Dear People of St. Anthony, St. Mary and Holy Family Parish:
“The father ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20)
“Know your faith. Live your faith. And keep relationships open.” These were Deacon Tom’s guidance on how to be Ambassadors of God’s Mercy. Regarding the last part he told several stories about difficult people in his life whom he continued to desire their good (loved them) only to discover years later that God had worked powerfully through him in their lives. He had not closed the door on them. He kept the relationship open. And though it may have taken years, God’s mercy touched and healed them. Let us all be the father in today’s Gospel instead of the older brother. Let us never close off a relationship we feel we can not reach and prevent God from reaching them.
It was a wonderful Mission. Deacon Tom held our full attention for an hour and a half three nights in a row! Clear theology, rich human experience, and dynamic presentation…. were a few of the gifts he brought to us. It is up now to us to put it into practice. For those who missed the Mission or want to review it, DVD’s will be available for $10 soon. Just call the office and let us know you would like one.
We have only two greater gifts to give our children than the Sacrament of Mercy, Reconciliation. (Those greater gifts would be Baptism and Eucharist). This Saturday morning we celebrated First Reconciliation with the St. Mary’s and Holy Family second graders. Next Saturday we will celebrate with St. Anthony’s. Again I thank all parents and grandparents who have kept the promise you made at your son or daughter’s baptism to raise them with the gift of faith. Are we not, by sharing this Sacrament with them, saving them from the fate of the prodigal son?
It is not only for children of course. I encourage all to take advantage of the Sacrament of Mercy. Today (Sunday) there is a Communal Reconciliation Service at St. Bernard’s in Abbotsford at 7:00pm. Next week-end there will be services at 3:30pm at St. Mary’s in Neillsville and 7:00pm at St. Anthony’s in Loyal. We cannot share God’s Mercy with others unless we have experienced it ourselves.
In the past two weeks our Corporal Work of Mercy toward our sister parish in Kenya has taken clearer form. Six of us will be travelling to the village of Saikeri about an hour west of Nairobi, June 30 through July 10. Things can change but the group working hard to be on that trip are Megan Melcher, Aarica Humke, Alan and Pat Billings and myself. There is a sixth who just came forward and is learning the details of the trip this afternoon before deciding. My original vision was to invite one man from each of the three parishes to come. I asked people who I thought would bring needed skills and experience on the trip. I asked two men from Holy Family but got no yeses. I asked two men from St. Mary’s and got no yeses. I asked one man from St. Anthony’s and got an immediate yes! (Alan) Then we had two young women ask to come on the trip (Megan and Aarica). Rethinking my (chauvinistic) vision I saw the value in young people and women coming in terms of helping with future trips. To avoid even the least concern about impropriety, we then asked Alan’s wife Pat to come as well. As soon as our sixth possibility confirms, we’ll announce his name as well.
Please mark your calendar now for Saturday evening June 4th! Plan on coming to the Parkway Pines for specially prepared food and entertainment all to raise funds to help Aarica and Megan go on this trip. (The rest are paying their own way.) As soon as we get the details together we’ll get the word out.
After First Reconciliation next Saturday I will be heading to Black River Falls for the Alpha Retreat. A two day retreat is part of the Alpha process. Deacon Tom Kinnick said that Alpha, and in particular the retreat, has transformed their parish and their pastor! You too will have a chance to work on new relationships, as I will leave our new Fr. Joe, from India, in charge for the weekend. He will preside and preach at all four Masses.
Ambassadors of God’s Mercy, keeping relationships open with our own families, with new people in Kenya, with a priest from India…. we have begun our Mission!
Fr. Steve
