Socialization is the process by which members enter into and become a part of a group. Socialization is a continuous process. What
leaders do to orient or reorient their officers into the organization greatly affects the learning of roles, organizational goals, and
expectations. If leaders do not conduct deliberate socialization programs, they run the risk that their officers will learn their roles
from inappropriate models..

Sergeant Bradley did not expect her officers to knock themselves out at appearance grading for the glory of the squad. What she wanted was to instill allegiance to the other squad members. If she could just get her
officers dedicated to the notion that they owed it to the squad to work hard and look good, they all would benefit. To Sergeant Bradley the first and
foremost thing for new squad members to learn was a sense of belonging to the group.

You are a patrol sergeant assigned to the midnight tour. Half your squad is newly graduated recruit officers. Your leader had stressed the importance of reducing night time commercial burglaries. This was important to you since the shift had the highest burglary arrest rate in the patrol division last year
and the your squad had the highest rate on the shift. You wanted your squad to be the best once again. The new officers receive careful attention from
their Field Training Officers and the sergeants. Indeed, most of the shift chain of command effort seems to be on the new officers and they appear to
quickly adopt the shifts values. The veterans, however, are largely left on their own. You soon notice that your veteran officers are meeting for coffee
during the night. They get the job done, but seem to be falling behind on their burglary arrests. You start to worry about what their burglary stats are
going to look like.

1. The socialization goals for this unit are:a. Conformity
b. Survival of the Organization
2. The socialization agents for the new officers are: Field Training Officers, sergeants, chain of command. The transformation
processes these agents are using for the new officers seem to be collective, formal, and active role modeling. The socialization agents for the veteran officers are the Shift Commander and
Lieutenants and the other veteran officers. The transformation process they are using is inactive modeling.
3. In this case the socialization goals are being met for the new officers but ARE NOT being met for the veteran officers.

In this case the lack of an effective socialization program for the veteran officers has led to the development of a dysfunctional
norm of spending too much time meeting for coffee (AOI 2) and possible problems with organizational productivity causing concern
that the veteran officers will not achieve the standards of commercial burglary arrests (AOI 3).
