CLASS PLACEMENTS

Teachers and Administration met in late spring to create classes for this school year. Please be aware that a great deal of time and thought went into this process. Many

factors were considered such as: viable instructional groups, maturity and work habits, matching of learning or teaching style, ratio of boys to girls and ESL and Special Education Support. The importance of any one of these factors varies from student to student. Each individual student‟s progress and placement have been carefully considered. Please remember that current student class placements are tentative and could change during re-organization in order for us to align with the Ontario Ministry of Education‟s primary and junior limits on class sizes.

This year, we have seen an increased number of combined grade classes across the school. Please be reassured that the students in a combined class are not repeating curriculum, and will be responsible for learning the same material as their peers in a single-grade setting. In order to comply with Ministry class-size guidelines, most schools run successful combined grade classrooms, and most Ontario students experience one during their school career. Your understanding is much appreciated! Please call 905 – 277 -0281 and ask for Ms. McNeely if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child‟s placement.

ALLERGIES At Fairview, we have a number of students who are severely allergic to nuts, peanuts, nut products and several other food groups. We also have students

who are severely allergic to bee or wasp stings. Please ensure that your child's teacher and the office staff are made aware of their condition. If your child requires medication, please obtain a medical form from the office which will need to be completed by your family doctor. Students with EPI Pens at Fairview are required to wear them in waist-packs at all time while on school property. Forms must be updated every year. We would also like to remind you to ensure that the medication you provide the school is current and will not expire within the school year (if it will please make a note so that you may be able to refresh it as needed). Fairview is a nut-safe school. Students are not to bring any nut products and in particular, peanut butter and nutella) to school.

SETTLEMENT WORKER

The Multicultural, Settlement and Education Partnership helps newcomer parents and students successfully

integrate into their school and community. MSEP provides settlement services to newcomer families from Fairview. Fairview is very luckyto have Ms. Julie Lee as our Settlement Worker.

She can be reached at (905) 609-4119.

RECOGNIZING BIRTHDAYS

Rather than sending treats such as cake or donuts, please consider sending in small things for the students in the class; fancy pencils, stickers or erasers are always fun to get. We recognize

all of our students with birthday wishes at our monthly assemblies. By asking that food not be sent in, we are helping to create a safe environment for all of our students especially for those with food allergies. Unfortunately, food brought in by parents or students will not be distributed. Please call 905-277-0281 and speak to Mrs. Hatton (Vice-Principal) or Ms. McNeely (Principal) if you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy. Thank you for considering “loot bags” instead of edible treats for the class.

BUSSING AT FAIRVIEW Bussing is provided for students who live more than the following

distances by road, path or walkway from the school.

Kindergarten – Gr.1 1.0 km Grades 2-4 1.6 km Grade 5+ 2.0 km If Courtesy Bus seats become available, application forms will be made available in the main office early in October. Below are two ways that parents can directly access bus information throughout the year: Geoquery Website - http://businfo.stopr.ca This website allows parents to login and find their child‟s transportation information by following these instructions:

type in the website address

click “student login”

enter your child‟s OEN number (at the

top of your Ontario Report Card),

street/house number, school and grade

click “login”

SAFE ARRIVAL

Parents, please help us to keep your children safe by following our school safety rules and discussing them with your family:

Parents who use the Kiss „N‟ Ride in the mornings, please do not arrive until 8:45 a.m. as there is no teacher supervision until that time. When using the Kiss and Ride, please remember to stay in your car, put it in Park, and wait for a staff member in an orange vest to assist your child in exiting the car on the passenger side only

It's great to see so many families walk to and from school each day. Please remember to stay on sidewalks and follow instructions from the crossing guards at the crosswalks

Remember to wait to enter the crosswalk until the crossing guard is at the centre of the crosswalk and has ensured that all traffic has stopped. They will then signal for you to cross

Use of the path on private property at the back of the school is at your own risk. It may be unsafe, as it is not supervised and will not receive any type of maintenance

Staff supervise the schoolyard from 3:20 – 3:35 p.m. Any students who have not been picked up at that time will be escorted to the office, to call home (and will meet their parent/care-giver there)

AGENDAS AND SCHOOL FORMS

As a school, we provide a number of optional materials and activities for students. One of these materials is our “Agenda”. The agenda supports students in

developing their organizational skills and it is also an effective communication tool between parents and teachers.

Page 4: WELCOME TO THE FIRST SCHOOL HOURS DAY OF …schools.peelschools.org/1360/Lists/SchoolNewsLetters/sept... · Door 12 (by the Parking Lot): Grades 4 & 5 (Barr, Washbrook, Huk, ... matching

We will have agenda that can be purchased for $7.00, and we ask for exact change or a cheque made out to Fairview Public School. Should you not wish to purchase an agenda, your child will be provided with a plain notebook which he/she will be able to use as his/her agenda. Parents will be informed by letter as soon as agendas are available for purchase.

VOLUNTEERING AT FAIRVIEW

Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and in the success of the school

community. At Fairview, we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and community members, and are grateful for the many hours our volunteers contribute throughout the school year. To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A police background check is required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to accompany your child on a field trip, you should complete this background check. Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a school volunteer. All returning volunteers will be mailed an Offence Declaration Form that must be filled out and returned to the board office each year. You will not be able to volunteer with the Peel board until you have returned this form If you have any questions about criminal record checks or the offence declaration form, please call the board office at 905-890-1010 ext. 2488.

STUDENT INSURANCE

The Peel District School Board does not provide accident insurance coverage for student injuries that occur on school property or during

school activities including extracurricular sports. Each year, many of our families spend thousands of dollars when their children are injured at school, on field trips, while participating in non-school activities, or at home. If a student is injured, parent(s)/guardian(s) are responsible for any costs not covered by provincial health care or their employer‟s health plan. Please check with your provider regarding your coverage. The provincial health care system does not cover costs which are commonly related to accidents including dental work, ambulance fees, casts and crutches, and physiotherapy. All of these are covered by Old Republic‟s student

accident insurance plan. It is strongly recommended that all families consider this coverage, especially if your child participates in extracurricular activities. The annual plans provide 24 hours a day, 365 days a year coverage. The insurance agreement is between you and Old Republic Insurance Company. For more information call Old Republic Insurance Company toll free at 1-800-530-5446.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

Peel schools provide a safe environment for students and staff to learn and work. The board has many procedures to ensure

safety including

regular fire drills, evacuation plans, criminal record checks for new staff and

volunteers, and lockdown, hold and secure and shelter in place drills. Together with Peel Police, OPP and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board, the board developed procedures for critical situations including lockdowns, hold and secure, shelter in place and bomb threats in order to help keep schools safe during a potentially serious or violent incident. Every school will review the key points of the lockdown process with students. We rehearse the drill twice per year to make sure staff and students know what to do if we have to initiate a lockdown. During the rehearsal, the principal will make an announcement to "initiate lockdown procedure." The school bell will ring continuously for a period of time and our goal is to make the school appear vacated. Students and staff inside the school will:

go to the closest room, close the door and lock it, if possible

turn off the lights and lie down on the floor away from doors and windows

remain on the floor quietly until further directions are given

Students and staff outside the school will:

move as far away from the building as possible

remain outside until further directions are given

Depending on the situation, students and staff outside the building may be directed to an evacuation site. When the rehearsal is over, the principal will make another announcement. Students and staff must not use cell phones It is important to note that in these critical situations, safety is our number one priority. During rehearsals or in real critical situations, Peel Police have advised that cell phone usage can cause more safety risks and danger than benefits. We recognize that when an emergency occurs, students and staff may feel the need to communicate immediately with their families. However, increased cellular traffic in these critical situations can result in more dangers and the following consequences:

- Cause signal delays for emergency services to attend to the situation.

- Prevents police from being able to communicate with each other and other important personnel in a timely manner.

- Public posts and messages may identify where individuals are in the building and a pose a safety risk.

- Cell phones can create a safety hazard by attracting attention to the area of the school where the phone is being used.

Parents are requested to NOT call the school or your child’s cell phone during emergency procedures. How parents can get updates during emergency procedures There are a number of ways that parents can stay connected and get important, timely updates in the unlikely event of an actual lockdown, hold and secure, shelter in place or bomb threat. We will try to make every effort to keep parents informed using the methods listed below.

- Monitor your child‟s school website. - Get updates by following posts on the

Peel District School Board Twitter account (@Peelschools), www.twitter.com/peelschools

- Visit www.peelschools.org. All important updates are posted on the homepage under the What’s New section.

- Listen to local media

Parents are requested NOT to go to the school In the unlikely event of an actual lockdown, hold and secure, shelter in place or bomb threat, police ask that parents do not go to the school. For safety reasons, you will not be allowed to enter a school that is in lockdown, hold and secure or shelter in place and students and staff cannot leave the school. In some cases, police will designate a Parent Information Site for you to attend and get up-to-date, accurate information. Please monitor your child’s school website and do not come to the school unless requested to do so. If you have any questions about our lockdown drill, or any of the procedures we have in place to keep students and staff safe, please call the school.
