Welcome to the Lavelle Prep Elementary family! We are excited to begin this school year with you and your child. Elementary school is a time of great growth both academically and socially, and we can’t wait to get started! During the summer, it is important to make sure what was learned in Kindergarten is retained. Below is a list of First Grade Readiness Skills that your child should be familiar with from Kindergarten. If not, it would definitely be beneficial to spend some time each day working on a skill with your child so that they are ready for their big day in FIRST GRADE!! GETTING READY FOR FIRST GRADE Social Skills I can: Follow rules and routines of the classroom. Use materials responsibility. Work, play, and share with others. Respect the feelings of others. Seek an adult’s help when needed. Participate in class discussions and activities. Reading Skills: I can: Show independent interest in reading activities Listens with interest to stories read aloud. Retell a simple story. Recognize all the letters of the alphabet in order. Tell the difference between capital/lowercase letters. Associate letters and sounds. Recognize rhymes and rhyming patterns. Make predictions about illustrations. Identify words and construct meaning from picture clues in text. Identifies basic sight words. Identify the setting and character of a story Make connections to characters in a story. Begin to understand simple punctuation marks (period, question mark, etc.) Locate the title, author name, and illustrator name Sort words into categories (e.g., food, colors, shapes) Writing Skills: I can: Read and write my own name Tell a story using pictures Write familiar words. Copy or write words. Participate in group dictated stories. Build simple words and sentences. Write on a page from left to right. Use finger spacing in my sentences. Handle writing tools correctly. Language and Listening Skills: I Can: Understand and follow simple directions Listens to others for short periods of time without interrupting. Recite nursery rhymes, fingerplays and songs. Participate in discussions and conversations. Ask questions. Speak clearly to convey messages and requests. Distinguish between asking and telling. Distinguish between formal and informal language (with peers, at home vs. at school). Uses complete sentences. Compose oral stories. Retell a simple story with basic elements of beginning, middle and end. Math: I can: Name numbers 0 through 30. Writes numbers 0 through 20. Use counting skills to add to 10. Classify and compare objects. Shows interest in solving mathematical problems Solve problems by guessing and checking using manipulatives or fingers. Identify, label and create a variety of shapes. Shows an understanding of the calendar and time. Knows the days of the week and months of the year.

Welcome to the Lavelle Prep Elementary family! We are excited to begin this school year with you and your child. Elementary school is a time of great growth both academically and socially, and we can’t wait to get started!
