Open Discussion- Flings
Zimbra for Android Phones- much better than Touchdown.
Boomerang- Quickly access servers
New VDSPowerCli- manage distributed switches with PowerCLI
vCMA- manage vSphere from a tablet. Great for meetings and showing performance data to
application developers.
Thinapped vSphere Client
14
Open Discussion- View Outlook TweakThe Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 policy settings in the Group Policy Object Editor do not include the Outlook Anywhere settings. We need to update the template which will allow us to set the ‘No Flags’ option so Outlook Anywhere is disabled, then the settings can be pushed via GPO to Computers in the domain.
You cannot use Group Policy settings to configure Outlook Anywhere (RPC/HTTP) settings
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961112
After installing the template set the ‘RPC/HTTP Connection Flags’ to ‘No Flags’
This will disable Outlook Anywhere for the Computers specified in the GPO Policy.
15
Open Discussion- Help! I manually deleted a VM from View!
Don’t do this! It causes the View database to become inconsistent.
If you did, see “Manually deleting linked clones or stale virtual desktop entries from VMware View Manager” KB 1008658
SviConfig -operation=RemoveSviClone -VmName=VM name -AdminUser=the local admin user -AdminPassword= the local admin password -ServerUrl=the View Composer server URL
16
Open Discussion- Remove “Safely Remove Hardware” Icon
The “Safely Remove Hardware” widget in the system tray could possibly cause problems. You can now remove it in Version 7 VMs. To remove it:
Edit Settings, click Options tab at top, click on General, then click the Configuration Parameters button. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the
list and click Add Row. Type "devices.hotplug" without the quotations, and in the next field type "FALSE" without quotations. Power on VM and the
"Safely Remove Hardware" icon will not appear.

Open Discussion- R2 PerformanceQ: My performance is slow on Windows 2008 R2 Servers.
A: The most effective solution is to update to ESX 4.0 Update 1, which provides a new WDDM driver that is installed with VMware Tools and is fully supported. After a VMware Tools upgrade, you can find it in C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\Drivers\wddm_video.
KB Article: 1011709
Did you try to install the WDDM driver or to just disable the SVGA driver? Typically I have had customers install the WDDM driver and increase the video RAM to 32MB, to see a better improvement in video response on 2008 R2 machines.
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1011709&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=43856896&stateId=0%200%2043008426
Note: By default Windows 2008 uses the SVGA driver so you must manually configure the WDDM driver using the path above.
If you cannot update to ESX 4.0 Update 1, deselect the driver included with ESX 4.0. When you install VMware Tools, select Custom or Modify in the VMware Tools installation wizard, then deselect the SVGA (XPDM) driver.
Alternatively, remove the SVGA driver from the Device Manager after installing VMware Tools.

Open Discussion- R2 Profile Copy
Copy Administrator Settings to Public User “How to customize the default local user profile when you prepare an image of Windows XP or Windows Server 2003”
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/959753
In 2008 R2, Microsoft removed the “Copy To” feature for user profiles. It now needs to be done using an unattend.xml file, see “How to customize the default local user profile when you prepare an image of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2”
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973289
An Example XML File for Server 2008 R2:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend">
<settings pass="specialize">
<component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
<RegisteredOrganization>Your Organization Name</RegisteredOrganization>
<RegisteredOwner>Your Registered Owner</RegisteredOwner>
<CopyProfile>true</CopyProfile>
</component>
</settings>
<cpi:offlineImage cpi:source="wim:f:/sources/install.wim#Windows Server 2008 R2 SERVERSTANDARD" xmlns:cpi="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:cpi" />
</unattend>
Execute Sysprep
C:\windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe /generalize /unattend:unattend.xml

Open Discussion- Getting Started with Automation
Recipe for success
Excel and the Concatenate command can help you build PowerShell scripts.

Open Discussion- Automation with Orchestrator
Orchestrator is VMware’s best kept secret. It is a tool for automating vSphere- you probably already have it
installed and didn’t know it!
