Ntshingila, Nompumelelo (DCur) Nompumelelo Ntshingila completed a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2004 as a general, psychiatric, community nurse and midwife. She then obtained her Master’s in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from the University of Johannesburg in 2013. She is married and has two children. She is currently employed as a Lecturer in Psychiatric Nursing at the University of Johannesburg. She has presented her work at both national and international conferences. She has published in accredited journals. A model was developed for psychiatric nurse practitioners to facilitate the mental health of women living with borderline personality disorder. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, contextual and theory-generating research design was used. The central concept ‘Facilitation of self-empowerment’ was identified. The model was developed and was presented to a panel of experts for evaluation. The model was implemented and evaluated in practice by means of a phenomenological approach for a period of three months. The central storyline that emerged during data analysis was that psychiatric nurse practitioners experienced the model as a secure backbone to guide the women living with borderline personality disorder in making a shift to facilitate their mental health. They had to adapt the model’s timeframe when working with women living with borderline personality disorder. Through this challenging involvement with working with women living with borderline personality disorder, the psychiatric nurse practitioners gained new therapeutic insights into themselves. The original contribution to mental health was the developed, implemented and evaluated model. Supervisor: Dr MA Temane Co-supervisor: Prof M Poggenpoel Co-supervisor: Prof CPH Myburgh

Kubayi, Ntwanano Alliance (DPhil) Ntwanano Alliance Kubayi was born at Elim in 1989 and matriculated from Khomanani High School, Vhembe District of Limpopo province in 2007. Alliance obtained a National Diploma in Officiating and Coaching in 2010 and a BTech in 2011, both from Tshwane University of Technology; and an MPhil in Sport Science from the University of Johannesburg in 2016. Mr Kubayi has been working as a lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology since 2013. He has published 27 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented research papers at both national and international conferences; he also serves as a reviewer for two accredited journals. In 2014 and 2016, Alliance won the Young Researcher of the Year Award in the Faculty of Science at the Tshwane University of Technology. In his thesis titled, ‘Analysis of sport science perceptions and needs among South African coaches: evolving a strategic model for coach education’, his main findings were that injury prevention, recovery, conditioning, individual skill development, tactics/strategy, nutrition, mental training and sport technology were the most important needs of South African coaches. Based on his research outcomes, it showed that South African coaches wanted sport science research to be relevant and applicable, with sport scientists using non-technical language to disseminate their research findings and that coaches should collaborate with sport scientists. The necessity for peer education between coaches and sport scientists was highlighted. A conceptual model was developed, which was based on recommendations and practical applications following from this study. This South African hallmark study has added new knowledge to the field of science in coaching. Alliance has published one article from his thesis in an accredited journal and two more articles are under review. Supervisor: Prof Y Coopoo Co-supervisor: Prof AL Toriola

He then obtained a Diploma in Sports Coaching from Anglia Ruskin University, honours degrees in Human Movement Sciences and Psychology from the University of Pretoria, and a Master’s degree in Sport Science from the University of Johannesburg. Currently, he is the national Managing Director of Pretoria Martial Arts (PMA) Judo, and a Lecturer at the Department of Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Pretoria. He has competed and coached at World Championship level, and PMA Judo has captured more than 900 medals nationally and internationally since 2009. He has also served as the Chairperson of Tshwane Judo Association and University Judo South Africa. Petrus Louis Nolte conducted groundbreaking research by his comparative study of the elite sport systems of South Africa, England and the Netherlands. With his focus on judo, he critically interrogated sound governance against the background of globalised influences affecting professional sport. The research demonstrates how elite sport systems are informed and reciprocally react to socio-economic and political realities. The interplay of real-world contexts finds expression through the synthesis of the figurational sociology and system’s theory. Two internationally successful judo countries (the Netherlands and England) were thus selected for the comparative case study analysis with South Africa. The research found that successful elite judo systems had comprehensive policies and accountable structures that create an enabling environment by forming key strategic alliances and negotiate access to essential resources. In addition to key strategic insights, the Sports Policy Factors Leading to International Sporting Success – the SPLISS model – was also adapted to reflect the dynamics of power relations inherent in society and within the sport fraternity. This study adds to the knowledge within the field of sport development, specifically related to Judo in South Africa and benchmarked with the Netherlands and England.
