SVDP FIFTH SUNDAY COLLECTION Did you know the special fifth Sunday collection for St. Vincent de
Paul is for your Sacred Heart St. Vincent de Paul Society? The
money collected is used to help our parishioners and members of
our community who may need temporary monetary assistance with
utilities, rent, and other basic needs, as well as for various
activities such as feeding the poor through Connection Cafe,
playing Bingo with senior citizens at a local retirement home. We
will have this special collection next Sunday.
Thank you in advance for your generosity. For more information or
to become a member of Sacred Heart St. Vincent de Paul, please
contact Rita Dette at [email protected].
This is my third article on the topic of addictions. Addictions create havoc in the lives of the individuals with the addiction, their families, friends
and community. I spent 3 years working with people with addictions and have seen firsthand its destructive power. People with addictions need our
prayers and support, along with their families. I welcome any comments or questions on this issue. I have many resources at my disposal.
What Is Addiction?
Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex,
shopping) that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as
work, relationships, or health. Users may not be aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others.
The word addiction is used in several different ways. One definition describes physical addiction. This is a biological state in which the body adapts
to the presence of a drug so that drug no longer has the same effect, otherwise known as a tolerance. Another form of physical addiction is the
phenomenon of overreaction by the brain to drugs (or to cues associated with the drugs). An alcoholic walking into a bar, for instance, will feel an
extra pull to have a drink because of these cues.
However, most addictive behavior is not related to either physical tolerance or exposure to cues. People compulsively use drugs, gamble, or shop
nearly always in reaction to being emotionally stressed, whether or not they have a physical addiction. Since these psychologically based addictions
are not based on drug or brain effects, they can account for why people frequently switch addictive actions from one drug to a completely
different kind of drug, or even to a non-drug behavior. The focus of the addiction isn't what matters; it's the need to take action under certain
kinds of stress. Treating this kind of addiction requires an understanding of how it works psychologically.
When referring to any kind of addiction, it is important to recognize that its cause is not simply a search for pleasure and that addiction has
nothing to do with one's morality or strength of character. Experts debate whether addiction is a "disease" or a true mental illness, whether drug
dependence and addiction mean the same thing, and many other aspects of addiction.

HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains holy days of obligation
this way: On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are
to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship
owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s Day, the performance of the
works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family
needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the
obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate
excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and
health (CCC 2185).
All Saints Day is Tuesday, November 1. Masses will be at 8 am, 9:30 am
(all school liturgy), 6 pm and 8 pm (Spanish Mass).
LIVING FAITH BOOKLETS The October-November-December issue of Living Faith is available in the

scripture for the day. A $1 donation is appreciated.

November is the month in which we remember
all of those who have gone before us. We ask
you to consider participating in one or more of
the following ways through our liturgical
celebrations.
The Book of Remembrance will be set out on a
podium next to the baptistry for you to write in
the name(s) of anyone you know who has died. It
can be a family member, parishioner or friend. It does not have to be
someone who passed away this past year.
A Shrine of Remembrance will be done again this year. Parishioners
may bring a framed picture (no larger than 5 x 7) of the deceased to
the Parish Office, or set it on the shrine area by October 28.
On Sunday, November 6 at the 11:15 Eucharistic Liturgy, a
decorated candle representing each member of our parish community
who has died this past year, will be processed forward and placed in
front of the altar. Following the liturgy the families of the deceased
will be invited to take the candles home.
“KNIGHT’S CORNER” KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL #9632
NEWS
Next weekend is “Love in the Heart of Christ,” our annual parish-wide
volunteer project where parishioners assist other parishioners with
projects such as leaf raking, yard work, gutter cleaning, window
washing, small household repairs and painting, house/garage/basement
cleaning, etc. It’s a two day event, Saturday and Sunday, this year.
There is still time to sign-up to help, or be on the receiving end of
needing help. See the sign-up sheet elsewhere in the bulletin.
Our annual KC Memorial Mass will be Sunday, November 6. At the 8:00
Mass we will honor and remember our deceased brother knights of
Council 9632. Knights are encouraged to attend and well as family
members of our deceased knights. There will be a catered breakfast
in the parish center following the Mass and all are welcomed to attend.
Over the first couple of weekends in November we will again be taking
orders for Thanksgiving apple pies for delivery the weekend prior to
Thanksgiving. Look for the KC sign-up table in the vestibule and in
early November.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
MERCY SUMMIT (SEE BELOW) Are you one of the many people across our diocese who prepare funeral
lunches? Do you volunteer at a local food pantry or clothing closet, bring
communion to the sick or offer time helping at the local hospital or
hospice center?
Millions of acts of mercy, big and small, occur in the Diocese of Des
Moines. As we approach the conclusion of the yearlong Jubilee of Mercy,
Bishop Richard Pates invites all those who extend God's mercy to others
to a gathering called the Mercy Summit for a morning of reflection,
affirmation and encouragement. The Mercy Summit is an opportunity to
pause and prayerfully reflect on this calling and see it expand.
Hear a keynote speaker - Matt Halbach, Ph.D. in Council Bluffs and Cindy
Shaw, M.Min in the Des Moines metro area - and be a part of breakout
sessions that focus on mercy:
- To persons who are sick or imprisoned,
- To those who are hungry or without homes,
- On behalf of those who are most vulnerable, or
- To the refugee and immigrant.
Please register for the Mercy Summit by going to dmdiocese.org and
clicking on Jubilee of Mercy or call 515-237-5046.

Te has puesto a pensar cuando tiempo
has perdido en cosas pasajeras? Pedro, Santiago, y Juan vieron a
fe.
Amen.
