Welcome to the September Bulletin 2020 22 members attended the August meeting and AGM. This also coincided with the move to Level 2. The AGM went smoothly, President Jeanette inducted two new members and members enjoyed socialising, albeit at least a metre apart. Unfortunately our speaker, Gayle Thornton decided against joining us, as she had just returned from Auckland and Afternoon Tea was cancelled! What a funny old world we find ourselves in. Hopefully we can have Gayle to speak to us at another time. However, it was great to get together and enjoy Inner Wheel fellowship. Jeanette inducted, and welcomed new members, Pam Maclean and Annabel Russell. Jack, would have been most impressed. We have a lovely Club, and, it is at times like this, that the friendship, and warmth, shown by our members, plays a big part in the healing process. A big thank-you, to you all. Yours in friendship, Joan Mel Haarer has an online Facebook page called Stig’s Army that she set up in order to reduce isolation and vulnerability within the community. Meet our new members. Annabel was born in Wyndham and raised on a farm in the hills above Mimihau. She was educated at Mimihau School and Wyndham District High School where she was Head Prefect in her final year. She then began training as a florist with Olive Dunn at Floresta in Invercargill. She met and married Bruce who was farming at Avondale. They had three children, Brian is farming at Dipton, Vicki owns the Mossburn Hotel and Grant is a QA Inspector of Engineering in Invercargill. She is Grandma to 7 Grandchildren. While on the farm at Avondale Annabel and four friends bought the old Mossburn Hall, and with the help of husbands, turned it into Bracken Hall. Initially it was to sell crafts that the group had made, but before long Annabel’s talents at cooking came in to play

and Bracken Hall became a Café and Gift Shop. For their first retirement Annabel and Bruce bought Dunrobin Station. They renovated the old homestead and Annabel did B&B. Then they started hosting fishing parties from Australia. The 2 guides stayed right through the season and 6 fishermen came for a week at a time. Annabel provided breakfast, packed lunch and dinner, as well as taking her turn at working at Bracken Hall. She was also involved in the Mossburn Lions Club at this time serving as President for several years. For their next retirement they bought at Gibbston Valley, right above the Gibbston Winery. It was not long before Annabel was doing the gardens, working in the Gift Shop and using her florist talents doing all the floral arrangements at the Winery. As well as this she has continued to enhance the garden that Helen Lane began. A great place for a Garden Party. Annabel has always used her knowledge of floristry to grow dried flowers, do arrangements for weddings and social events. Annabel is looking forward to her time in Inner Wheel, getting to know members and helping with projects.

Pam was born in Invercargill in 1945. Her parents shifted to Queenstown when she was 18 months old. Her father had a plumbing business in town – his workshop was in the current mall. Pam attended the local school through to the end of 5th form then went to Otago Girls, then on to Dunedin Teachers College. After finishing college she taught at Waikiwi, Thornbury, and North schools. She met Stuart, through a flatmate who worked for NZI, and they were married in Queenstown in 1967. Two years later Stuart was transferred to Queenstown to open an office for NZ

Insurance They have lived here ever since and raised their three daughters here. The girls all attended the local high school and then went on to Dunedin to Uni. They all ended living overseas apart from Kate their eldest daughter, who shifted back to Queenstown from Sydney with her partner and daughter four years ago. Sarah, their middle daughter, and her husband live in Bronxville, New York. They have a 6 year old son, and 4 year old twin girls. Pam went to stay with them last November/December, a spur of the moment trip which she is so pleased she did in light of the current situation. They were not badly affected by covid, both still working from home, and the children are on track to go back to school in September. Their youngest daughter, Rachel lives in Melbourne. She is coping ok with covid but her job went and they are all in lockdown for 6 weeks which is tough. Pam and Stuart were over in Melbourne with Rach (to see the Formula 1 race) when they found out that NZ was going into lockdown. They came home a few days after lockdown so had to quarantine at home for 2 weeks. Pam worked part time at the Queenstown Preschool & Nursery in the early years, and then 30 years ago went on to manage the Centre through till 2017. Her interests are biking, walking, reading, and travel.

Welcome to the Club Annabel and Pam

Snippets from the Committee meeting.

ISO Jenny has received a letter from the ISO, Deenita Morton and members of the Inner Wheel Club of Bundaberg Sunset, District A77 Queensland, extending the hand of friendship to different Inner Wheel clubs around the world. The Inner Wheel Club of Bundaberg Sunset is situated in the township of Bundaberg, five hours north of Brisbane, with a population of 92,897. The main industry is farming, sugar cane being the most prominent. Most of us are aware of the two products Bundaberg is famous for – ‘Bundaberg Rum” and “Bundaberg Ginger Beer “. It is also a popular tourist spot as the Great Barrier Reef begins in the Bundaberg region. Deenita writes that the Club is small, a total of 12 members and was Chartered in 1997. Their time is spent raising money for a variety of Charities as well as social get togethers like going to the movies and going out for meals. Jenny will make contact with the Bundaberg Club and tell them all about the wonderful things our Club does.
