FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK... Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Church, Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, and the birthday of the Church. On the day of Pentecost we contemplate the ways in which the Holy Spirit inspires us and transforms our lives. On the day of Pentecost, the Apostles were gathered together in Jerusalem. When the Holy Spirit came down upon them, they immediately went forth to proclaim the Good News. Jerusalem was city alive with people from many countries and places - some merchants and traders, others who came to worship in the temple. When they heard the Apostles preach on that day, each understood the preaching in his or her own language. An important teaching that can be drawn from the story of Pentecost is that the Good News of the death and resurrection is a universal message, meant to be proclaimed to all people. The Word of God, the message of eternal life, must be preached to people of all nations and races. Let us ask God for the gifts we need to spread the Good News by word and example at home, at work, in our community and beyond!

33 DAYS TO MORNING GLORY What better way to Welcome Our Lady of Guadalupe

to St. Francis de Sales than a Marian Consecration? Meeting dates: June 21, 28 & July 5, 12

Judith Room Time: 1:30-3 p.m. -- Consecration date --July 16 Feast of Our Lady of

Mt. Carmel-- From Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, author of the bestselling book Consoling the Heart of Jesus, comes an extraordinary 33-day journey to Marian consecration with four giants of Marian spirituality: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, and Blessed John Paul II. Fr. Michael masterfully summarizes their teaching, making it easy to grasp and simple enough to put into practice. More specifically, he weaves their thought into a user-friendly, do-it-yourself retreat that will bless even the busiest of people. So, if you've been thinking about entrusting yourself to Mary for the first time or if you're simply looking to deepen and renew your devotion to her, 33 Days to Morning Glory is the right book to read and the perfect retreat to make. FAITH WITH A FACE—DARYL BRAUN Daryl has quietly been steering the administrative side of St. Francis de Sales parish for 20 years! Joining the parish with his wife Geri in December of 1996, he was asked by Father Dave Braun to Co-Chair the Finance committee right off the bat in 1997. He has also been the Treasurer Trustee on and off since 2002 (often stepping up when someone could not serve), and, after taking a break from 2006 to 2012, he is currently serving our parish in that capacity. Daryl has been the catalyst for setting up many systems within our parish to create more efficient accounting, including Quick Books and Excel. He has conducted stewardship surveys and extracts information from the parish database for mailings and other studies. He created a system for invoicing tuitions. He was a tremendous help in establishing our Parish email database. He works with the finance committee on the parish budget and watches carefully for trends or issues. He works carefully with our office manager on all types of data entering and analysis. Most recently he served on the Project 2017 committee and is a consultant in the School Choice program.

Daryl has a degree in electrical engineering from Marquette University, but his career took him down the business management path. What you might not know is that Daryl is also a very talented woodworker, and has donated this “talent” to SFDS as well. His projects include the cabinet in the sacristy, the corner table in the conference room, the window in the confessional door, the sink area in the sacristy, the sacrarium, and more. His most recent creation was to modify the Hymn board (that he originally built in 2006) with a drawer at the bottom to hold all of the number cards---genius!

Thank you Daryl for all that you do for our parish! We so appreciate all of your hard work in keeping St. Francis de Sales technologically up to date and for all of your beautiful woodwork donations. Most of all, we appreciate your steady support---always with a smile!

“BEFORE” & “AFTER” MAKEOVER PICS OF A 125 YEAR OLD! There has been so much positive feedback on our newly renovated church! Over and over we have heard that you love the new acoustics, that you’re happy with the quieter and more comfortable kneelers, that you’re amazed with the artistry of the stations, that you’re glad that some of the black marble was re-purposed. You love that the organ has a beautiful sound, that people are using the new handicapped chairs, that you weren’t sure about the new font but now you think it’s great, that you like the clean and bright look of the paint and the tile floor. Many of you have said that you never noticed the clerestory windows before or the incredible beauty of our historical stained glass windows. Many of you have said that it’s a heavenly and meditative place to pray. It’s a wonderful thing!

When you look at the “before” and “after” photos of the church looking toward the sanctuary, there are a few things that we’d like point out for you to examine and see. Both of these photos were taken from the loft during a 9 a.m. Sunday Mass. One of the comments that we’re hearing a lot is that the church “seems bigger”. You can see in these photos that the new decorative paint and stenciling help to fill the vertical space and bring your eye up, expanding the visual area. The new music area faces the choir toward the congregation (rather than to the side) to encourage better sound and participation. The organ is now down in the front of the church so that it can be accessed easily in addition to our beautiful piano, creating the opportunity for a variety of music. The altar and the side altars are the same actual pieces of furniture (and same size) but have been covered in wood. The old speakers (the square one over the altar and the holes in the alcoves) that were obsolete were removed and patched. The old carpeting absorbed the sound while the new tile floor creates more “live” acoustics. The frames added to our stations really highlight Christ’s journey to the cross. The reredos behind the altar was actually re-purposed and had some decorative wood pieces added to it to create more volume. The new stained glass window over the altar dramatically brings in more light and focus. Mary and Joseph are our same statues, only painted to bring out their beauty. You might have observed that Mary has been moved back to the east side of the church. This is traditionally where she belongs with the other “ladies”...notice that all of the saints in the stained glass windows on that side are women, where on the “Joseph” side they are all male saints. There is so much to see and to learn about in our historical church. While our parish was founded 175 years ago, this actual church building was built in 1892 which means that it turns 125 years old this summer! In honor of this unique time in history, some special celebrations have been planned for Sunday, Aug. 6. There will be a 3 p.m. rededication Mass by the Archbishop. It promises to be a beautiful liturgy with some of our former pastors coming back to concelebrate, and music with our choirs joining to sing together. This will be followed by a gala dinner at Geneva National, with cocktails at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $60 per person and are on sale now after Mass or in the parish office. Please join in on this very special occasion in the history of our parish!
