selfhoodthatareanenduringproductofcolonialviolence.Likewise,thewidespreadadoptionofgrowth-orienteddevelopmentalityinhealthandwelfarepolicyregimesisnotpoliticallyneutral;instead,itreproducesdominationbylegitimizingpursuitofnarrowindividualfulfillmentattheexpenseofsustainablewell-beingforbroaderhumanity.Thedecolonialpotentialofcross-culturalresearchistoprovideanepistemicfoundationfromwhichtointerrogateimplicationsofgrowthideologyforhumandevelopmentandtoilluminatesustainablemodelsofbeingasabaseforpublichealthandsocialwelfarepolicy.

Sexdifferencesinrangesizeandnavigationarewidelyreported,withmalestravelingfartherthanfemales,beinglessspatiallyanxious,and,inmanystudies,navigatingmoreeffectively.Wewanttoknowwhymalesrangefarther,andwhatthismighttellusaboutsexdifferencesinwayfindingandspatialconfidence.Proposedevolutionaryexplanationshavesuggestedthatmalesgainmatingbenefitsfromlargerangeswhilefemalesincurgreaterfitnesscostsfromsuchtravelduetoparentingconstraints,andthatspatialabilitiesandstrategiesreflectsthesedifferences.Wefindsomesupportforthesehypotheses,butcross-culturaldatafromtheTsimane,Twe,Maya,andFaroeIslandssuggeststhattheirimportancevarieswithbothmatingpatternsandhabitat.OurworkinUtahalsoindicatesthatsexdifferencesinriskpreferencemediatethesexdifferenceinmobility,whichinturnaffectsnavigationalstyleandconfidence.

Musicisoftendescribedasuniversalanduniquelyhuman,yetmusicalstructuresandbehaviorsexhibittremendousculturaldiversityandvariability.Asisthatcaseforlanguage,thisdiversityposesachallengetohumaninfantsandchildren,whomustacquireknowledgeandskillsthatarespecifictotheirlocalsocioculturalenvironmentwithoutinstructionandwithinarelativelyshortwindowoftime.Rhythmisacurrentlyatopicofgreatinterest,givenitsroleinsomeofthemostubiquitousandsociallysignificantmusicalbehaviorssuchasdancingandgroupmusicmaking,andalsobecauseofitsrelevanceforlanguageprocessing.InthistalkIwillreviewevidenceforconstraintsonmusicalrhythmabilities,suchascapacitiesobservedacrossculturesorthatemergeveryearlyinchilddevelopment.Iwillalsoreviewrecentandmountingresearchdemonstratingstrikingcross-culturaldifferencesinrhythmperceptionandproductionamongadults.Iwillhighlightrecentfindingsfromourlabandotherssuggestingthatbehaviorssuchasdancingtomusicinvolveahostofcognitiveandperceptualabilitiesthatappeartodevelopquitegraduallyoverthecourseofchildhood.Iwilldiscusstheimportanceofconsideringchildhoodacquisitionandenculturationprocessesinscientificaccountsofhumanmusicality.

IntensivesocialscienceresearchworkhasbeencarriedoutamongtheKalahariSanofsouthernAfricasince1950.DetailedanthropologicalandinterdisciplinaryinformationhasbeenobtainedontheSansocialorganization,demography,subsistence,mobilityandsettlementpatterns,landuse,nutrition,sharingandreciprocity,andbeliefsystems,aswellasontheimpactsofsocial,economic,environmental,andpoliticalchange.Developmentandhumanrights-relatedworkbeganamongtheSaninBotswanainthemid-1970s,inNamibiaintheearly1980s,inSouthAfricainthe1990s,andinZimbabwein2010.ThisworkdrewheavilyonthefindingsofthevariousresearcherswhohadworkedinsouthernAfrica.Issuesaddressedincludedrightstoland,naturalresourcesincludingwildanimals,plants,andwater,intellectualandculturalproperty,aswellastherighttodevelopment,politicalparticipation,healthandtherighttoFree,Prior,andinformedConsent(FPIC)concerningprojectsandinitiativesthatmayaffectindigenouspeople.Thediscussionwillfocusonhowsocialandnaturalsciencedatawereappliedtoindigenouspeople’srightsissuesinsouthernAfrica,drawingonexamplesfromfivecountries:Botswana,Lesotho,Namibia,SouthAfrica,andZimbabwe.Aneffortismadetoshowhowimportantcross-culturalanddiachronicdataareinthedevelopmentofargumentsforhumanrightsorientedpoliciesandprograms.

Thegoalofthispaperistoreviewandcombinetwo,oftencontradictory,bodiesofresearch.Theseincluderecentlabresearchwithwesternpreschoolersonthetopicofpro-sociality—helpingbehavior,inparticular.Thesecondareaofresearchconsistsofethnographicmaterialdocumentingchildrenashelpers.Thetwostreamsofresearchareremarkablycomplementaryandwillbethebasisforaclaimthat,ifgiventhechance,allchildrenfromtoddlerhoodvolunteertheirassistancetoothers,especiallythosewho’reworking.Furthermore,drawinglargelyonethnographiccases,Iwillputforthasetofargumentsthatidentifythefitnessbenefitstothechildaswellastokinwho’relikelythebeneficiariesofthechild’shelpingbehavior.Lastly,Iwillarguethatbyaroundfivetosix,childrenloseseveraloftheattributesthatidentifythemas“helpers”astheybecome“workers”—hencedelimitingthehelperstage.

ConversationHour:ComingOutinCommunitiesofColor:ChallengesandOpportunitiesChairs:GregoryCanillasandJenniferMetzThursday,February22,20183:15PM–4:45PMTheconversationhourseekstoexploreissuesrelatedtocomingoutincommunitiesofcolor.LGBTQofcoloroftenhavedifficultycomingoutbecausetheyremainnegativelyaffectedbycommunityandculturalstandards,aswellasgeneralsocietalstereotypesofLGBTQindividuals.Forthosepersonsraisedinreligiousfamilies,comingoutmayoffermorechallenges,includingreconcilingsexualorientationwithreligious/spiritualbeliefs.Forthisreason,manyLGBTofcolorfinditeasiertoremaincloseted.LGBTQindividualsremainatgreaterriskforsuicideattempts,depressivedisorders,substanceabuseandHIV/STDs.Theyaremorethaneighttimesaslikelytoattemptsuicide;sixtimesaslikelytoreporthighlevelsofclinicaldepression;threetimesaslikelytouseillicit/illegaldrugs;andthreetimesaslikelytobeathighriskforsexuallytransmitteddiseasesandHIV.Theconversationhourwillbeginbybrieflyreviewingcurrentliteratureonthecomingoutprocessincommunitiesofcolor.Facilitatorswillbrieflyhighlightidentitymodelsrelatedtocomingout,riskandprotectivefactors,andtheimpactofreligion,cultureandcommunitytothisprocess.Facilitatorswillbrieflyhighlightonedenomination’sstrugglewithLGBTQinclusionandhighlightpossiblestrategiestohelpLGBTQofcolortodevelopamorehealthy,integratedLGBTQidentity.Presenterswillhighlightopportunitiesandchallengesexperiencedandwillprovidepromptstofacilitateinformaldiscussionwithcolleaguesabouttheseopportunitiesandchallenges.NOTE:Thisconversationhourwillbeapproximatelyonehourinlengthanddoesnotrequirepre-registrationtoattend.ConversationHour:ExploringExtension:Non-TraditionalCareersinAcademiaChairs:CarMunKok,DeepaSrivastava,andMariadeGuzmanFriday,February23,201810:15AM–11:45AMCooperativeExtensionhasbeenaroundforovera100yearsbutisstilloftentimescalled“thebestkeptsecret.”TheCooperativeExtensionSystem(CES)servestotranslateresearchintopracticalandactionableknowledgetocommunitiestoimprovethelivesofpeople.Theintegrationofresearch,extensionandoutreach,anduniversityandpublicserviceisvitaltothissystem.CESisrepresentedinallland-grantuniversitiesaroundthecountryandisaviablebutoftenlittleknowncareerpath.Infact,therearenumeroustenure-andnon-tenureacademicpositionsatuniversitiesandcountyofficesthatareavailableforthosewhoareinterestedinpursuingcareersinappliedresearch.Inthisconversationhour,wewillprovideanoverviewofthehistoryandpurposeofCooperativeExtension,sharethedifferentmodelsofExtensionwithindifferentuniversitysystems,andexplorethedifferentacademicjobswithinCooperativeExtension.NOTE:Thisconversationhourwillbeapproximatelyonehourinlengthanddoesnotrequirepre-registrationtoattend.
