Welcome to the

Moravian Greyhound Family

We are so glad that you chose to come to Moravian

andWe wish you success and happiness in your years

as Moravian Hounds

At some point during your career at Moravian you will probably need to do

all of the following:

•Read material your professor has put on reserve

•Work on group library projects

•Write research papers

Working effectively in the library will be key to your

success as Moravian Hounds.

And helping you succeed is key to our mission as

librarians.

So meet Sherlock Hound,

Our Library Mascot, who will show you around Reeves and help you to

become library super sleuths

Sherlock Hound’s Three- Part Introduction to

Reeves• Part 1 What’s Where and Why It’s There

• Part 2 What’s Wrong Here?

• Part 3 You’re gonna love...

Part 1

What’s Where and Why It’s There

As you enter Reeves you’ll see

• The Circulation Desk on your left

• The Reference Desk on your right

Go to the Circulation Desk

• To borrow and return books• To pick up reserve material• To pick up interlibrary loan

material• To get change for the photocopiers

Go to the Reference Desk to find a friendly librarian

who will be there to answer your questions and

put you on the trail to quality information.

Straight ahead past the Circulation and Reference Desks is a flight of stairs

that goes to the upper and lower levels of the library.

On each side of the stairs is a bank of computers providing access to the

library catalog.

These are the computers on the left side.

(The card catalogs were taken out in 1989. Scotland Yard is still investigating)

• The inline

onlinecatalogs on the left side of the stairs are known as MOSYS for Moravian’s Online System.

These MOSYS catalogs are known as “dumb” terminals” because they can be

used only to search the collection in Reeves.

The terminals on the right side of the stairs will

allow you to search the Internet as well as the

Library collection.

You’ll need your user name and password to log on to all these Internet access terminals.

Then go to the library home page by clicking on the Internet Explorer icon.

Pick the first option on the page Reeves Library Catalog – MOSYS to search the book and periodical collection.

Select one of the five options at the top of the screen—Keyword Searches, Alphabetical Browse, General Search, Reserves, or Media

Search.

Choose the first option, Keyword Searches, if you want to do a simple search for a book by author, title, or

subject.

As I mentioned before, sooner or later you will

need to get material that your professor has put on

reserve. All items on reserve have been assigned a number.

Find the number of the item you need by

selecting the Reserves search on MOSYS and then

picking Reserves by Instructor.

Just type in your instructor’s name in the appropriate box. You’ll bring up a list of the material your professor has on reserve.

Notice the variety of call numbers assigned to books and

articles on Professor Johanson’s reserve list.

If you walk past the bank of online catalogs, you will

find yourself at the beginning of the

Reference Collection.

What will Reference sources do for you??

They will allow you to do all of the following:

• Quickly find specific information, such as a definition, statistics, a quote, the date of an event, etc.

• Get background information on a research topic

• Find a map, a travel guide, or a document, such as the U.S. Constitution

For your convenience the books in Reference are always

available because they don’t circulate. Books that circulate- novels, biographies, etc.-are

shelved in the stacks.

So what’s the difference between books in Reference and books in the stacks?

Suppose you are assigned a paper on Toni Morrison’s

novel, Beloved.

In the Reference Collection you’ll find a brief life of Morrison, a

short introduction to her work, and a summary of

Beloved.

In the stacks you will find studies of Morrison’s work.

A book in the stacks will offer a discussion of the

novel- theme, characters, setting, conflict, etc.

Incidentally, for this paper on Beloved, you would

also need journal articles for a fuller, more detailed investigation of the novel.

A journal article will provide a lengthy analysis of some specific aspect of

the novel, the ways in which setting creates conflict, for example.

Notice that as you do research, going from

books in Reference, to books in the stacks, to

journal articles, you progress from the general

to the specific.

To help you track down information on a subject,

we have done some detective work for you.

Two of our services will be especially useful.

So far, we’ve talked about using books in the

Reference Collection and in the stacks.

To find electronic sources,go to the library home

page.

Our library home page.

Think of the home page as a set of links to our goods

and services.

Among our goods, the one that you’ll use again and again is our Databases and Indexes to Periodical Articles, which will enable you to find articles on any

topic.

For that paper on Morrison’s Beloved, click on RESOURCES BY SUBJECT and then on Literature for high-quality sources on this

topic. .

If you need good Web sites as well, click on SELECTED INTERNET SITES to locate the

best ones on Morrison

To sum up:Think of the library home

page as your gateway to the goods and services that we make available to you and

that you will want in order to get the highest-quality

sources on a research topic.

That completes our tour of the main level of Reeves.

Journals, magazines, and newspapers are called

periodicals. Our periodicals collection is on the lower

level of the library.

At the foot of the stairs you can go left or right.

• On the left is the bound periodicals room.

• On the right is the periodicals reading room.

In the bound periodicals room you’ll find all issues of our periodicals prior to

the current year.

They’ve been bound in hard covers to protect them and make them

easier to store. Hence the name bound periodicals.

They are arranged alphabetically.

The periodical reading room on the right has all issues of our periodicals for the current year. They are arranged alphabetically on shelves that wrap around the room.

The newspapers we subscribe to are also in

this room.

There’s a help desk staffed by students who have been trained to assist you.

While most of our periodicals are in paper, some are on microfilm or

microfiche.

A search on the online catalog (MOSYS) will

indicate what form the periodical is in.

If the issue you want is not in paper, go to the help

desk, and the student will show you how to find it

and how to use our microfilm/microfiche

reader/printer.

What’s on the upper level of Reeves?

Mostly our circulating collection of books plus lots of

tables to work at.

Lining the walls are carrels, which provide

quiet places to study.

For your convenience there are MOSYS catalogs

(dumb terminals) and restrooms on all levels of

the library. There are also photocopiers on the main and lower levels

Part 2

What’s wrong here?

• This desperate student has waited until the last minute to start a paper. The sources he needs are out, and there’s no time to get others. The result? He can’t do his best work and get the grade he wants.

• This student is hunting high and low in the Reference Collection for a book that’s shelved in the stacks. Remember, if the call number doesn’t begin with REF, the book is not in Reference.

• This student has just gotten the idea that whatever information he needs can be found on the Internet. He doesn’t realize that information on the Net can be un-reliable and that it’s not the only source of information.

This student has missed the signs that say no food is permitted in the library, and drinks must be in covered containers. Help us keep your library as comfortable and clean as possible, a place you can take pride in, by observing the rules about food and drink.
