All people that on earth do dwell

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus said: before you offer your gift, go and be reconciled. As brothers and sisters in God’s family, we come together to ask our Father for forgiveness.

Let us confess our sins.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

Collect

Liturgy of the word

Almighty God who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

True and faithful God, you give courage to the fearful and endurance to martyrs. Sustain us as followers of your Son Jesus, that with boldness and conviction we may acknowledge him before the world. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Amen.

Romans 6: 1b–11 [p. 241] Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptised into Christ Jesus were baptised into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Gradual hymn

Gospel reading

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

For God’s holy word, thanks be to God.

Be still, for the presence of the Lord

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

Matthew 10: 24–39 [p. 241] ‘A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!

‘So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

‘Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.

‘Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.’

Prayers

Nicene Creed

This is the gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Revd Mary Copping

Intercessor: Revd Liz Stuart

Let us pray for the Church and for the world, and let us thank God for God’s goodness.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

Eucharistic Prayer

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Blessed are the peacemakers: they shall be called children of God. We meet in the name of Christ and share his peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Let all mortal flesh keep silence

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

We lift our hearts and souls to you, Lord God, for you made creation out of nothing and in Abraham you called a people to be your own. You crafted a destiny for your children from the barrenness of despair and the wilderness of sin. You made an everlasting covenant that bound you and humanity to be with one another for ever. In Jesus you made a new covenant that embodied humankind’s full presence before you and your full presence before humankind. And so we gladly thank you, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, singing the hymn of your unending glory.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Page 7: Welcome to the parish online Prayer · 2020. 6. 21. · true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for

Uniting God, you bind yourself to us in Christ’s death and you bind us to yourself in Christ’s resurrection. In him we are dead to sin and alive to you. Send now your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this meal in his memory, that we might be a ransomed, healed, restored and forgiven people delivered from the curse of slavery, and that this bread and wine may be for us the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Who, at supper with his disciples, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me’.

After supper he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Great is the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

Jealous God, you want us for yourself and you teach us to shape all our loves as ways of loving you. Give your consolation to all who live with no peace, but only a sword. Dwell with those who find their household divided, son against father, mother against daughter; and any who find it hard to love you and to cherish their family members too.

The Lord’s Prayer

Breaking of the Bread

Agnus Dei

Giving of Communion

Restore your Church, that it may discover you on the way of the cross and find its life by losing it for your sake, until the day when you are the joy of our desiring and we the joy of yours, when every eye shall behold you and every tongue confess you as Lord, one and holy God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.

Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.

Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us your peace.

Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

Blessing

Loving Father, we thank you for feeding us at the supper of your Son: sustain us with your Spirit, that we may serve you here on earth until our joy is complete in heaven, and we share in the eternal banquet with Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven!

God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you now and remain with you always. Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.

Compassion Learning to love means being able to see every member of humanity as a unique individual. It is here that we come to the great difference between compassion and pity. Pity is when we love someone who is suffering but when the love is still embedded in our own fear. When we see somebody dying for example, we cannot help but fear our own death. ‘Poor thing’, we say. (‘Thank God it’s not me’, we think.) But when our love meets the suffering of the other and breaks through our own egocentric fear, we no longer think of the other as a ‘poor thing’: we think of them as a person like ourselves. The meaning of compassion is that we recognise that we mourn with those who mourn, we die with those who die, we suffer with those who suffer. This is the compassion of Christ which has united all humanity in himself.

Ruth Valerio interview For World Environment Day on 5 June, the Bishop of Winchester spoke with influential environmentalist, theologian and author Dr Ruth Valerio about how, as we move out of lockdown, we might do so in a way that cares for God’s creation. They discuss with optimism what opportunities the pandemic has given us to reconsider how we care for the world around us, and our choices about returning to ‘normal’ in a more sustainable way. Be alert and thankful, green-style This week’s suggestion is to look closely, in your garden or when you are out walking, at something in great detail – perhaps a tree, flower, butterfly or beetle? You could follow up by finding out more about it or drawing a picture, either realistic or ‘fantastic’.

Do send suggestions to promote our caring for God’s creation, from all ages please, to [email protected].
